**UPDATE: Tried a few things for my first trip there. I'll break it down below, I take Sri Lankan food seriously and I don't like going back if they fail you on the staples.
Fish Bun/Maalu Paan: best in the city I've had, I try it everywhere I go all over the GTA and this was absolutely how one should taste. Abundance of black pepper heat and a good mix of fish and potatoes. ** the consistency on this is shaky, one weekend its amazing, another weekend it's just whatever
Beef Devil: Great flavour, decent amount of spice for most, excited to try the other deviled items. Really promising.
Kothu Roti: Mutton Kothu extra spicy is the most authentic way to get this obviously. Opt out of things like carrot and cabbage, it's not authentic and I don't know why places do this, but it's become a trend in Sri Lanka as well. Anyways, opt out of the extras and get a Mutton Kothu extra spicy, they've done it how kothu should be. Most places make it too soggy, or you can still smell the chilli rawness. Portion is smaller than usual, but it's def the best tasting I've had in a while. Hope this continues and isn't a one hit wonder.
Lamprais: we got chicken, and to be honest. It's really just a Tamil vaalai ilai sappaadu (banana leaf meal), so if you're looking for an authentic Burgher style Lamprais this isn't it. It was good, nothing to really rave about, the nethali (sprats) were particularly good.
I'd definitely go back and keep trying the other options they have to offer, definitely the best spot in...
Read moreThis review is based on a catering experience I had with Maya Restaurant. My mother and I ordered various dishes for a birthday party and we were quite pleased with the quality and quantity of food we received. We ordered the small tray of various dishes which can easily feed 20 ppl. Pumpkin, Spinach, dhaal, Curry mutton and Curry chicken. I also ordered 20 mutton rolls. All the food was prepared and cooked by the owner. We were able to place a deposit and then pay the rest on the day of pickup. The customer service is amazing, very friendly and family oriented. Their mutton roles are priced higher than other places but that's because they are made larger and they're filled with much more mutton than potato like some other places. It was well worth it and they taste amazing.
Everyone enjoyed the food and it was a great spread of vegetarian and meat dishes. One thing I would alert customers on is that Sri Lankan food is very spicy and for our family we can tolerate spice, however this was next level spice. So I advise if you do order catering let them know you would like it less spicy especially if you have kids or just those that cannot tolerate spice.
Other than that everything else was amazing the owner called my mother later that day to ask if everything was okay with the food. So just the follow-up was a great sign of the type of customer service you will receive. We will order...
Read moreI was a very loyal customer at Maya's. And all my family went there as it's was so good. This was untile about mind of 2023. The food was really good. My favorite was the egg roll that has the full end half and half on both ends of the roll and many more.
But in the resent past one of my family members has gone and bought some string hoppers and in box it has a black fungus growth. So he informed them when he when the next day and sad to say the staff in long the chef has laughed and they were saying things in Tamil language. They may have thought that we don't understand but we do understand everything.
Also I went again recently and bought the egg roll that I love always and it has only quarter end on both ends and the mutton roll had lot of potetos instead of 1 PC's of mutton. This was not the food we used to have. We never asked what the price was as long as they give good quality food.
Do agree there is a price increase but I know for sure who come their wanna make sure the food is good.
So unless Mayas pull things is together soon they will loose litbof customs in the long run. As of now they have lost 11 family's who used to buy food from Maya's.
So it's...
