When Washoku opened it was just the tiniest little restaurant and they offered discounts to local patrons to get them to come try their new menu .... that did not last very long.
The food was so excellent that word travelled quickly. Firstly because it was a well thought out menu, secondly because you could watch chef Kimâs artisan hands as he went about preparing your food. It was so intimate that you never really felt more than a glance away from seeing where your food was at. This was also bolstered by Annaâs attentive service and can-do approach.
It didnât feel like much time went by before they knocked a hole in the wall and rented the neighbouring space. Of course it started as a juice bar with uncomfortable chairs but shortly thereafter the crowds swelled and it was the place that locals just wanted to be at. Thankfully the chairs have been replaced with comfortable ones.
Great food. Affordable prices. Consistency. Not only was it creative that menu, but they delivered it the same every day. Every day. Iâve never been there on a bad day - touch wood.
So now as they expand to Rose Bay I can recall hearing two other local patrons exclaim âfinally we get our Washoku back!â Because the locals are miffed that lately every man and his dog has been booking a table.
There was a Japanese restaurant across the road - it was complacent. Itâs miso was watery and boring, itâs sushi was uneventful. They were sitting ducks when Washoku came to town.
The great things to order:
Miso - best in sydney in my opinion Salmon taco Naso miso hot poke bowl A slice of katsu on its own Karrage chicken Miso eggplant Agedashu tofu Jess bowl Foxy bowl Vegimate sushi roll Blue fin when in season Aburi salmon
But basically thereâs not a bad thing on the menu.
Just please, if you live closer to rose bay - eat at the rose bay one and leave the Vaucluse one to...

You can see the craft that goes into each roll, and the attention to detail. These are not the rolls you get premade for lunch in the CBD. The fish is picked up from the fish market each morning and if youâre lucky youâll see them slicing up a fat chunk of salmon or tuna in between rolls.
As for the taste, amazing! My only complaint was that I ate my roll too quickly. Partner got the salmon teriyaki bowl, and it was sauced just enough to augment the flavor of the salmon, as opposed to drowning it in sauce.
Nice people. Not a lot of restos open on the weekend so this place fills up too. Called ahead to make a reservation...
