I was strolling around downtown Burlington and began to notice that I was getting hungry.
I Passed by the subway, poked my head into the burrito place, and didn’t quite feel like a sit down meal at my usual favourite; burro.
Becoming steadily more wary from the hunger, I came upon the Corned Beef Hut.
The place that so many times I had passed by. The place with the massive zoomed in and pixelated photo of a corned beef sandwich that had never really piqued my appetite.
But on this fateful Saturday, I had noticed a smaller sign in the window advertising a Vietnamese “Bahn Mi” sandwich. Curious of the concept and always excited at the prospect of a different take on the tired and usual array of sandwich offerings I decided to enter.
Upon entry I was hit with a blast of flavourful aromas that immediately confirmed that I was about to stumble upon an excellent food discovery.
I was greeted by a friendly man (owner of the shop) behind the desk. I let him know that I had never had a Bahn Mi and asked for his recommendation. He said “the number 4 with chicken” which was the satay option. I then asked him what “Bahn mi” stood for. He replied “Excellent Sandwich”.
He retreated behind the till to the kitchen and began to whip up the order which he then put through the toaster. A few minutes later he came back a torpedo shaped sandwich wrapped in a red and white wax paper and we settled up at the register.
As soon as I arrived home i opened the wrapping and took a look at what I was about to eat. The first thing that was immediately apparent was how fresh, flaky, and buttery this baguette style of bread was. This sandwich was built upon a solid bread foundation, which is an imperative requisite in the creation of an excellent sandwich.
The satay sauce on the chicken was very nice. The chicken in the sandwich was accompanied by a layer of lightly pickled shredded carrot and garnished with cilantro.
Before I knew it the sandwich was gone. My life possibly never the same. I had discovered the Bahn Mi sandwich and am now visit more frequently than I care to admit.

Sandwich - A hot fluffy fresh baguette packed with lemon grass marinated TOFU (never knew the awesomeness this combination offered) with shredded pickled carrots and cucumber and asked her to maintain medium level spice to make it exciting.
Value for money - This 8" sandwich is a complete meal as it has Protein (lemon grass marinated Tofu), Fibre + vitamins (Cucumber and carrot) and Carbs (Baguette) and all this goodness in just $5.99 on Brant Street in Burlington where everything else is relatively more expensive.
My experience - I am new to Burlington and was venturing into all the Brant Street goodness on the weekend and decided to try the vegan Banh Mi sandwich, we tried asking what the filling is going to feel like and the wonderful lady there reassured that its going to be awesome. She took sometime preparing it while we waited for 5 minutes outside the store and gave 2 long sandwiches which were wonderful warm when I held it and most importantly she was much warmer than the sandwiches. We walked to the waterfront on the pier and unwrapped these warm sandwiches and the first bite gave such a good feel. The magic of lemon grass marinated Tofu was truly felt with the tingly chilli sauce and the wholesome carrots and cucumbers. It was a wonderful water view for my eyes and a healthy sandwich for my body! Was a great evening.
Recommendation - Why have all the ice creams full of sugar every time you visit Burlington pier / downtown / Brant street area. Try this place and tell me what you...
Read moreFinally found an incredible spot for Banh Mi sandwiches in Burlington. Usually I drive to mississauga to get good Vietnamese sandwiches.
The Sate banh mi sandwiches are absolutely perfect whether it’s the chicken or the beef. The seasoning is delicious The spice level can be controlled to your preference and medium was the perfect level of heat for me. The cucumber and carrots had the perfect pickling with a hint of sour and sweetness. All together they have the perfect harmony of salt, sour, sweet and spice.
I’ve also loved the pork belly banh mi which was just as incredible if you like the rich fatty flavour like bacon.
The bread was also great. Most non-Vietnamese spots tend to just use a baguette style bread which tends to be harder. These must be baked in house or from a Vietnamese bakery because they have a thin crispy crust and soft inside so it does not cut your gums.
I’m going to have to try the entire menu based off...
