I recently visited the Chinese Cultural centre in Calgary with my family to celebrate the Chinese New Year and watch the Dragon dancing. The festivities and performers were excellent.
The event planning and communication from staff and organizers was terrible. The start times were wrong and the locations were not posted, we entered the building expecting the performance to be inside and only after the entire ballroom area was full of people were we told that we had to exit the building and walk around the outside to the street. Exiting the ballroom took almost 20 minutes as the exit path was blocked with vendor tables and the other exits were all emergency fire exits with alarms.
Once on the street the area was cordoned off using only caution tape which was quickly rendered useless once the crowd grew, volunteers spend a good 20 minutes wrangling the crowd. Proper crowd barricades would have saved a lot of angry crowd encounters.
Whoever was providing the sound system was horrible, The MC microphone was loud and clear however the Microphone given to Alberta Premiere Danielle Smith never worked, I don't know if the channel was muted or the mic had dead batteries but nothing was done and the crowd could not hear a word she said.
My guess is the sound company supports the NDP.
Every other speakers microphone worked just fine.
We were forced to listen to more than 40 minutes of talking heads while standing in the cold, any competent event planner would limit the speaking time for each speaker instead of pissing off the crowd and getting boos and complaints.
As I mentioned before, The Lion and Dragon dancers were great, very entertaining and the kids loved them, which is the only reason I gave any stars at all.
The Chinese Cultural centre and the event planner and their hack sound company owe the people of Calgary and Premiere Danielle Smith a sincere and very public apology for bad planning and...

The Stampede's free Chinese-style breakfast, served from 10 am to noon, is advertised with limited servings, but the exact number is not specified. Upon arrival at 10 am, I was met with an incredibly long line. I was informed that joining the line didn't guarantee breakfast, as only 500 dishes were available. After waiting for 45 minutes, I had barely moved and decided to quit. The concept of offering something new is commendable, but the event's organization is subpar. It's unacceptable to make people wait for hours without ensuring they'll receive food. A more efficient approach would be to distribute limited tickets to those in line ahead of time, guaranteeing that they'll receive their share. Due to the poor organization, I do not recommend attending this event!
