MY EXPERIENCE.
When I give these types of reviews I try to be as honest & unbiased as possible… it may come across a bit harsh sorry
THE PARKING.
One thing I was worried about was parking, downtown especially on Jasper, parking sucks, but to my surprise they have some rear parking and I got lucky! I found one right at the end. There is neighborhood parking around.
Don’t forget to register your plate at the front desk. you’re welcome
THE RESTAURANT.
This place from the entrance, leading into the foyer, it’s absolutely gorgeous. The exterior arch corridor receiving you into the front reception area is such a cool design feature. Walking into the foyer you can immediately tell they put a lot of work into this place.
Earth tone colors, wood 🪵 features and dark wrought iron metal with plants 🪴 to give it life and vibrancy. Inside you are teleported into somewhere else. The interior has that upscale, elegant feeling to it.
Inside is really impressive. I’m the main hall, you will see arrangement of plant, real plants. It’s trully a sign to behold. And near the exterior windows, front glass, there’s alot of plants! ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS. The plants cut through the grey, mundane Edmonton winter we see each year. That area of the restaurant felt like a greenhouse, it was very nice.
Choose to sit by the front windows. You won’t regret it.
THE FOOD.
I haven’t been to Earls in such a long time, but I was thrown back by the simplicity of the menu. Seems like they got rid of a lot of things which is OK simplifying the menu makes it easier for us and it seems like that is definitely focused on western food.
With a mix of Asian cuisine but it’s definitely more westernized Asian cuisine. It’s a mix of Italian it’s still lacking focus but from the looks of it, they’re taking your average favorite dishes from each culture and country and making making it there own.
For this meal, I decided to go with Italian we got the truffle tortellini. And I got steak added, and I also got the artisan bread. I have mixed feelings about my meal I was for lack of a better word underwhelmed. But it’s to be expected, these kind of restaurants are franchise and despite the interior being impressive I guess I expected more of an elevated taste. With most places in Edmonton, especially franchise restaurants the food always just taste mediocre.
If you are coming here for Earls, expect to have a familiar taste, and I think that’s what they’re going for, but he just plays along the safe zone. I don’t doubt that there’s talent in that kitchen and the team must have, a lot of skill to operate at such a nice restaurant, but despite all that they’re still subject to the franchise, which is rather disappointing, because I would love to see more creativity and unique signature dishes in such a restaurant. I was really missing something in every dish.
This was not my choice, but the person I was meeting with suggested dynamite sushi roll. From the moment she ordered it I didn’t set my expections too high. And that’ surprisely save me. The rice felt cold and old and everything felt dated and not fresh unfortunately but the taste was good. With the dynamite roll I felt that this place isn’t the place to go for this sort of meal so my suggestion don’t order this sort of items here. It’s not their specialty. Just give yourself context of the type of restaurant your in.
THE VERDICT.
I enjoyed my time eating here. The staff was incredibly professional and attentive! I was really impressed with the Decour, and how elegant this place really looked from the inside.
But after all my wonder, and reality settles in, it’s just another Earls restaurant, which to me serves mediocre food. It would be great to have a unique dish prepared by the kitchen staff because I’m sure that they would be able to breakthrough and show their creativity. Thanks for the wonderful meal and great...
Read moreTerribly unprofessional waitress who made it feel like we were not welcome at this location. Never had any such problems at the Clareview location, we always felt welcome and always chose Earls as our go-to place to hangout and have a good time. Unfortunately, our waitress was condescending and lacked the skills to remember any of our requests, such as providing us with a glass of water. I believe if you can’t even serve a glass of water properly there is seriously an issue with the whole service provided. Finally, after 20 minutes of waiting for said water (the waitress never once came by to check up on us), our waitress managed to swiftly come by and nonchalantly place the glasses of water as if we weren’t waiting for almost half an hour. However, the unprofessional actions do not stop there. After dropping off the water, she hastily left our table without asking if we wanted to order anything. My apologizes, but we have been waiting for forty minutes at this point just for water and yet you still did not ask for our orders. At this point, the whole table was quite irritated, but we were making up excuses for the waitress such as “oh maybe she’s having a bad day, we can’t be too angry.” Sadly, the excuses we made for the waitress were quickly forgotten when we had to wait yet ANOTHER twenty minutes just for her to come by and take our orders. My two friends ordered Sangria Wine, and we ordered four dishes. The important dish that finally peaked our astonishment at the lack of professionalism was when we received our Yam Fries. The Yam Fries were cold and burnt, and when we politely asked our waitress if it was possible to take it back to the kitchen to reheat it, she replied “Really? Give it a try, try it first and let me know, I’ll come back.” We were absolutely shocked. She never came back to check up on the issue, and we were left at the table staring at the cold burnt fries, untouched, yet still having to pay for it... By the time we finished all the food (aside from the Yam Fries), the two Sangria Wines were still missing, and it has been half an hour since we ordered. We saw her helping the table next to us so we patiently waited for her to finish serving them before asking her to come to our table, she walked straight past us so we had to politely call out to her. When she finally came over, my friend asked “excuse me, where is our Sangria wine?” She acted surprised and started to bring out her notepad to write the order of the two Sangria wines. Unbelievable. I asked for the bill at that point and told her “if the wines are not on their way, then that’s fine it’s not a problem, can we just have the bill please?” To which she replied “oh... uhhhm are you sure? Are you guys in a rush??” Perhaps we were in a rush at that point because we have been in a restaurant for an hour and a half being treated like an unwanted customer. Not once throughout the night have we gotten an apology, just condescending answers that implied we were not welcome. I understand if our waitress was having a very bad day, or was having issues that distracted her from providing the service she may usually give, but the service ultimately killed the whole mood of the table when we were just out to have fun. The vibe we got was that the waitress took a short glance at us and decided that she did not like ‘our’ type of people. The date and time are on the receipt as is the...
