1st visit. Sumptuous food served in a basic take out style joint, paper/cardboard receptacles like a food van might use. The strong point here is the amazing food; a Japanese/mexican fusion which - for the salmon taco at least - rivals a hatted or starred restaurant. That said, the food greatly outclasses the venue which has almost no seating or ambience, and passable staff. Neither of us could comprehend the counter hand who mumbled inaudibly and had zero engagement, enthusiasm and energy. So, to presentation - its great food, but no plates available for dine in, just a cardboard folder to hold it, like a G-y-G or similar.... The dish I enjoyed was the salmon taco and the black taco is tempura fired making a crisp texture contrast with the salmon. truly delicious. A work of art. But my guest ate nachos which was okay. But they missed out.
So, to sum up, its fast, functional and food focussed, but could be so much more which would make it a nice venue to sit and enjoy (which it isn't, let face it, its fast convenience in and out - and yet I yearned for more). They have 2-3 beers, but to non-alcoholic or mid strength beers. Also, the problem with the layout is you have to stand back 2-3 paces from the counter to read the only menu, so you cant read and speak your order at the same time, which adds a real level of difficulty, if you need to step back each time to answer the 4 steps in making a single meal selection (what you want, what sauce, what drink, do you want to make it a meal?). So if that can be corrected, please do.
For my wished-for dine in ambiance, maybe they have a sister restaurant I dont know about.
Very happy I went all in all, the food lived up to the reputation as a "must try" on King St, which has a lot of stiff competition for convenience foods of a...
Read moreLove the food. Definitely worth to try, its an interesting combination of Japanese cuisine and Mexican. I tried the salmon taco and its definitely something I never had before. Presentation was very pleasant too
A bit of suggestion: Perhaps in each table, the store could give a "table tent" to remind customers not to turn the taco 90 degrees (because unfortunately I was brain dead when eating it and spill the food, causing a mess for my jacket) 🥲🤣 sorry for the staff 😭🙏
But this idea is inspired from a Japanese restaurant Ive been where they provide recommendation on how to enjoy their main menu. So it can be a cute idea to do this for the taco / taco bowl. Provide visual guidelines to create custom taco bowl will help customers as well.
Service was good, staffs were very friendly.
The place is a bit small but well organised. A good place for a quick brunch but I felt a bit pressured when a large group came and some needed a place to sit (half sat on the table beside, and half was standing near my table). So it wasn't the store's fault but yeah
Will be back to try...
Read moreWhilst the concept is intriguing (keeping in mind I’m not a big Mexican fan), I can’t say I’d return. I understand that prices have gone up especially as a small business but what I paid really wasn’t ok, specially for what I got. $17.50 for a bowl is pricey as it is, and the equivalent price at fish bowl or calipress keeps you full and is of much better quality. I received a tiny bowl and my order wasn’t even correct with black bean and edamame salsa (I don’t like black beans) and some other salsa (not a big fan of tomatoes with my rice) added onto my bowl despite me not ordering it. Nonetheless, even with those unwelcomed additions to what I ordered, I was still hungry, and I’m a relatively petite woman who can often last on a fishbowl for around 5-7 hours. The salmon was ok, but nothing special, and service wise it seems to be quite the fast food vibe. For those prices, go elsewhere unless you want a spoonful of rice with a bit of salmon and multiple other ingredients that you did...
