Bäckerei Sorger — Restaurant in Graz

The Sorger is an institution in Graz (est. 1688) and located in the center of the Old Town, in the Sporgasse. And by the way this place is one of the very first non-smoking coffee shops in Graz which changed to non-smoking many decades ago and kept it that way since then.

The Sorger in the Sporgasse – the cobblestone road in Graz – has two floors, and I prefer the upper one, since here it is more comfy and it features a high ceiling. The famous Käsestangerl – you can also have it as Schinken-Käse-Stangerl - is a super delicious Danish pastry covered with cheese or with cheese and ham. It is fluffy in taste and the cheese (together with pieces of ham) is really something you don’t want to miss. Its recipe should already have made it on the UNESCO list and most of the Grazer know this delicacy.

The interior has been renovated in the last months or so, resulting in a more light and bright atmosphere, but in my opinion it lost a little of its old charm of the monarchy therefore. But anyway because of the renovation it became more colorful, modern, and trendy, and luckily some of the style elements from the old days they preserved, such as these special orange-golden chandeliers you can see on the photos, which was the style before the renovation.

The staff is friendly and the opening hours are very nice, since this place is open until 22:30/23:00 (except on Sunday and Monday, where it already closes at 19:00).

Ich war heute mit meiner Partnerin bei der Bäckerei Sorger in Graz frühstücken bzw. brunchen. Wir haben das Ladenlokal betreten und der erste Eindruck war durchweg positiv. Wir wollten erst an der Theke bestellen, wo viele gut aussehende Leckereien ausgelegt waren. Als wir fragten, ob wir diese auch hier essen könnten, wurden wir von den wirklich freundlichen Bedienungen zu Tisch gebeten. Dort angekommen, kam eine wirklich nette junge Servicekraft und fragte ob sie schon etwas für uns bringen dürfte. Für ein Lokal, dass sich in Google Maps eher in die Kategorie "Bäckerei" einsortiert, war das schon ungewöhnlich exzellenter Service. Auch die Gerichte auf der Karte waren eher einem guten Restaurant zuzuordnen. Die positiven Überraschungen nahmen hier im weiteren Verlauf kein Ende. Meine Begeisterung für das Lokal stieg immer mehr. Ich bestellte das Club-Sandwich. Meine Partnerin ein Schinken-Käse-Toast mit Pommes. Auch hier war alles in bester Ordnung. Das Sandwich war ausgezeichnet. Im Großen und Ganzen eine super runde Sache.

ABER.....

Meine Partnerin bestellte sich eine EisSchokolade für 4,90€. Ihr wurde darauf hin ein Kakao in einem recht ansehnlichem Glas gebracht. Leider schwammen im dem Kakao noch "Pulverbrocken" .... Die Temperatur des Kakaos lag knapp bei 2°C unter Raumtemperatur. Ich war da ein wenig genervt, da ich nicht erwartet hätte, dass mir nach den ganzen positiven Eindrücken doch wirklich ein Kakao oder eher gesagt, eine EisSchokolade bestehend aus H-Milch und 1,5 Löffeln Kakaopulver aus dem Supermarkt gebracht werden... für satte 4,90€ .... Das hat den ganzen Aufenthalt dann doch sehr getrübt. Daher für mich hier nur 3 Sterne.

Ich würde mir wünschen, dass der Betreiber sich für die Zukunft gerade bei diesen super anmutig klingenden Getränkenamen auch etwas entsprechendes Einfallen lässt. Der Kakao war echt eine Nullnummer!

Dennoch war es nur ein kleiner Makel im Vergleich zum gesamten Aufenthalt! Ich kann das Lokal jedem empfehlen und freue mich, bei meinem nächsten Aufenthalt in Graz, hier wieder Frühstücken zu gehen. Vielleicht dann sogar mit einer vernümpftigen Eisschokolade!

Clean place, good choice of food. However, when trying to choose a cake to eat in (after queuing for ages) was told to sit down and order with the waitress. I explained, how can I order when I don't know what the cakes are? I'm not from Austria. So I then ordered to take out and she didn't want to serve me as she thought I would take it and eat in, I had to persuade her, that I was taking them home! Really bad service, everyone was looking at me! Embarrassing! There was only one waitress in and she wouldn't have time to run through all the different cakes! Not good service at all. :( shame as we always call in to this cafe. Don't think I'll be...
