This is a hidden takeaway shop with a few tables, located right at Chatswood interchange. It's next to the golden arches, but serves much better food. We came to try it out for lunch and had steamed vegetable dumplings, Xiao long bao (steamed pork meat dumplings), pan fried pork buns, and the deep fried taro sandwiches. The pan fried pork buns were great, there was plenty of meat, not a lot of soup, but most importantly it had a crispy bottom. The Xiao long bao had the same sort of meat inside, so didn't have that much soup inside. That was fine by me. There was more meat inside one of these compared to most other places in Chatswood (eg new shanghai, or even din tai fung). The vegetable dumpling was as expected, probably a bit more horse radish flavour than expected, but all good. I have no idea why we ordered the deep fried taro sandwich, but it was an interesting sweet treat to eat at the end of the meal. This shop was reasonably priced, service was very quick and efficient, and the staff even smiled. I suppose if they get busy it will be hard to get a seat at one of the few tables they have. Worthwhile.
Edit: I've been back to try the Fried rice with XO chicken. That was okay for me, but probably a bit much added chilli's for my family's taste. The Shepherds purse dumplings were okay too. The pan fried pork buns had more soup today, and the meat not so tough. But they were deep fried. Service was good with a smile. Very efficient just like...
Read moreI finally tried this after living in Chats for 5 years, was always suspicious of any of the eateries based in a busy place. It was because my osteo said his dumpling connoisseur friend tried it for lunch and it was so good he came back from the city to Chatswood again the same day for dinner. So a story like that I had to do it, although I am not really sure what to say about this place. This place surprisingly has purslane dumplings, although the wrap is in tatters when it comes out - maybe frozen for too long or over boiled. The service is quite obnoxious and my tolerance is reasonably high for apathetic unsmiling shop assistants. I havent tried other items, the place has a dingy vibe and I kind of felt very sluggish both times that didnt make me want to explore more. My dumpling crazed-friend didnt like it here either, the pork had a funny colour and walked out with this "still hungry but lethargic" feeling highly indicative of loads of MSG or other...
Read moreWhen we got there one of the chefs had just finished hand-making a batch of dumplings, which looked really enticing. The menu is pretty simple but simple is fine if the food is good. How much food can you eat in one sitting anyway?
We opted for the prawn dumplings(蝦餃) as a pre-dinner snack, but they did not live up to expectations. In fact, they fell far short. Although the "skin" was thin and not too thick (a common shortcoming in dumplings), the prawn themselves were cold in the middle. Ice cold. As in it was literally icy in the middle. I understand that they can't all be made to order, but if you're going to reheat frozen food... it's not a huge ask to make sure you're not serving dumplings that are crunchy with ice.
It might just have been an "off-day," but it's not like I'm going to leave a review based on a hypothetical...
