The Village Door — Restaurant in Victoria

If you have dietary requirements then stay away from this place. I've always enjoyed the breakfast at Village Door so figured lunch would be just as good. Turns out the lunch menu is not as vego friendly, however the specials board had arancini and zuchinni slice on it which was promising. Asked about the arancini and was told it had a meat bolognese sauce, so inquired about the zuchinni slice and was told that yes, it was vegetarian. I double checked this, saying sometimes they have bacon in it but the wait staff confirmed - definitely vegetarian.

Meals come out together and low and behold, the zuchini slice has bacon in it. Told the wait staff straight off the bat, and was told by the waitress those bits were just onion. Asked the waitress to check with the kitchen staff, she came back apologising because it was bacon, which I could pretty clearly see by looking at the slice.

Not off to a great start, but the waitress asks if I would like the arancini as it was vegetarian. I questioned this as the man at the counter had told me it was a meat dish. Waitress goes and checks out the back and tells me its vegetarian so I order this.

A few minutes later, the waitress comes out and apologises as the arancini does have a meat sauce. Finally get given a falafel souvlaki but had to sit there hungry while my partner ate his food, and once he had finished, he awkwardly waited when 20 mins later I got mine.

Seems like its not a big ask to know which dishes have meat or not, and its a problem very easily fixed by having a (v) or similar next to some dishes on the menu. Would hate to have any dietary requirement more complex like a...

ORDERED: 🦑 Lignje na zaru (grilled calamari): Grilled marinated calamari served with garden salad and chips ($25.00) +10% weekend surcharge

REVIEW: I'm not messing with you when I say this is the best grilled calamari I have ever had.  🧡 They're not too chewy, and the marinade caught fire over the grill, leaving some charcoaled bits behind. Perfect texture. It's absolutely delicious because of how flavourful it is as well. Along with some great salted crunchy chips, and a refreshing salad, I somehow demolished this dish. The dish was far better than I expected. Would recommend it!! 😂

Service at Village Door left more to be desired. Although our reserved table was ready half an hour early, which allowed us to be seated early (I loved this), they didn't seem too keen on the table service. I wasn't sure if they took our order at the table either, and after a while of waiting I decided to take the initiative to approach the counter. Then the tap water needed to be prompted twice... which doesn't allude to the best service.  🏜️

The atmosphere was quite busy. Tables were filled on a weekend during lunch time and I'm glad I made a booking! There's little cute decorations around, like the 'Dobar Tek' lettering which could be Croatian for "Enjoy your meal! Bon...

Had lunch today with my wife at the Village Door for their bottomless food and drinks event. We can only say thankyou so much to all the staff for such a great time. We'd been dropped off a bit early but there was no problem with us coming in early to sit and wait until 3pm when it kicked off. Our food was brought our really quickly and as usual was cooked to perfection. The drinks flowed freely never having to wait to be topped up like you do at some of the all you can eat and drink affairs. It was a good group of people in there not to rowdy. If you are in Geelong and want a great feed at a great price don't go past the Village Door if you can get in. You won't be disappointed.

Had breakfast here this morning with the Grandkids. My wife and I have nothing but praise for all the staff. Our waiter was there as soon as we needed him every time, we never had to wait for anything. I'm a finicky eater and like my food cooked in a certain way, the chef nailed it first time no send backs here.
