Not great. Most expensive meal on our trip, and, very sad to say, the worst.
I feel bad for giving a low review because of the difficulties the family has encountered in the last year. Meldy's husband has diabetes and they had to raise over $80K for his care.
The photos looked completely the same, but I had a completely different experice than the other reviewers. Either Meldy had a bad cooking day, or the other reviewers were just trying to support them.
On our trip, we actively looked for the smallest hole-in-the-walls possible because we know that's where you get the most authentic Belizian experience. We found lots of yummy places on Caye Caulker's backstreets that we'd die to go back to, but not Meldy's. I got the chicken curry that Meldy herself recommended to me. Unfortunately, it was bland, but quite salty. My partners dish was also mediocre at best. If my mom made this food at home, I wouldn't complain, but the quality was low in comparison to other chefs in town, and prices more than double other small establishments ($35/meal).
Go to support Meldy's family, but sorry to say, for tasty Belizian food,...
Read moreThis was not only my favorite meal, but one of my favorite experiences out of my entire trip to Caye Caulker! My partner and I stumbled upon this place for dinner and ended up coming back the next day for lunch because we were blown away by Meldy’s cooking, kindness, and hospitality. I’ve never had a dining experience quite like this; eating on the front porch of Meldy’s home and getting to chat with her and the other diners made our meal so much more special. And WOW the food. Meldy told us that she makes every dish to order, and you can truly tell. My partner had the shrimp curry and said it was the best he’s ever had, and I had the stewed chicken which tasted like a warm hug in a bowl. We also tried the whole lobster and snapper filet for dinner, and the snapper was melt-in-your-mouth amazing. This place is an...
Read moreBefore we head to Caye Caulker, we had to try Meldy’s. We were excited to taste their crispy chicken, even though they opened at 11:00 instead of 11:30 and it took a little longer for our meal to arrive. But it was definitely worth the wait! Since it was raining, we just relaxed and waited for our food. The big, crispy fried chicken with coleslaw and rice was absolutely delicious! A heads-up though: there are a lot of sand bugs around, so be sure to apply insect repellent, even though I did, I still got bitten! Yikes! At least we tried haha. The atmosphere was nice, but not quite what...
