Another weekend rolled around and I found myself in Scarborough. I love it here. After a swim, I was suddenly peckish and decided to pay a visit to the Sandbar. Older readers (and this writer!) will remember the venue as Zander’s. Back then it was painted a less than appealing salmon colour. Very 70’s but not in a fun, nostalgic way! It’s now painted white and has that rough rendered look, which gives the building so much more charm. The Sandbar’s entrance is nicely arranged with plants, which instantly makes the space calming and welcoming. As I wandered in, ‘Bad Moon Risin’ by CCR was playing - great song. During my visit, the music was quite varied, which made for a good atmosphere. I got really excited when Steppenwolf’s ‘Born to be Wild’ came on. As a lover of classic rock – and the movie ‘Easy Rider’ – I was in my element. On arrival, you’re greeted by a friendly staff member who will seat you. From there, you can order at the table via a QR code. But there is also table service. This is great to see in this modern age of what I call ‘digital do it yourself.’ There’s selective use of exposed brick throughout the venue. This works really well, as it makes for a rustic feel in a modern setting. Add to that the colourful chairs, wooden boxes (delightfully kitschy) and the surfboards mounted on the walls and you end up with an eclectic, yet chilled, beachy vibe. I really like the wall mounted photos of old Scarborough scattered throughout. They create a retro feel without going over the top. There’s ample seating, so getting a spot shouldn’t be an issue. And there’s no need to book either, so it’s super flexible. I sat outside, as the view of the ocean and boardwalk was too good to pass up. Walkers, runners, cyclists and dog walkers amble by at their leisure. The menu is straightforward and that’s a good thing, especially as some places over complicate their menus with fancy items that fall short. The Sandbar doesn’t suffer from this. There’s a good selection of meals to choose from. You’ve got classics like the bacon and egg burger and ‘eggs 3 ways’ (poached scrambled or fried). There are a few sweet options too, like the Belgian waffles and banana and coconut chia pudding. This makes for a good balance. I opted for the smashed avo, which came with ciabatta bread, crumbled feta, cherry tomatoes, basil, white balsamic and hazelnut dukkah. I added two poached eggs to cap off this dish. My meal was spectacular. The eggs were cooked to perfection and the avocado was smooth and fresh, while the cherry tomatoes were bursting with flavour. The dukkah provided a nice contrast and the feta was rich and creamy. Even the salt was amazing – that might sound strange, but in my mind, these little things make a big difference. I also had a cappuccino, which went down nicely. With that, I’ll move onto the drinks. Between coffee, smoothies , cold pressed juices, iced tea and milkshakes, you’re spoilt for choice. Oh, and did I mention there’s also soft drinks, kombucha, mocktails and soft drinks?! They even have a ‘Hair of the Dog’ section, which I think is very cool. You can tell that someone has put effort into designing this menu. The staff are really friendly and helpful. You can recognise them by their turquoise shirts. The venue is kid friendly too. They have coloured pencils and paper, which is great. I asked one of the staff if these were popular and they said the kids really get into it. This is fantastic, especially in this age of never-ending screen time. Kudos to the owners for this initiative. You can also have lunch and dinner at the Sandbar, with plenty of beer, wine and spirits on offer to complement your meal. And it’s open from 7 am til late every day - a big positive for Perth. There are wall mounted heaters outside for those cold winter nights that Perth puts on. So, they’ve got you’re covered all year round. So, if you ever find yourself craving a nice breakfast, head out on the highway (see what I did there 😉) and into the Sandbar. It’s a great venue with an even greater vibe.

We often have a lunch or late lunch on Fridays just to get out n about and enjoy our blessed WA. We chose the Sandbar after checking previous reviews and the menu. We were able to find parking nearby even though there was plenty of people around. We were given a table inside near Alfresco Doors giving us a great view as well as shade. The staff were great, professional friendly yet not too invasive We both had a soda, lime and bitters which came out quickly. I ordered the steak sandwich and my wife ordered the beef burger. My wife commented the beef Pattie was juicy well cooked and tasty, giving the beef burger a 4/5. I gave the steak sandwich 3/5. I really want to help those who cook a steak! I am a butcher from way back and do most of the cooking at home so feel I am well experienced to advise how to have a great steak. There are 4 steps 1 ensure the meat is at room temperature before placing the meat in the pan. If it goes from fridge to pan the meat will be rubbery and dry. 2. Salt the meat. Not a lot just a touch to add flavour. If you don’t add salt the steak will lack flavour! 3. Ensure the pan or grill is very hot, sizzling hot. If it’s not hot enough the steak will be rubbery and tough. 4 upon achieving the right temperature (rare, medium etc) remove the steak and let it rest knowing the meat will continue to cook while resting, when you remove the meat allow for further cooking while resting so it’s best to remove the meat prior to achieving your desired temperature and let it rest into the medium or rare state. If you do not follow any of these steps you will serve up the steak like I received today, tasteless rubbery and chewy. I can honestly say the steak I are today is common throughout the restaurants in Perth. Even though the cut of meat is good, scotch or porterhouse, the whole steak can be poor due to not doing the simple 4 steps.

