I’m being a little nit-picky over some things here but if I’m paying $300 for a meal, then I would hope for 5 star service.
My fiancé and I came for dinner here on a Tuesday night. We made a reservation because we were timid if there was room for us, but for this time of year and the day we went you probably don’t need one. We were greeted nicely but the drink menu didn’t come until a little later, which was unfortunate because we already knew what drinks we wanted but an order for them wasn’t taken for them for a while longer. As well, the waiter apologized that the bartender seemed to be backed up. To start we had the London Fog cocktail and shared 9oz. of red wine with the entrees.
For appetizers we ordered escargot and the seared scallops to share. My only criticisms were that I wish the escargot came with more toast because the leftover garlic butter from escargot is to die for; as well our escargot was a little sandy, and this being our first dish and my first bite was full of sand, it didn’t leave a good taste in my mouth (no pun intended).
For entrees I had the steak and lobster and my fiancé had the vegetarian meatloaf. When the waiter was explaining the menu, he pointed out that Hy’s was famous for its steaks but didn’t give too much other suggestions. He also pointed out that some entrees may come with a little bit of green beans but “not enough for a full serving,” which wasn’t the most flattering way to put it, but I understand it’s just the wording.
My steak was perfectly cooked, expertly seasoned and the lobster was tender, although in the menu it says it’s served with lemon butter but it’s actually served with lemon wedges and butter. Good for me, as I don’t like to use lemon on my seafood, but for anyone else who cares. Our mashed potatoes could’ve used a bit more seasoning but nothing a little salt and my melted butter from my lobster couldn’t help.
My fiancé’s meatloaf however was less than spectacular. Unlike other entrees, this one must come with mashed potatoes. Not a big deal but again, they were slightly bland. It also came with a side of beets. The meatloaf itself had a sort of grainy, mealy texture and tasted more like a stack of soggy cardboard than anything to me. Of course I didn’t expect it to taste spot on like a regular meatloaf, but we had read other reviews of other people enjoying it and were greatly disappointed with what we received.
Portion size was just right for me, but I’m tiny so if you’re even an average sized person you may still end up leaving hungry unless you order appetizers or a big steak for an entree.
I left room for dessert because I read that no Hy’s experience is complete without something served table-side. The gentleman who prepared our bananas foster was nice but not overly talkative. Perhaps my fiancé and I weren’t exactly starting conversation either but we shouldn’t have to awkwardly stare as we watched him prepare our desserts.
Overall I do want to come back, but only for a special occasion because the prices are so high. The food is great but not for an “all the time”...
Read moreI had the pleasure of dining at Hy’s Steakhouse recently, and it was an experience that deserves more than five stars!
From start to finish, everything about the evening was exceptional.
First and foremost, I must highlight our server, Dino. He truly went above and beyond to make our visit extraordinary. His warm demeanor, impeccable attention to detail, and genuine passion for providing top-tier service made us feel valued and cared for throughout the meal. Whether it was offering expert recommendations or ensuring every request was met with a smile, Dino set a new standard for exceptional hospitality.
The food was nothing short of spectacular. Each dish was a masterpiece, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. You can tell that the kitchen takes pride in every plate they send out.
The atmosphere was equally impressive. The dining and Lounge area were elegant yet inviting, with just the right balance of sophistication and comfort. What truly set the tone for the evening, however, was the incredible new lounge singer. His voice spoke to your soul and his performance added a vibrant energy to the entire space. The live music elevated the ambiance, creating an unforgettable vibe that perfectly complemented the exceptional food and service.

Read moreI went to the Hy’s Steakhouse in downtown Calgary over the weekend with the expectation of having a memorable dinner. Dinner was indeed memorable but no thanks to the food. Such an incredible restaurant with so much to offer in a way of comfort, elegance, and tradition, has turned into a woke cuisine. The portions were very small, but it’s not the smallness, which is the problem or the high prices, but the bland, undefined taste which permeates their menu. I ordered sautee prawns in tarragon, pernod, and garlic sauce. There were 4 prawns, which were nice, however the sauce was insipid without much flavor. I thought… oh well, am sure the filet mignon and lobster will be really good, after all, Hy’s specialty is steaks. The filet mignon was about 2 inches wide by 2 inches high, by definition it was very small - the meat was very juicy and tender, but the taste wasn't all there. The lobster had a light lemon butter sauce on top, which was so light, no amount of salt could change the taste of a boiled lobster. The mashed potato was good, but needed some butter. For dessert, the creme brule had a thin caramel crust on top of a creamy paste below. Hy’s woke cuisine has cut oils, butter, sugar, spices and all rich ingredients in their quest for “health and weight consciousness”. Though the service is good, and their wines - thank God are still reliable - you can at least have a nice glass of wine. All in all, it wasn’t...
