the man who i can only presume is the owner asked my friends rudely why they were speaking english (i don’t speak german) as they were having a conversation with me at the counter, which meant i was already taken back by the service. i ordered a bahn mi with pork, and when asked if i wanted pâté i declined as i was wanting a lighter lunch. i was then essentially scoffed at and told it was better with pâté and that if i was in vietnam i wouldn’t be asked if i wanted pâté. again, i would usually order with pâté but decided against for today. i wouldn’t care if i got this service and then had a good bahn mi. but to be so pretentious and then deliver the most average bahn mi i’ve maybe ever had is laughable. the bread was too dense, the pork had no flavour, the sandwich was small (especially for the price) there were nowhere near enough vegetables, and the sauce was gluggy and clumped up all towards the back of the roll. i’ve had probably between 50-80 bahn mi’s (one of my go to foods in melbourne) and this is without a doubt towards the bottom of the list. not what i expected after i was lectured about how to eat my bahn mi. i probably wouldn’t have left a review without the service, just had the bahn mi, not enjoyed it and got on with my day. but if the service is like it was, i can only hope the food backs it up,...
Read moreThe location is actually quite close to the metro. just a bit hard to spot in the corner. the food is 100 out of 100. the owner is cool and the staff is nice. Everyone seems to enjoy their work and is proud of it. Acc to my knowledge, 3 green flags to share: 1. Only 1 pager menu(better focus and special supply. And It's true. They do offer baguette "kebap"with Vietnamese beef and salad which is really rare for other Vietnamese restaurants In Europe) 2. Owners' poster on the wall--he does link his reputation to his career 3. Happy staff. A small and happy community which makes the food more blessing. To be detailed, My order, classic pho with beef--obviously different natural taste➕the beef slice is heat by soup IN THE BOWL!!!!!!! Both requires way more effort, ingredients quality and freshness!!!!!! Way more than an "easier" version( "msg water"➕thick beef is boiled in the pot, unfortunately it's actually the normal of abroad Vietnamese restaurants)which makes you super thirsty. My friend's order: rice with lemongrass chicken. Gummi and shining rice(top compliments acc to asian criterion)Fresh and Interesting seasoning and tender chicken. In one word--super!!! Unfortunately too tasty to take a pic...
Read moreIf you’re scrolling through the reviews to find out, “Hey, does this place have quick, tasty Vietnamese street food?” The answer is “Yes.” No need to read any further.
If you’re wondering why, despite the excellent food, I’ve left a 3-star review, then read a little further:
I’ve come to this place 4, 5 times and every interaction with the owner has either been mildly strange to downright cringe-worthy. From being unnecessarily warned about the VERY spicy food (it’s not spicy at all 😂), to him strutting up to our table to mansplain to our friend about how to drink the tea (who asked?), he has managed to raise my eyebrows with his very stereotypical Viennese customer “service”, that is an old-school mix of machisimo and rudeness, with a sprinkle of “grantig sein”. The very best (so far, anyway) was when he asked where I was from, which I answered politely, that he without missing a beat followed up with, “No, but where are you ORIGINALLY from?” Absolute cinema.
Despite all of this, the cost-performance is good enough for me to want coming back, so the food is tasty. If you’re okay putting up with a little bit of old-school Viennese rudeness, it’s a nice place for some...