Not a great experience! My girlfriends and I went out to the place for dinner last night. The location was excellent but the food was average! We also didn’t like the service as we were rushed. We arrived at 7.30 pm and before we could even sit down a waitress told us that the food service would be closing in 15 mins and we had to make an order. The food arrived probably 20 mins later and my steak was burnt. As we were eating, a waitress came to our table to tell us that the bar was closing and it was her final call for drinks. This was at about 8.00 p.m. so we ordered our last drinks. We couldn’t eat in peace as the waitresses and waiters kept hovering around our table clearing and asking if we had finished eating and drinking. At 9.00 pm whilst our drinks were still full, a waitress came to our table and told us that they were closing in 10 mins. We asked why it said 10.00 pm on the google page and they said that it wasn’t as busy so they wanted to close and we should leave. The waitress kept hovering and told us twice that she was closing the restaurant and we ought to leave. Mind you, she didn’t keep reminding the table next to us that they ought to leave and we left before them. I definitely wouldn’t recommend this place and my girlfriends and I will not be going back ever again! There are better places and better treatment elsewhere in Scarborough!

Jan 2023: Brunch. The atmosphere was very chilled and relaxed. Casual dining with the family for brunch. Food was fantastic. We ordered a couple of plates of waffles, a big breakfast and some banana bread. Coffee was great also. Most of all though, I could not say how great the staff were. Customer service at its best. Very attentive, empty water bottle replaced right away, plates cleared and checked in to make sure how everything was going. Thank you for looking after us. Will be back again! Edit: 30 April 2023. Lunch. What a complete turnaround from when we came in 3 months ago. The food was still good but the service was terrible. Sat at our table for over 20 minutes before we could even get a waitpersons attention. Just kept walking past despite us calling out. Too busy mucking around behind the bar with each other. Was a 5 star, now has dropped a few stars due to poor, bad, inattentive customer service. Plates were not cleared and they’re not massive tables for the four of us. May come back, may not. It’s interesting as ultimately the whole experience was not as good as the last time.

My sister and I celebrated our 40th birthday in Sandbar’s function room on the weekend and it was awesome! We couldn’t have picked a better venue - Lauren, Rhys and Ross were all great to deal with from the start, booking was easy and they were really accomodating with our budget. We selected our own drinks list, could play our own music and decorated the room on the day to suit our festival theme. We had about 80 guests and thought that was perfect - there was a good amount of space for standing room as well as tables/bar tables with chairs, and even a dance floor later. There was also a great little alfresco area with bar tables and seating attached to the function room for anyone wanting to hang out in the fresh air. Food and drinks were really good and they did a great cocktail special that was a hit. Our bartender for the night was Jacob and he was superstar! Thank you Jacob! The vibe was amazing all night and we all had the best time. Every staff member we came across were so friendly and helpful too. Thanks so much to you all at Sandbar, we will see you again for our 50th!

Went here with the family Sons had the pizza 🍕- Telling Porkies - 4/10. Described as quite flavourless. Son also had the olives which were supposed to be spiced. For $8 the portion was tiny. I had the chicken burger and was disappointed. If there is sriracha in the Mayo it’s hard to taste. The chicken burger itself is plain and lacks any particular taste. I came expecting a zinger tower beater! But left feeling I had tasted a less than average chicken burger. Fish Tacos. Fish was nice but again wife describes a lack of taste/flavour in the dish/combination. Chicken Wings were good Daughter had the spaghetti which she said tasted great and was very happy with this dish The cocktails were expensive at $22 a pop. Overall aside from my daughter the mains were vastly disappointing.
