Edmonton's culinary scene welcomes a new contender, Makchang Dodook, a Korean BBQ chain promising an immersive dining experience. As the smoke of anticipation settles, it becomes evident that this establishment, though ambitious, grapples with finding its equilibrium. Venturing into the heart of Makchang Dodook, we explored the core of its offerings, primarily the BBQ selection. The Beef Combo, an assemblage of boneless short ribs, garlic-seasoned ribs, dodook-seasoned ribs, and makchang, showcased a decent array of flavors. However, the enthusiasm was met with a sobering realization—the BBQ dining option, albeit extensive, comes at a premium that outstrips the perceived value. The meat quality, while satisfactory, didn't quite align with the elevated price point. A foray into the Galbi-flavored pork belly and fresh pork belly further emphasized the average nature of the meat offerings. While not lacking in taste, they struggled to justify their place in the upper echelons of pricing within the BBQ spectrum. However, the culinary journey took a turn for the better as we explored the non-BBQ segment of the menu. The 'Squid Game' inspired Korean lunch box and the Korean spicy cold noodle emerged as stars, not just in terms of taste but also in offering a more reasonable pricing structure. The flavors were vibrant, captivating the palate and elevating the overall dining experience. In hindsight, it's evident that Makchang Dodook shines brightest when it ventures beyond the BBQ realm. The 'Squid Game' lunch box, an ode to pop culture, and the spicy cold noodle, a refreshing delight, exemplify the restaurant's potential for delivering flavorful experiences without breaking the bank. As Makchang Dodook navigates the dynamic landscape of Edmonton's culinary scene, there's promise in its diverse offerings. For those seeking an affordable and delectable journey through Korean cuisine, the non-BBQ options present a compelling argument. However, the BBQ aficionado may find the current pricing structure somewhat challenging to reconcile with the perceived value.

The food and service were excellent. Ventilation was decent for a DIY grill. For 3 people we ordered the Mix Combo 2 (5/5) which had both beef and pork. Their meat cuts deserve a special mention. For the included stew we chose the Budae/Sausage stew (5/5) which was tasty and mildly spicy. Corn cheese dish was ok (4/5). They also include a lot sides (i.e. little salads, pickled veggies, lettuce for wrapping, dipping salts/sauces). Topped everything off with some soju and a birthday suprise (from the restaurant) for our friend. We had a great evening.

Gotta come here and try everything at least once. It is a little more on the pricier side (my group of 4 spent almost $400 collectively) but it was all definitely worth it. There was no part of the meal that we did not like or enjoy. It really felt like they worked their ingredients to perfection. Only downside is rice isn’t included in the combos BUT the quality of rice they serve makes it forgivable. And maybe they don’t include it so you can simply enjoy the meats on their own. Anyways, I definitely recommend getting their pork intestines (Makchang) as it is their specialty. And the rice balls to pair with the meat as it is just a perfect combo. Their sauces were amazing, and even their salt was addicting lol. Their steamed egg was just strangely good for how simple it was, and every cut of meat was tender, juicy, and flavourful. It’s as if they got it straight off the animal. And on top of the amazing food (and fast, attentive service) the aesthetic of the whole restaurant was so well done. It made me feel like I was in a restaurant in Korea. They got every detail down to a tee. Their vents for their grills made it so you can leave the place not even smelling a bit like smoke. And you can eat in a jail cell. Plus there’s a fun mascot to take photos by. Man they got it all.

The owners are nice and very friendly. The meat quality is excellent, and the side dishes are delicious; however, you need improvement in customer service and communication.

DRINKS: When serving the drinks, please ensure the glasses are clean before serving them to the customers. One of our glass of water is dirty.

NAPKINS: Please ensure that there are enough napkins on the table, as we only have 1 piece of napkin for a family of 5. If possible, please have it ready on the table to avoid additional work for you, and the customers don’t have to press the buzzer to ask for it.

TABLE: If the customers order a lot and you serve the side dishes or starters first, please remove the empty plates when they are done to have more room for their main orders or the rest of their orders.

PENDING ORDERS: When you expect the pending orders to take longer than 30 minutes, PLEASE PLEASE let your customers know or check on them, and update the customers every 15 minutes. We finished our side dishes and other main dishes, and we were still waiting for the rest for almost an hour. If we didn’t press the buzzer, we wouldn’t know that you guys are still cooking rice for our orders. We were not happy when our Bibimbap came COLD when you said you were cooking one, so we expect it to be hot.

REPLACING THE ORDERS: PLEASE communicate with your customers regarding replacing or substituting ingredients or part of their orders. Your menu is kinda expensive that doesn't include rice as a side for Family Combo Order which is also weird, so we decided to order 4 BIBIMBAP, it all came late and we were surprised when it doesn't come with EGG and the picture shows it also INCLUDE a full size sliced of spam, but we got 3 SMALL ROUND PIECES of SPAM as substitute for the EGG. Having that is not worth it for $12.

**IF YOU ARE OUT OF THE INGREDIENTS OR PART OF THE CUSTOMER’S ORDER, please let your customers know and ASK if it’s okay OR ask if they would like an alternative or you can suggest too, so they won’t be surprised and get disappointed.

Overall, our experience is okay, the food is good. They still made an effort to give us eggs before we left (so we brought it home) and even gave us sliced of apples as appreciation for our patience and as their apology. This feedback is for their improvement only and to do better to meet the customer’s expectations and...

Was really happy with our experience here!! Apart from the really cool jail theme, the seats were comfortable and I really liked the style of hoodvent, when we left we didn't smell like meat at all like we're used to after KBBQ.

The food itself was wonderful, the meat and intestine felt very fresh and tasted great een when only dipped into sauce. Speaking of sauces, everyone at the table got a dish of two sauces and one salt portion, which I feel made the whole dining experience really smooth, no awkward reaching for sauces or anything.

Also, we were pleasantly surprised to see that a lot of sides came with what we ordered; we got three proteins and in addition we recieved: pasta salad, potato salad, beansprout salad, lettuce and radish for wrapping the meat, kimchi, garlic, jalapenos slices, pickled garlic leaves, various vegetables for grilling, seaweed salad and a special sauce for the grilled intestine. On top of those the staff gave us a plate of dumplings and tteokbokki for free, which was super sweet of them!!

The amount of food we recieved was so generous and for four people, $100 worth of protein plus all the sides were more than enough. The staff were really friendly and told my parents about the different kinds of soju too, and checked on us in a very non intrusive way througout the meal :)

Overall I would highly recommend Makchang, super good value, great atmosphere and staff, and you won't leave smelling like...
