I am neither a pasta fan (probably because my mother stuffed us with pasta e Fagioli like 4 times a week while growing up), nor a potato fan and especially NOT a gnocchi fan, but once in a blue moon I will get a rare craving for pasta and tonight was that night! I went to door dash intending to order pizza, but I saw the gnocchi. I suddenly wanted it. What was I thinking!!?? I hate gnocchi! But I ordered it and immediately after confirming I thought I made a huge mistake. All the odds out there were against this decision. What gnocchi could possibly travel well and not be soggy before getting to eat it? It was also 7:30pm and I thought it would sit in my stomach like a brick by the time I got to eat it. Well....... The gnocchi got here in record time (I'm writing this review at 8:04pm), it was still hot and the stench of gorgonzola was sublime! I took my first bite (and I can tell you that is the reason I'm now writing this review) and I lost track of everything. The gnocchi is incredible! I don't know why people can't get gnocchi right. It's always so gross and mushy and just not appetizing in any way whatsoever, but THIS gnocchi was glorious! It was firm, it wasn't pasty, had a nice bite and the sauce was so good I could drink it. I devoured the entire plate in a matter of minutes (and I'm normally a slow eater), just shoveling it in because of how good it was. Needless to say, this night could have gone down as a horrible gnocchi disaster, but instead, I can now say that I like gnocchi... Only the gnocchi at pizzeria dei compari. I only have a photo of the empty plate as proof that I wasn't expecting this experience to go well so I couldn't have been bothered to take a before picture, however it went so well that...
Read moreUndercooked pizza toppings and dough! For decades, this used to be a great place for pizza, but in the past 6-months, or so, became one of the worst. We asked for our food to be re-baked and the cooks reluctantly agreed, but it was still undercooked. The waiter apologized and we kindly asked if he would notify management, which he said he did, but nothing was done about it. We expected the manager to at least take care of our concern, but to no avail; instead the manager, doorman, and another waiter just starred at us; we took this as a sign of micro-intimidation. Unbelievable! We spent almost 100$ and were so very disappointed. It seems they didn't care losing 2 clients (since the place is usually packed). We came to the conclusion that the oven was not hot enough (too expensive to heat it accordingly...900 degrees). This used to be my favourite place, and we usually give people a second chance, but because our drink was also weak (bloody mary...1 oz. alcohol) and due to the fact management did not give a damn about us, we decided to give a bad review. BTW, the whole-wheat dough we had often ordered is now mixed with white dough, there is a drastic change in the taste and colour of the dough. Shame on them for ruining our night and...

Where: Pizza Dei Compari What: An Italian pizza place in the Latin Quarter How was it: What a hidden gem. Ironically this gem is hidden in a touristy part of town. What you would think was a tourist trap is this pizza place. We took over 5 years to give it a try and just now wish that we would have had the courage to try it sooner ! We Canadians love pizza, but we love americanized pizza - not the real deal. By real deal I mean pizza made the Italian way. What I (Serge) thought was good pizza 5-10 years ago is not the same now, for a couple of reasons. 1. I've travelled to Italy and had the best pizza ever and 2. My wife is Brazilian and that's also a great pizza (they are quick and consistent !). There is a great Italian influence in Brazil and some would also say the best pizza is there and not in Italy. This said, I've grown to appreciate pizza cooked in a wood oven - it gives the pizza a great authentic taste, makes the crust crispy with sometimes a little char. mmm I'm hungry now. Grade: Eli = 5, Serge = 5 Recommend: Yes, try this place - the pizza...
