I've eaten lunch here once before with work colleagues and the food was good. However, I placed a simple, large order (10 cucumber rolls & 5 avocado rolls) this past weekend and they completely botched it up. In fact, I have never come across such gross incompetence in placing a food order anywhere before, even in foreign countries where English comprehension was limited. I called on Sat night for a Sunday noon pickup. The girl that initially took my call seemed clued-out, so asked me to wait and another girl took my order. However, the girl that came on seemed even worse. Her incompetence was appalling. I had to repeat myself several times as she couldn't seem to grasp what I was asking for. My English annunciation is clear - English is my first language, being born & raised in Canada and am a post-secondary lecturer and former teacher. I also used to work in the restaurant industry years ago, so am familiar with how they operate. The girl who took my order seemed like she wanted to get me off the phone and hang up - no asking if I'd like anything else, or if she'd like my name and phone number, until I asked her. Then it was like an "oh yeah" moment for her. I specified to her no sesame seeds on anything, asked her to repeat the order back to me, and asked how much. She told me it was $21 when it should have been over $50. So I asked her again and she seemed confused, then appeared to be recalculating due to the pause, and told me the same amount. So I left it at that - if she wanted to charge less, I wasn't going to complain. Upon pickup the next day, I was 10 minutes late. They presented me with a very small order. Not trusting them based on the phone call, I checked it, and sure enough, it was completely wrong. One cucumber roll and 5 tamago rolls!! They apologized and asked if I could wait 10 minutes. I could not. The order was for my daughter's birthday party and we were already cutting it close to our arrival time. Not wanting to deal with more incompetence, I told them to cancel the order and provide proper training to their staff. I have never been so furious with a restaurant's incompetence as I have with Hyack and I will not be endorsing their service in the future. Ki Sushi across the street has demonstrated much better service and higher quality food (i.e., they only serve wild salmon, unlike Hyack which serves both wild and the farmed garbage).

I am rating Hyack a 2 based on the one decent experience I had eating in before. Otherwise it would be a 1 based on my phone order and pickup experience.

So in a nutshell, don't waste your time here. Walk across the street to Ki Sushi or anywhere else. And certainly don't place a...

Hyaaa… so late la!

One of those late nights and options were limited so decided to try out this place for some take out while on the way home.

This place is located right beside Douglas college on 8th Street in New West. There are paid street parkings available (I see roof top parking?)

Here were the food I ordered to go;

Soft shell crab. Lack of flavour and a bit too crunchy for a soft shell crab to my liking. Tako wasabi. Pretty good, not slimy. Salmon and tuna sashimi. Decent size and fresh but could use a bit of a presentation even though it’s a take out (all sushi places should STOP putting lemon slices near sashimis, they literally cook the outside of whatever fish it touches). Salmon, hamachi, chopped scallops, tamago, albacore toro nigiris. Fresh but the toros missing that buttery taste. Spider roll and futomaki. The futomaki was pretty good. The spider roll was a bit off, maybe because the softshell crab was a bit off. Deep fried poached egg. Surprisingly pretty good, I actually enjoyed it. I could snack on a couple of these. Asari garlic butter. It was pretty bland even though I do smell the garlics. And what’s with so much broth? It’s like a guppy fish swimming in the ocean. Beef teriyaki with rice. The rice could be softer and the beef could be less dry and slightly thicker so it wouldn’t be like eating beef jerky with rice.

When I went to pick up the order, the restaurant was pretty quiet with one table of customers. A weird little sense of silence especially late at night in New West.

The service from the server who packaged my order was okay, although could be more welcoming . Maybe cause it has been a long day and it was late.

As for the food, I was hoping it to be decently okay because I was counting on it to be my late night take out place but they fell short of that… hyaaaa! Too...

As someone who loves sushi, I can confidently say that Hyack Sushi is one of the best sushi places in New Westminster. After reading through all the five-star reviews on Google, I knew I had to check this place out for myself. And boy, was I not disappointed!

From the moment I walked in, the cozy and inviting atmosphere made me feel right at home. The staff greeted me with a warm welcome, and I could tell they were passionate about their food and making their customers happy.

Now, let's talk about the sushi. Each piece was a work of art, and I could taste the freshness of the ingredients in every bite. From classic rolls like California and Spicy Tuna to more adventurous options like their Dragon and Rainbow Rolls, Hyack Sushi has something for everyone.

One of my favorite things about this place is their attention to detail. The presentation of each dish was beautiful, and they even took the time to write a personalized message on the plate for me. It's the little things that make all the difference, and Hyack Sushi definitely knows how to make their customers feel special.

In addition to their delicious sushi, Hyack Sushi also offers other Japanese dishes like udon, tempura, and teriyaki. And for those who aren't sushi fans, they even have a selection of Korean dishes like bibimbap and bulgogi.

I also appreciated the cleanliness of the restaurant and the COVID-19 safety measures they had in place. It made me feel comfortable and safe while dining in.

Overall, my experience at Hyack Sushi was unforgettable, and I can't wait to go back again soon. If you're a sushi lover like me, you need to check out this place! Trust me, you won't be...

The restaurant was mostly empty when I arrived. I was greeted and seated promptly, and was served hot tea. I advised I would be waiting for my friend before ordering, but after my friend arrived, we had to physically get up and flag someone down every time we wanted something. There was only one other customer in the restaurant, the rest of the place was empty. We order, the food arrives in a reasonable amount of time. I ordered the sushi and sashimi combo and salmon oshi, my friend ordered a avocado roll, a kappa roll, and a few salmon nigiri. She liked her avocado and kappa rolls. I enjoyed my sashimi. Unfortunately all of the nigiri came with an absurd amount of wasabi already on it (between the rice and the fish). You couldn't even taste the fish anymore. I should've taken a picture of the wasabi it came with - I basically discarded the rice and tried to salvage what I could. Hindsight 20/20. The salmon oshi was not bad, just not what I expected. It was not the typical salmon oshi with the slice of jalapeno on top. It was instead topped with roe and stuffed with cream cheese, which I wasn't expecting and wasn't a super huge fan of. (The menu did state that there was cream cheese in it, but I didn't read it carefully enough before I ordered - that part is on me) All in all, I did not have a particularly enjoyable experience. Aside from the copious amounts of wasabi, everything else was okay-ish. If I were hungry and in the area, and there were no other food options, I might come back here. It certainly wouldn't be my first, second, or even third choice.

Went her last night to finally try the place and I say "been here and will never come back again." Just a background, I love going to sushi restaurants run by Koreans. So this review is based from my Korean sushi knowledge. In short, there are other better Korean sushi places than this one. 1. Awesone roll that costs $13. This is not awesome given the size is too tiny and very cheap when it comes to ingredients. When I think of roll... The generous, big portion and full of ingredients such as crispy potatoes like Nanaimo Sushi and Sushi Town. And it comes to high price of $13(extra $5) for tiny California roll, sauce and garlic skin. 2. Do not expect Alaska Roll is the same as the other Korean Sushi place. This was disappointing since Alaska is my favorite. 3. The only sushi restaurant that does not allow substitution on the combo. This was disappointing especially all sushi restaurants I've been to allow it and just pay the difference. 4. Salmon and Tuna Oishi are not special at all. Did not taste anything. Worst actually 5. High price and small portion. Economy is tough right now and people bang for their bucks. You can charge more money if the food is mesmerizing but food is disappointing compare to other Korean sushi restaurants that have line ups. So goodluck to owners.
