Disappointing and a rip-off in one aspect. The special rolls were pretty good, but everything else was extremely subpar:
The bento box was served in a SOFT PLASTIC disposable container. Taste was just okay. The tofu in the miso soup was tiny (literally fingernail size) and used firm tofu, making it unpleasant to eat. The side salad was literally just lettuce with thousand island dressing. You could make this at home in seconds. The salmon tataki's sauce was mostly just salty. There was some sourness, but no sweetness and no refreshing flavour of citrus that's supposed to come from the ponzu.
This is Japanese-style cuisine rather than actual Japanese food, and the flavours reflect that; most of the dishes tasted of just soy sauce, without the proper balance of sweetness and other notes. I came here because of the high rating, but I'm getting the feeling that everyone either only had rolls (which were a solid 4/5 for the two that we got), or never tried the several other significantly better restaurants in Calgary at the same price point.
Lastly--and the main reasoning for the low overall rating despite the higher breakdown ratings--is the way the tea was handled. Green tea was ~$1.79, which is fine on its own, and our party of two were served one pot and one cup. We asked for an extra cup (which took two asks to get), and the server retrieved it for us with a simple "sure".
Then we were hit with a double charge for this tea on the bill. When I asked about it, that same server said that they charged by cup. At that time I just said "oh okay..." and left normally, but the more I thought about it, the more ridiculous this felt:
Imagine buying a drink and then asking for an extra cup. It's not a takeout cup so you don't get to keep it. It's literally just an EMPTY CUP. And we were /charged/ for this EMPTY CUP. If you're going to double charge, should've we have received two pots of tea? All we got was one pot of tea and one /EMPTY CUP/. And if you're going to charge for this EMPTY CUP, then you should've told us when we asked for one. Yes it's a relatively small amount of money, but it's still daylight robbery.
The service was otherwise mild and friendly, which is why I gave it 3 stars (docked one point for this and one more point for having to get up and ask for a menu when the restaurant was completely empty), but this particular point I can't forgive. It's like asking for an extra fork or plate at any other restaurant and then seeing it on your bill. Combined with the overall subpar taste and plastic boxes for a $17 dish, I cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone unless they happen to be in the area and are...
Read moreI have been a regular at this sushi place in Calgary for almost three years, visiting nearly every week without fail. Over this time, I’ve come to deeply appreciate their consistent quality, friendly atmosphere, and certain standout menu items that keep me returning.
First, their customer service is one of their greatest strengths. From my first visit to today, staff have always greeted me warmly, remembering my name and usual order. Even during peak hours on Friday evenings, they manage wait times efficiently and check in regularly to refill tea or water without prompting. I especially appreciate that they never rush me out despite high turnover, allowing me to relax after long workdays. Their attentiveness feels genuine rather than forced, which is rare in many busy Calgary restaurants.
The salmon sashimi is a signature dish for me here. Each slice is cut with precision, maintaining an ideal balance between thickness and tenderness. The freshness is evident – no fishy aftertaste, only a clean, buttery texture that almost melts upon contact with the palate. Compared to other sushi restaurants I’ve tried in Calgary, their salmon sashimi maintains a consistently high standard. Occasionally, on extremely busy nights, I’ve received slightly thinner cuts, but the flavour has never disappointed. It’s simple yet shows their commitment to quality ingredients.
As for their teriyaki rice dish, I often order it either alongside sashimi or as a main when craving something warm and filling. The rice is always cooked perfectly – slightly sticky but not clumped – absorbing the savoury-sweet teriyaki sauce beautifully. The protein options for this dish, whether chicken or beef, are grilled with a slight char that adds depth to the sauce’s sweetness. I particularly love how they garnish it with fresh scallions and sesame seeds, giving a mild crunch and freshness to balance the rich sauce. Portion sizes are generous without being overwhelming, making it a great standalone lunch or dinner.
Overall, after nearly three years of weekly visits, this sushi place remains one of my top dining choices in Calgary. Their service feels personal, their salmon sashimi is fresh and expertly prepared, and their teriyaki rice dish never fails to satisfy. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for reliability, warmth, and simple Japanese comfort...
Read moreHaving lived in Vancouver for many years, I was able to experience good quality japanese cuisine so I’m quite particular. After moving to Calgary about a year ago, I have tried at least fifteen Japanese restaurants and Miku is one of the top two.
This review is based on four of my visits. The owners are friendly and pay extra attention to detail in all aspects. They listen and care about your feedback.
The chef is Amazing and knows the little details of making good Japanese food. Anyone can make sushi but finding a tasty ratio/harmony is the next level. This is what makes Miku special. Sushi rice - the key to good sushi that’s often missed by a lot of chefs. It’s always cooked right here. Never mushy or dry. Sashimi/nigiri - kept fresh and served at good temperature. Loin Katsu - tried it four times and it is second to none. He makes the best one in town. Crispy breadcrumbs that’s not soggy on the bottom! The meat is prepared right without any tendon/fat. The ratio of meat to breadcrumbs is perfect as well. I strongly recommend people to try. Rolls - the ratio of rice to ingredients is exceptional. Also, the ingredients and sauces are harmonious. Rich teriyaki sauce is a must try.
Strongly recommend this place to everyone. Thank you Miku for making every...
