We were so excited to try 3rd Mom Spicy Hot Pot since the area has a limited number of hotpot restaurants. The staff were friendly and patient. Even though there was a language barrier, they put an effort into explaining the flavours of their soup bases. The atmosphere was bright and airy.
They had two different pricing: regular and premium. Walking in, you grab a tray with two separate bowls to separate the premium from the regular when they weigh them. The regular options consisted of vegetables and non-meat options. These were charged under $2.99 per 100 grams. As for the premium options, these included the meat and seafood, and were charged under $3.99 per 100 grams.
We chose their spicy hot pot soup and the spicy peanut butter with soup. The peanut butter one is a must. The nuttiness added a layer of creaminess to the soup. Both were definitely spicy but we really enjoyed the spiciness in Chinese cuisines. If you’re not familiar with how spicy their hotpots are, I suggest to ask the staff for a different soup base. I noticed the staff didn’t ask whether we wanted our soups to be mild or medium. I’m guessing this is because of the language barrier but we would’ve preferred the spiciest level if we were asked.
We also had the option for unlimited rice and ice jelly for an extra cost to which you can help yourself to at the corner of the restaurant.
However, there was no station to make or prepare your dipping sauces unlike the hotpot restaurants we’ve been to in Markham which was a let-down.
Overall, a decent spot in the city but we still prefer the...
Read moreI feel that this place is a decent alternative to other malatang / self-serve hotpot places, but I wouldn’t find myself wanting it come back. There are not too many options for ingredients to add to the pot, compared to similar restaurants. Moreover, they have a system where there’s two compartments in which you put ingredients of two different tiers. I didn’t even know I was supposed to do that until I was told verbally, as there were no English signs indicating that rule and I usually just glance over Chinese text. I tried the mild spicy hot pot base here and in my opinion, it was a bit too oily and extremely salty. I couldn’t even eat the tofu puffs because they tasted like pure salt. I do think their unlimited rice and bingfen option for $3 is nice, and it really calmed the spice and saltiness. I was also surprised that we had to pay an extra $3 for the spicy hot pot soup base. Those charges add up quickly and many other malatang places don’t charge extra for the soup base.
Overall, the atmosphere inside the restaurant is also quite open and clean, and there were many open seats on a weekday evening. Service was decent and quick as well, I have no complaints...
Read moreThis place is hidden in a little street, but was packed to the brim when we entered. Not surprising after my visit because Never have i ever seen a deal for malatang 🤟😏 cannot beat these prices, great flavours and a free soft serve vanilla or matcha cone after!
How it works is you grab a tray that has two bowls, one for premium and one for normal selection. Premium is mainly proteins ($3.99/100g) and normal is everything else like veggies and noodles and a few proteins ($2.99/100g). Weigh, choose your soup base and pay. 10% discount if you pay cash. My bowl ended up being around $12, I paid with cash.
There are mainly spicy soup bases other than a peanut sauce and tomato soup. I would highly recommend the tomato soup as i got that one and it was so savoury and i drank a good bunch of it. I also recommend getting ingredients that can soak up the soup because the lettuce with the soup flavour was DIVINE. Absolute CINEMA ✋🤤🤚.
Staff are very friendly and will remember you and say hi too! (They did to my friend because he came a few days ago too). Overall great experience and will come back if craving...
