Despite being relatively new to the Burwood scene, Royal Treasure is noisy, cramped and eating there is nothing short of a tiring experience. Throughout our dinner we felt incredibly rushed by the impersonal and intrusive staff. My plates were taken away from right in front of me before I was even finished. Every interaction with the staff came across as transactional - the goal for them is to sell as much food as possible and if you're not interested in ordering another lobster or another beer, don't bother wasting their time - that's the attitude we gleaned from these rude people.
It may seem pointless then for me to go on to describe the little things that made my experience at Royal Treasure infuriating, having already shown how they are incapable of getting even the fundamentals of hospitality right, but if at the end of the day this helps to dissuade you from giving these people your business, then here goes: We were a group of 12 diners and yet they only supplied one claw cracker for the lobster. Stingy or inept? When they took the large plate away and transferred the remaining lobster pieces onto a smaller plate to make room on the lazy susan, they took away that single claw cracker - how were we meant to eat the rest? When we walked across the dining room to the bathroom, the staff make no effort to make way for you in the narrow passages between tables, and instead it is you who has to step aside for them to pass. Absolutely bizarre. On my way out of the restaurant (which should have been a happy affair, to leave this atrocious place), I was elbowed by a waiter, who did not apologise (I don't think he was even aware). The table next to us became increasingly rowdy as they downed more and more wine, almost to the point of being intolerable - yet no attempt was made to tell them to perhaps tone it down because the rest of the diners were becoming uncomfortable.
Please don't come to this place. If you do you'd just be condoning poor hospitality practice...
Read moreThere’s something about yum cha that really lends itself to catching up with friends. For a very reasonable $25/head, we had a five person brunch feast at 敦煌海鲜酒楼 Royal Treasure Seafood Restaurant in Burwood. The entire lobby of this second storey restaurant was filled with diners, however making a reservation for six people (or more) ahead of coming helped us slide right past them. It’s super popular around 11am but you might be better coming slightly earlier as there’s a midday cutoff when the kitchen turns its attention to lunch dishes.
With such a big floor space, the trolleys here take a bit longer to reach you. While the meal feels more leisurely as a result, you do pay a price in temperature and texture for the extra time across the floor. This meant slightly-too-sticky har gow (prawn dumplings) though the pork and prawn siu mai held up well. Stodgy and delicious radish cakes are a firm favourite, though here it was the cheung fun (pan-fried rice noodle rolls) that kept my chopsticks returning. Char siu bao (barbeque pork buns) were great, both as shiny golden baked numbers, and as fluffy, white, steamed buns.
Steamed pork ribs were tasty but not well separated, making them a bit awkward to share. Beef balls on the other hand, were cut by the server to assist. Probably my favourite item here were the pipis in XO sauce served piping hot from a trolley with its own burner. My dining companions seemed most enthused by fat orange rolls of mango pancake, that were cut to share upon request. They had too a high a cream-to-mango ratio for me to really see the appeal, but I was definitely in the minority here. We ate more dishes than I photographed, from prawn spring rolls to a big plate of greens, so the very reasonable bill came as a...
Read moreThis place does not care about their customers nor is it family friendly. Food is so so, only come here for the convenience. I have written a formal complaint not only due to my dissatisfaction of service I received but also due to a fire hazard that they haven’t fixed nor even acknowledged. It’s been a week and I still haven’t received any response from them. My 4 month old baby was charged a tea charge even though he does not use a high chair as he cannot even sit up. $2 is nothing but it’s the principle. This establishment is trying to maximize profit as much as they can out of everyone, even a breastfeeding baby. I then walked into the parents room to tend to my baby, upon trying to exit the parents bathroom, I was completely blocked off. This was the second time this have happened. The first time I was blocked off by a few large barrels. I turned a blind eye and thought it was once off. However this time, getting blocked again and not being able to exit with by baby in one arm, this made me furious. This is a major fire hazard as the parents bathroom is also right next to the kitchen! Anyway, to sum it up, food is average, not bad but you can get better in Sydney. Not family friendly, especially if you have little ones and waiters and waitresses serve you with an attitude. I’ve attached the pics of me getting blocked the second time I’ve visited. Didn’t get any response from management acknowledging this hazard so I’ll be going to safework and report to the regulators, as I wouldn’t want another mother or father encountering...
