A few friends and I were at Joey Eau Claire on Sunday after attending a charity walk at the park nearby. Usually we’re big fans of Joey but I have to say this time we had a bad experience due to the manager at this location.
My friends and I walked in around 3:30pm and got a table for 6 in the lounge. After we sat down and ordered, a few more groups from the same event also walked in and got their own tables in the lounge area. We knew the individuals so said hi to them and they ended up sitting at tables near us since the lounge is self seated.
After this, the manager came over and told us that there would be a 20% auto gratuity added to the bill since these folks sat beside us. We thought this was weird because they were at different tables and furthermore we had already ordered our food.
One of the individuals we knew at the other tables is in the restaurant industry and used to work for Joeys so he decided to ask for clarification as he indicated to us that this isn’t normal as we all sat down at separate times, were at separate tables, and order separately. The manager, Stefan, spoke to him but did not really give a good reason as for why the gratuity was added.
The issue for us wasn’t really about the 20%. Most of us normally tip 18-20% anyway nowadays. The real issue was the fact that he told us after we ordered. I don’t know much about the restaurant industry but I’m pretty sure it’s commonplace for this to be told to the customer before they order so that they can choose if they want to accept that or not before dining. I’d also like to mention that the restaurant was pretty empty when we got there, so I would think that 3 new tables coming in during a slow period would be good for business.
I also want to note that after we left, the head manager, Jordan, called the individual who had spoke up for us as they used to work together and cursed him out on the phone. Again, I don’t know much about the restaurant industry but I know a lot about client and customer service and I don’t think a manager should ever call someone to berate them and yell at them on the phone.

Honestly, if Jayden ran for Prime Minister, I’d vote for her. If she started a religion, I’d join. If Joey’s doesn’t give her a raise, they’re making the biggest mistake in Canadian restaurant history.
