So many positives but the lack of seasoning is too much too look past.
I ordered the Hot Chicken sandwich and the Chicken Parmesan. Both led to disappointment and had me wonder if anything had been tasted before being sent out.
I asked for my Hot Chicken sandwich half way sauced, and extra sauce on the side. I wanted to taste more than just the hot sauce. The chicken was nicely battered. It had lots of colour and wonderful crunch! The coleslaw was good. Nothing special but it’s only coleslaw.
The huge issue with the sandwich was the lack of seasoning. Individually the only the coleslaw had any salt. When eating the sandwich it tastes only of cayenne which is more about heat than taste. The chicken by itself tasted very bland. I even tried a spoonful of hot sauce (after stirring it) it was very bland.
The chicken parm is a nice size. The chicken again had a great cook to it. However the seasoning was terrible. It lacked salt and pepper and the lemon was completely overpowering. The lemon even drowned the taste of the tomato sauce.
I ordered at 11am, it wasn’t during a big rush as far as I know. Even if it was during the height of lunch rush I would hope consistency would be a priority.
Both sandwiches were gross, sadly. However looking at the reviews, this seems to be very rare.
I hope this feedback helps and is received positively. I look forward to trying them again, however living south of Calgary it...
Read moreI had the pleasure of visiting Alumni Sandwiches, and it was such a great experience overall. The highlight of my meal was undoubtedly the chorizo sandwich—it was packed with flavor and absolutely delicious! I would highly recommend it to anyone stopping by. To complement the sandwich, I opted for their root beer, which turned out to be an awesome pairing. The sweetness and crispness of the root beer balanced the rich, savory flavors of the sandwich perfectly.
While the main items were amazing, I did find the mac salad a bit disappointing. The flavor was somewhat bland and could have benefitted from a touch more salt to enhance it. Additionally, the portion size for the mac salad was quite small, which might leave some diners wanting more.
Despite that minor downside, the overall atmosphere of the restaurant made up for it. The space felt very homey and inviting, which added to the enjoyment of the meal. The standout for me was the customer service. My server was incredibly upbeat, friendly, and attentive, which really elevated the entire experience.
If you’re looking for a place with excellent sandwiches, great drinks, and warm, welcoming service, Alumni Sandwiches is definitely worth a visit. Just be prepared for the mac salad to be a bit underwhelming, but everything else more than...
Read moreNothing beats a great sandwich any time of the day! We were excited to finally try Alumni and had a hard time deciding which sandwich to try first. The hot chicken sandwich was crispy on the outside and the meat was nice and juicy. I wish I had gotten 3/4 or full spice, but I was splitting with hubby who isn't a hot head like I am. Bun was soft and the coleslaw and pickles didn't overpower the chicken. The beet salad was great with nice portions of beets, greens, sweet potatoes and goat cheese. I would've preferred a little less dressing, but I think that it was still very tasty. Definitely would get both again! Hubby's roasted turkey and brie was great! The ciabatta bun was the star of the show! Just a the perfect balance of crustiness and chewiness sandwiching juicy flavourful turkey and nice melty brie. I would've smothered it with more cranberry aioli, but then that's just me again. The parm fries were delicious! Crispy and well seasoned with a nice blanket of shaved parm and herbs on top. Overall, Alumni is a great stop amongst all the 17th Ave restaurants. Service was genuinely friendly and we are looking forward to our next visit! (We've already decided on our next sandwiches: Rosemary beef dip and the Tuna salad)....
