I prefer Arepera over the other arepa restaurants on the plateau. They have a simple selection of plates and dishes that makes it easy to choose (there's basically one or two kinds of arepa per type of protein).
Unlike some of the other places, Arepera always seems to be consistent in the quality of their dishes and sauces, so if you're a creature of habit that is also a plus. It's also a certified Gluten-free establishment, I believe, so they only serve GF dishes, and drinks (like GF beer), and there is no risk of cross contamination for people who are celiac.
The only couple of downsides to this place are:
The restaurant itself is a bit stark. Despite having bright walls, nice art, and church pews as entryway benches, it's basically just one giant room with cafeteria style tables. There's very little privacy and the sound echoes quite a bit so you can hear other people's conversations quite clearly. It also feels really chilly in the winter, so if you're a fan of cozy this probably isn't the place for you.
They don't do delivery anymore (it's been a few years since they stopped, but this review is long overdue), so if you want to order in, you have to go to the restaurant and get takeout. I still think it's worth it if you're...
Read moreBeen close to a decade since I first wrote a 5 star review on TripAdvisor upon our first visit and this time I wanted to share it on Google. We visit this place annually (other than lockdown year) from out of town. A proper gluten free restaurant. Over these years since being introduced to Areparas we've tried other places to compare, in different cities and countries. We also noticed over the years some menu changed here, I really miss the Crackling Arepera but the Pork Belly is my replacement and amazing. The point of this updated review a decade later is after over the years trying different Arepara places hands down this place is our benchmark! Each time we return and I take my first bite, I am instantly transported back to the wonderful memories and feelings upon tasting the food here like the first time. I am reminded why they are our benchmark for their ingredient quality, taste, prep, portion, their 2 sauces and why we must continue to return to enjoy such great food at reasonable prices by this Arepera owner and the team. I really want as many people to...
Read moreI went with a group of friends. We had to wait about 15 minutes which didn't bother us because it was a friday night and we didn't have a reservation. The menu had many options, beef, chicken, fish, veggies, etc. To start things off, I chose the 3 piece beef empanadas. They were small, but good with the avocado sauce they provided. Next, my meal was a plate of beans, rice, fried plantains, feta cheese and some shredded beef. I found the food quite dry, but mixing it with the avocado sauce they provided us in a bottle made the meal way better. To finish, for dessert I took the plantain cheesecake. It was tiny, but the best part of my meal. The taste of the plantain was subtle, but complemented the cheese perfectly! I found the service lacking. The waiters rarely came to our table for some reason and we tried getting their attention but they wouldn't come. They were still friendly people. Overall, the experience was quite average, the cheesecake...
