The blonde male server from Texas, USA was unprofessional. I am a young girl visiting and was excited to experience Mels. They told me they took cards for payment. They informed us their systems had crashed after I asked for the bill. ~15 minutes later there were no updates and the servers were avoiding us. My party and I had a deadline and needed to pay promptly. I asked for an update and the Texan server snapped at me and replied that they are only taking cash and that I needed to walk a few blocks in the rain to take cash out. I said I was HAPPY to PAY, but given the delay in updates, the walk, and the fee I would be charged (after being told they took card) I would like a discount. I then told him that we needed an update soon bc we needed to leave. The Texan waiter then stomped off and yelled across the restaurant for other customers to hear that “he’ll call the cops if we leave”. I expressed that I did not appreciate him threatening me- he tried to gaslight me into thinking that it “was not a threat” but a “prompt”. He refused to apologize and disrupted the peace of other customers by yelling/demanding that I pay now (as the systems spontaneously began working) without an apology. Both me and my local friends were appalled by how we were addressed and disappointed by the character of this server. If you value customer service, respect, and feeling valued I do not recommend coming here as they take out the failures of their own systems on their customers and do not hold themselves accountable for...
Read moreThis place had almost everything going for it and yet wound up being something of a disappointment. When looking for craft beer in Vienna, Mel's Diner inevitably comes up and while their listed selection is good; we received a list of the beers from the menu that were not available which included almost every beer we'd been interested in trying.
One or two beers being unavailable is understandable, but six or seven is unacceptable. They either need to do a better job of keeping their menu up-to-date, or reduce the number of taps they claim to have if things are routinely unavailable.
The location itself is great and I found the bar welcoming, clean and nice to sit in. The food options were surprisingly diverse and relatively inexpensive. While I didn't think the food was amazing, it certainly improved my feelings after the issues with finding...
Read moreNice relaxed atmosphere for a burger and beer joint in the first district. Their burgers are of fantastic quality, great taste and reasonably priced (pictured is their Jameson BBQ burger, which falls apart if you ever put it down but also you won’t want to put it down before you devoured all of it).
Obviously the beer selection at Mel’s is a prime reason to visit. Literally hundreds of beers to choose from, local and international variety, with lots on tap as well. Service can be a bit slow during rush hour, but always friendly and accommodating of special wishes and recommendations.
If you are a group of more than four, I’d suggest coming in a bit earlier at dinner time, as no reservations are being taken. Or just make use of their fantastic lunch offer: any food item and side with any small beer or cider on tap for €10 - hard to beat in...
