Love this! It's always time for Korean food, but early Summer Sunday night back alley near the chaos of Sydney's High Street is surely the best place for it. "There's a queue!" I said - our fellow foodie Sandra piped up "It must be good then, must be worth the wait." And she was right. "Table for 3?" I asked the officious looking waiter guy. "There's 8 tables in front of you." He responded, ever so politely. We three looked at each other, and decided to wait. After about 20 minutes "Table 79 - please go upstairs to level 3." And that's how the fun began.
The first thing you notice in a Korean restaurant is the burner built into the middle of the table, with an open flue above it, to take away the smoke. There's a chap comes around to each table dispensing fire - literally. He is a "fire starter" - picture included as a vague but cool reference to late 90's insaniacs "The Prodigy". He carries what looks like a ladle, and spoons a small bucket filled with hot coals - ready for burning - into the pit. It's all a bit theatrical and wonderfully entertaining. He switches the gas to on - and there's a welcomed, pervasive heat. For a second you think of distant Korea and how very cold it gets there - living in Australia we have no idea! You imagine how the heat from this fire would keep you warm. And the warmth of the Kimchi as it burns in your belly. It all makes sense.
Korean food is strictly for carnivores. That isn't entirely true - there are plenty of vegetarian dishes. See under garlic chive pancake, soybean paste vegetable soup, acorn jelly salad. ☺️☺️☺️ But meat and flavored meat are clearly the focus, especially in a traditional barbecue house like Madang. As I mentioned before - the pipe sucks up the smoke, in case you burn the meat. Not that there's likely to be any smoke - the meat here is so delicious it just disappears. Within minutes of putting the protein on the heat our beady eyed faces gather in anticipation - eager for a morsel - keen to pick a juicy, tasty, tender bite well before any smoke or cinders appear.

Read moreThis is my second time coming to Sydney madang, today (23/72016 Saturday at 7:40 ) was a celebration dinner for my girlfriends birthday, it was suppose to be a joyful night out, but instead we had a disrespectful experience with no customer service at all. One waiter named Howard acted as if he was the owner of the restaurant, was rude and approaches with an aggressive manner. We were issued a ticket to wait in line for a table, after a 45 minute long wait in the ice cold weather he told us the table was not available! The way he delivered his customer service was offensive, disrespectful and in a mercenary way! Video clip of his attitude has been recorded. Showing how he yell at customers and not allowing the customer to speak! Talking back at the customer is not a good way to start your job. Although the food is not bad but allowing poorly trained staff using such attitude towards customer is a disgusting and disturbing experience! If the restaurant is losing profit, He will be one of the reason why the restaurant is losing business. Don't employ staff that don't admit their bad attitude, thinking that they did nothing wrong. Yelling at customer is the worst action. Was planning to stay longer, but nope tooooo scare they will do something to our food. Last nights service really disappointed me and my ladies.
it have a bad customer service, staff is poorly trained, staff have bad manners and attitude towards customer and side dish is poorly portion. seriously don't know why this place is rated so high, with lack of customer service and untrained staff. this is not the only restaurant that have good tasting food, others are not bad too, and provide...
Read moreYou’ll find this Korean BBQ down a little alleyway off Pitt Street in Sydney’s CBD. Despite its inconspicuous location, the place is filled with customers on both levels of the venue and the restaurant is of a large size so that is certainly testament to its popularity.
We’re there for a Hungry Diner event (his 13th blogger and influencer event) with a bunch of like minded foodies ready to eat up a storm, and that we certainly did.
We sit around the Korean BBQ’s complete with a few sides and try some starters including the crispy seafood pancake, pork and kimchi pancake and our favourite- the raw beef salad topped with an egg yolk. Refreshing and super tasty. This is something I'd definitely order again.
The BBQ then heats up and we cook our meats. The tender wagyu, sliced pork belly, to beef rib and saucy bulgogi, we cooked it to our preference. The meat is nicely seasoned and of a high quality. I think we possibly ate our body weight in protein.
Although it is a Korean BBQ, they’re also known for their mains, we try Bibimbap, grilled eel, Deep fried chicken in spicy sauce, Seafood and rice cakes topped with cheese for that perfect cheese pull, as well as some boiled pork belly with shredded radish and oyster. The menu is extensive so there's plenty to keep your bellies satisfied.
Staff here are super friendly, welcoming and work hard to please and change our grill tops regularly. They definately provide good service.
A great restaurant which has a fun, casual vibe and a venue where you can enjoy some quality Korean BBQ and perfect for a catch up...
