If you're anything like me, when you're in the mood to go for Vietnamese food, there are no shortages of Vietnam restaurants available in Edmonton to satisfy your cravings. My wife and I are no strangers to many of these restaurants because it's one of our staples at least several times a month. Each restaurant has its own unique dish(es) so if you're anything like me, I take note of what dish each place is famous for...(at least to me and my wife). Hands down, the spring rolls will be Golden Bird. Salad Rolls would be Siam Thai Restaurant, but in this case, we decided we wanted Pho. And the best place to go for Pho, is Calgary Trail Restaurant in Edmonton. When you first walk in the decor is exactly the same as it was some 20 years ago, so it does need to be updated, but I don't come for the atmosphere...I come for exceptionally good food at a price that is totally fair for what you get. The gentleman who owns the establishment is always very quiet but when you get him talking he's really quite funny. I automatically ordered their very special Vietnamese iced coffee to start. If you haven't tried it before then you're in for a treat. Each restaurant uses their own espresso blend but Calgary Trail Restaurant uses (in my opinion) the best, which makes it outstanding. My wife on the other hand ordered the 3 colors Vietnamese drink. A traditional coconut based concoction that uses red bean and grass jelly, which creates a kaleidoscope of colors in your glass. It's really quite delicious. We invited 2 other friends to join us and I ordered the spring rolls and salad rolls to get the evening off to a good start. My wife ordered the very unusual Dill Fish Cake soup. She described her soup as a delicate but flavorful broth, that came with tender fish cake patties infused with a wonderful dill flavor. She absolutely loved it. I ordered my usual... number 118. Sweet and sour soup with Shrimp and Chicken. This place absolutely knocks this soup out of the park. With the sweet chunks of tomato and pineapple combined with spicy chicken broth with good sized prawns and chunks of chicken breast. A real satisfying meal that makes you leave nothing in the bowl at the end. It's so delicious, that it will be a soup that not only satisfies you but it literally nourishes the soul. It's our go to place when we want great food in a virtually quiet atmosphere. This place should be packed but unfortunately it never is. This is one place that will give you value for your hard earned money. So I suggest anyone reading this should patronize Calgary Trail Restaurant. If not, we may lose a hidden...
Read moreWe've all done this, drive past a place for YEARS and keep saying....I'll go there one day... Well after 13 years for me, 18 years for my friend we finally visited this place! Tip, pull onto the side road right after the Shell gas station. They have angle parking in one direction only. If you drive past the restaurant you'll have to drive behind the restaurant and double back to and park. Place is open concept and there were about four other tables that were occupied. We both ordered their iced coffee with condensed milk. I decided on their Satay Beef Noodle Soup, my gf had the #24, House Vermicelli Bowl. We were also served fresh hot tea. I love watching it drip and then when you mix and pour over the ice, soo satisfying. The lil spoon that came with the drink was also quite cute. Her bowl was very full and she loved the flavor. When I got my soup, my first instinct is to always taste the broth, however I tasted no peanut or nutty flavor. Had her try it too and she said it had some but I could not taste any nuttiness. The broth was clear, unlike other places where the broth is more creamy. For those who might be wondering, I've never had Covid so my taste buds are all good. We finished our meals and got our fortune cookies. Happy to have tried the place and next time I'll try something else...
Read morethis place has the yummiest food ever, you can tell it was made with care, the server is a sweet man who always made me feel welcomed when i would come here as a youth very hungry after practice. 10 years later they still mean so much to me and i see them every time i visit Edmonton. you cant buy atmosphere you just have to have it, and this place has the most relaxing and calm one I've ever experienced. the jasmine tea is always the perfect temp, the food tastes better than anything i can find in BC and i still wish i could walk down the street and grab some of his ice cream chocolate pears but i cant these days. i miss this place a lot im so happy to see they survived covid. 10/10 i have taken all my family here and even my nana ( who hates new food) loved this place. bring your family, sit and eat good food, this place has such a glow from the inside and charm. you cant buy that anywhere else....
