Visited Sugar Marmalade a couple times now and had such varied experiences.
The food posted below was from my very first visit with them. We were sat at our table by the server and handed us menus and used the call button on the table to order. This is a very cool concept finally adapted in a Halifax resto! The restaurant is very dessert focused as the dessert options in their menu takes up most the first few pages. We mostly ordered food and liked the the ones we ordered (the ones below). We didn’t get to take a photo of the taiwanese chicken but that was our favourite. We ordered two but the second one was kinda saltier than the first one even though we ordered the same flavour. I was somewhat disappointed on the braised chicken I ordered, mainly because it did not look like what was on the menu at all. It tastes okay but would recommend to order something else. I got the egg waffle for dessert and chose the black sesame flavour but it tasted like a regular waffle - I would go for the shaved ice dessert instead as it was almost same in price and looks so much better after seeing other tables order them. One visit isn’t enough to try out the other stuff on the menu.
I came back for a second visit and waited by the front entrance and the server just told us to sit anywhere - which was confusing because during our previous visits, we were always sat to our table and waited by the server. During this visit, we weren’t handed menus but asked to scan the QR code on the table to place an order. This is a convenient option, however the establishment does not provide wifi.
Overall, pretty cool new spot to try familiar asian food and desserts but hopefully be more consistent as they...
Read moreIve been blessed to have tried many of these dishes while growing up in Vancouver. I know, Halifax isn’t Vancouver. That said, I do expect a good or a decent meal from a franchise.
The waitress was nice and friendly, they looked very busy. The glass water cups that were served to us were not safe to drink out of. There were chips at the top and it was splitting down the middle. The waitress was quick to replace the cups.
Mince pork on noodle- bland. I didn’t like the egg.
Ginseng chicken soup- nope. I don’t expect the same soup as how my mom would make it. I think the tell tale sign was seeing a girl sitting at a table across from me spit it back into the bowl. It was too salty and the flavour, again not sure how to explain it, but it wasn’t good. I think I had 3 spoonfuls, and that was it.
Baked creamy cheesy pork chop on noodle- It was bland.
Curry fish balls- I can’t expect the balls to be stewing in the curry sauce for hours. It was salty, and decent.
Popcorn chicken Taiwanese style- my favorite dish of the meal. I would order again.
I would totally go back and try either other dishes or the desserts. I probably won’t order the other dishes again, except for the...
Read moreI first noticed the place because of the IG promos, but didn’t visit thinking its hyped up until a colleague recommended the shaved ice. When we went, it wasn’t busy, there were a lot of empty tables. The store has ample space and is located on one of the prime locations. It was my first time having shaved ice and I liked it. Had the mango flavoured one, underestimated the portion size; for reference one diy shaved ice is enough to satisfy 2 hungry dessert lovers or 3 people with normal affinity to desserts ; I had to ask for take out of the remaining. Cheese cake wasn’t anything to die for, I’ve had better ones in Halifax. My partner had fusion popcorn chicken Korean style , both of us absolutely loved it ;5/5 will recommend. Hongkong style stirred noodles was good but can’t say excellent.
Service was good, can’t say excellent;waiter was responsive and attended to us when called. Also liked the idea of online order like in other places to avoid having to talk.
Overall liked the experience, would give it...
