Iâd like to share my recent experience at this restaurant. This isnât my first visitâIâve been here several times before, even back when it was still called Chicken Hauz. Iâve always supported Filipino-owned businesses, especially here in Edmonton, and have generally enjoyed the food. But during my latest visit, something happened that left me feeling uncomfortable and disappointed.
While placing my order, I spoke in English. I chose to do so out of courtesyâafter all, weâre in an English-speaking country, and I never assume that everyone in the room speaks Filipino. I myself am Filipino and have spoken the language all my life, but I believe using English in public settings helps ensure clear and inclusive communication, especially when youâre not sure who else might be around.
What upset me was hearing one of the staff members say to another, âBakit ka nag-English? Mukhang Pilipino naman siya.â (Why are you speaking English? He looks Filipino anyway.)
This was said in front of me, and I found it disrespectful and inappropriate. It made me feel stereotyped based purely on my appearance, as if I had no right to be addressed in English because I âlook Filipino.â It may seem like a small comment, but it reflects a deeper issueâa lack of professionalism and awareness about cultural sensitivity.
In a multicultural city like Edmonton, and especially in customer service, itâs essential to respect peopleâs language choices and avoid assumptions based on race or ethnicity. Everyone should feel welcome and respected, no matter what language they speak or what they look like.
I hope management takes this as constructive feedback. I still want to support this business, but I encourage the owners to provide training on respectful communication and cultural inclusivity. Good food should come with good serviceâand part of that is making every customer feel seen...
Read moreWent for lunch with a coworker. Both ordered the chicken burger and fries. Took 30+min to get our food, and at least 5 people who arrived and ordered after us (several ordered the same meals as well) were served before us. We were asked 4 times whether we were eating in or to-go orders. 4th time we were asked what we had even ordered. Finally get our order and it was served in a to-go bag...At this point we just wanted to leave and get back to the office anyways. Get back to office in under 5min walk. Food is cold. Chicken sandwich is so flat and poorly breaded I mistook it as some kinda fish fillet they might've mixed up. The chicken was painfully dry and bland, the sandwich was overwhelmed with ketchup of all things, and there was a single lone kraft singles cheese slice atop it. The sandwich tasted about as unappetizing as it appeared.
Next was the fries. Somehow overcooked and bland, yet limp and still coated in a very thin layer of seasoning that contained no salt and wasn't very flavorful. Finally the Pineapple Juice that is included with the meal (which we were not aware of, simply served to us instead of any choice of drinks) is basically 1/4 pineapple juice and 3/4 water.
Now not even covering the fact tables weren't clean, and I think I've gotten better service from the automated McDonald's kiosks. This experience was so universally negative that I would give this a 0 rating if possible. We both ended up tossing out most of our meals and agreed that we could've gotten better food at a gas-station.
Now maybe they were having a extremely off-day, perhaps we caught them when the kitchen was imploding in on itself. But our experience and impression was so poor that I'd say skip the chicken burger/fries and buy some potato chips instead. Or try the Inasal everyone seems to...
Read moreMe and my friend decided to pick up in person but take out dinner tonight. I went there knowing that I wanted to get the fried chicken and fries, and I knew that my friend would want to get the inasal chicken that everyone was talking about on here.
When we got there they were completely sold out of fried chicken (and felt genuinely awful about it) as well as onion rings. So last minute I chose to order the 3 kid-sized chicken fingers with fries. The fingers aren't fingers. . . If you have children be advised that they will not be the shape that you're expecting. They almost seemed like thin pieces of chicken chips? Imagine the shape of a corn chip, but inside of the corn chip was chicken. It was strange. I can tell though because of how it was fried that the fried chicken would have been really good!
The fries were just okay, the odd bite had more seasoning than the rest of them, but honestly not ones that I would want to order again.
The chicken that she got was really good although she upgraded from rice to poutine. The poutine they gave they put into the same large takeout boxes. Everything else, with just a few cheese curds on top of it. So, not a very good poutine.
When we got there about half of the tables were filled up with people, it was a light atmosphere but there was a lot of din and so one-on-one conversation would have been a little bit more limited.
Overall though, for a place to take out from it's a solid-- will in a pinch, won't unless I want that good, very specific chicken-- kinda place.
I'm sure that some of their other non-fried foods are delicious, and I think there's a chance. I will...
