This used to be my favourite sushi restaurant when it was called Sushi Tokyo and this was my first visit since the restaurant changed ownership. I have to say I was quite disappointed at the sizable rise in price and in the lowered overall quality of the food I received. It was decent tasting, don't get me wrong, but nowhere as good as it used to be (or should have been) and a good chunk of it was very visually unappealing and should never have left the kitchen to be served to a customer.
The very old looking wasabi and ginger had most definitely seen better days (the white ginger was actually turning brown like an sliced apple, something I've never seen before in all the sushi places I've been... tho total props for not using the processed pink stuff), and my tempura yams and coconut shrimp were WAY over cooked - just shy of being burned actually, especially the coconut shrimp. In fact, the coconut on the shrimp was such a dark brown that I did in fact think it was burnt at first, and the tempura batter on my yams and my avocados were two very visibly different colours and textures. One, the proper pale yellow tempura batter is supposed to be, the other the much darker colour of having being left cooking in the oil a little too long and barely salvageable. I was also surprised that a half order of a $11 appetizer plate, was just TWO coconut shrimp.
Finally, my Venom Roll tho overall delicious, had a majorly heavy handed mayo topping that kinda ruined it for me. Although, once I scraped some of it off and I could taste something other than just mayo in my mouth, it was quite good and a decent sized roll and I'd recommend ordering it. Just be sure to ask for only a little or no mayo squirted along the top, unless you love the taste of straight mayo. That said, it was definitely the best thing I ordered tonight, despite all that unnecessary mayo it was drowned in. I think a much lighter, sweet mango sauce drizzled across the top would have paired much better than the heavy tasting mayo because of the bit of mango in the roll, but that part is just an opinion and really more of a personal preference than anything else.
What really saved this restaurant from a low rating and a big thumbs down, was the exceptional service. The waitress I had was amazing, personable and accommodating, and I was suitably impressed that you're able to order half orders of just about everything on their menu. I don't know of any other sushi restaurant that does that. What a great option for people like me who LOVE sushi and always have a hard time choosing between favorites!
Still, because Sushi Tokyo spoiled me for it's lower prices (more bang for your buck) and their super fresh, yummy tasting and looking food, I won't be in any kind of hurry to go back to the new place. However I will say that despite tonight's disappointments, I'd be willing to give it another try in the future on the off chance they just had a bad night, but unfortunately, I won't be rushing out to do so...
Read moreExcellent selection of cuisine with very friendly service. I highly recommend Tokachi for everything from group events to a quick snack. Catering to a wide range of customers and tastes, the atmosphere is amplified with a nostalgic and off the beaten path musical track. High quality seafoods in conversational arrangements may be paired with Ramen, Udon and other noodles of impeccable quality in ever-unique yet classic Japanese and other Eastern soup broths. Seating is brilliantly diverse, including group feast options, inside a historic circular building whose architecture is a unique signature upon Calgary's Chinatown landscape. The soundtrack is by all measures the definitively best I have heard in the whole of downtown Calgary's dining scene. Exemplifying a youthful sojourn down a path of memories, the segue of "The Day" into "One Two Three" highlights a masterful pop transition into an accented Irish and Gaelic melody, while the subsequent Bondesque introduction into Perri's "Human" introduces a classically inspired soaring line of Broadway like anthemic sailing. The penultimate positioning of "Rewrite the Stars" and Ariana Grande's "One Last Time" projects onto the defined continuum of the listeners journey a beautiful sequential sense of the advancement of time, in a way that profoundly fuses in a warping fashion with the timelessly double-zero annum defining archways peppered by a transcendentally mirrored Japanese octohedral ceiling fixture. This distinctive dark forest path of beauty is notable in its ability to draw the diner-listener into a fatalistic spiral of inevitability, turning the dining experience into a defining experience of self reflection and even more, to realizations of inspired visions of a future that we all somehow know is coming, but now we finally have an ability to face with confidence. The architecture shines in magnificence as the bridge of a mighty warship braves the dark waves of the Pacific. Thunderous cannons of deep oak wood shine Bonsai tree light on the Calgary towers' swarms of deck aircraft as the Empire's battleship presides over 4th Avenue. The chef's command deck is gilded in bronze as food is served from the throne room, situated in a cylindrical dark tower inspired by the most sublime of high...
Read moreIt was our first time trying this place and it was a mistake, waste of time and money.
The service was terrible and everything took super long. I understand if maybe short staff or long waits or whatever, but this was unacceptable. It wasn’t even busy, there were only a couple tables. At least be nice about it and do the job properly, why does the customer have to tell you what to do? It took our waitress so long to bring the menu so we had to ask for it, then we had to ask to order because our waitress never came back then she said she’ll come back and then she never came back again so I had to ask AGAIN, then it takes an hour to receive our first dish (udon soup). We were happy to finally receive our food then realized they still didn’t give us utensils, so i asked and we waited long again, after eating it quick because we were starving at this point, we waited even longer to receive our next dish (sushi), at this point it’s been 2 hours. When we ate the sushi, the sushi rice was super sticky and not good. I then asked for an update on our drinks since our main courses are all out, why are the drinks not out still, taking so long and shouldn’t it have come in the beginning? Another 30 mins past and we finally received our drinks. I noticed the drinks were large size and had toppings which was not what I ordered and the waitress said we ran out of medium so we gave you large and normally we put pearls in but we also ran out of that too so we put jelly instead. Ok so why didn’t you guys tell me that beforehand or when the drinks were given out? Everything I had to ask and question about. I ended up asking for take out boxes for us because our stomachs weren’t feeling well after eating some of the food. We were at the restaurant for 3 hours, barely ate, left unhappy and they didn’t even care. The bill came out to be really expensive too hence not ordering much and ordering from the happy...
