My family and I stayed at the Sheraton Suites with the intention of eating at the Flower and Wolf for our meals. What a mistake. We had breakfast one morning and it was ludicrous. First of all the place was not busy at all. We had come after what typically would have been and most likely be the morning breakfast rush for most restaurants. Everything started out well; seated promptly, server took our order, and even was accommodating to try and get the kitchen to cook something a little different from their menu for my wife. Basically was to remove the mushrooms and potatoes and add some vegetables on the side. Then things started going wrong. Took forever for the server to bring drinks for my two kids (10 and 3). The 10 got orange juice and we had asked for milk for the 3 year old. He never did get that milk no matter how many time I asked for it. Luckily we always have a back up juice box in the diaper bag. Which now means we have to go back up to our room to get a replacement before we start the day. When we got our food we were not impressed considering the costs. Rather than wait any longer to try and get things remedied we decided to eat what we got. The breakfast sandwich was ok, I could have made a better one myself (super runny egg and kale was extremely limp), the kids french toast was soggy, the buttermilk pancakes were dry (like the kind you make from a box), and the Breakfast plate (my wife's meal) was the worst. The sausage tasted like it was frozen and old (I had to spit out the bite I took, and so did the 3 year old), they did try to accommodate my wife's request by adding a small amount of their roasted cauliflower to the plate (which several pieces were burnt), still had the mushrooms which where very rubbery. However their potatoes where quite good. They did comp my wife's meal and we were not charged for the two coffees or orange juice. We were also told that the manager would give us a call but never received that call.
Now to dinner. We debated about ordering from them for dinner. Thought that maybe they just had an off morning due to the time we arrived or the staffing in the kitchen, but again how hard is it to make breakfast. We eventually decided to order from somewhere else and give their dessert a try before we committed to eating there the next day. We ordered the Cheesecake and Banofee Pie. Wow what a let down. I didn't expect much for plating but was hoping for some good flavor. The cheesecake was nothing but wiped cream-cheese (almost no sugar for sweetening and no flavoring at all) had a couple small strawberries chopped and some sort of graham cookie crumbled on top. Must be a no bake recipe, and tasted like eating the wiped cream cheese you can pick up at the supermarket. The Banofee Pie was what I was really excited about and wanted it to be good. I love dulche de leche and the thought of that with caramelized bananas still makes my mouth water. Another super big let down. Very thin pie crust, thin layer of dulche de leche, no caramelized bananas but something like a banana pudding on top of the dulceh de leche, and the whip cream was again no flavor or sweetness. It was like it wasn't even there. I am not an expert or chef but it wouldn't take much to do better than what we got.
Overall extremely disappointed and would never recommend eating here unless you are ok with mediocre food at a much higher price.
Update: Aug 29 2019 I sent an email as requested. Have not received a pone call or email in response. It appears as if they make comments to make it look like they care and try to make improvements. Very disappointing.
Update: Aug 30 2019 Received a phone call from the food and beverage manager regarding the survey we filled out. He seemed sincere and was apologetic for our experience. I bumped this review up 1 star since they did call to see if there was something they could do to make it right. The hotel did refund our breakfast...
Read moreNeeded TWO entrees to satisfy one tummy.
My associate and I took a dear client of ours for lunch today at the F&W. It was the first time for all three of us. Unfortunately it may be our last.
The Establishment is clean, modern and our server Morgan was very sweet, which are the reasons why I'm giving two stars instead of one.
When my cod entree arrived, my client remarked how small it was and that I would most likely be hungry after eating it - despite that it is one of the most expensive items on the menu - and yes, she was right. A tiny, lonely cod sitting in a light sauce surrounded with herbs and sprigs, WITHOUT any hearty vegetables, quinoa, rice, slice of bread etc... that would have given this meal some substance and would leave the average human being satisfied. Before finishing it I informed our server that I would need to order another entree as the one I was eating was nowhere near sufficient. I ordered the pancetta pizzette which was decent and I probably should have ordered that instead. Our server mentioned that the cod I was eating was what from some remote, resource-depleted place near Newfoundland. Remote, depleted or not, a restaurant should be able to give you a side of bread or potatoes that costs them only pennies.
My associate had the chicken. It was a sad anorexic-looking creature with vegetables that did not pair well.
Thankfully our client ordered the salmon and she said it was good but would most likely not visit again.
The only thing our sweet server failed to do was extend a simple apology or some concession to my complaint that I was not satisfied and had to order more food. Instead I walked out, paying a steep bill that did not warrant the food we ate. Hence, the reason for this review.
P.s. perhaps it's living and travelling abroad that has exposed me to a wealth of different types of food at reasonable rates but I am bewildered at why my beloved Calgarians continue to shell out big bucks for mediocre, and often...
Read moreMy husband and I stopped into Flower and Wolf last Sunday and had the most outstanding meal ever. This is a MUST. It’s also in a fabulous location!! The patio is huge and the service is incredible. Now onto the food! First, cocktails. I enjoyed the cucumber gimlet and the El Diablo cocktails which were both outstanding. My husband ordered the ORANGE SPICED OLD FASHIONED with Basil Hayden which was insane!! They really perfected it. We started with the beef tartare and scotch egg. Do yourself a favour and definitely order the scotch egg. It’s incredibly difficult to make but the chef does an amazing job. Next, the main courses we chose the ribeye steak, bison short rib, charred broccoli and pickled onion rings. EVERYTHING was absolutely perfect!! The pickled onion rings are divine!!! Lastly, dessert.... we don’t normally order dessert but we couldn’t resist the PB & J and the salted caramel pudding. BOTH were heaven I am honestly still thinking about them. I swear I’d go back just for the desserts!! Haha A few other points to mention, the service and waitress was incredible. It makes a HUGE difference. They really knew their menu and were so knowledgeable and able to answer all of our questions fully. HAPPY HOUR!!!! Yes they have a happy hour!! Monday to Friday 3-6pm with $5 and $6 cocktails?! I’ve attached a photo of the happy hour menu as well, it’s SUCH a steal of a deal. Definitely hit this place up it’s a...
