I came here with my mother for her birthday and we chose to do the tasting menu. I want to go through my full 2.5 hour experience at Hexagon restaurant.
I gave the food category a 3 star because I’ll be honest it was not the tastiest michelin starred food I’ve had. One of the “snack items” I can’t remember the name but it had such a strong mayonnaise and egg taste it was not a delightful bite… this other snack item honestly just tasted like a vietnamese fresh roll without the peanut butter sauce. The fish used in the hirame ceviche was difficult to cut and even biting it with my teeth was difficult. One other thing I wasn’t particularly thrilled with was that they served duck twice. They served Duck Pibil with the Nixtamal and then they served duck again with the Aged Duck course. It would be better if various forms of protein were served in my opinion. The plating style however was beautiful and the plates chosen were all unique and eye pleasing. The Hokkaido Scallop was the most delicious course overall, absolutely amazing! The Black Cod was cooked absolutely perfectly and it melted in my mouth. The A3 Wagyu was tastey but didn’t stand out to me and I disliked the creamed spinach on the side but that might just be my own taste buds. I also was excited because online the website menu said it would be A5 wagyu and when I asked the server for clarification she stated it was A5 however the handout given to me at the end stated it was A3 wagyu. The main dessert SK Wild Rice was phenomenal, I enjoyed every bite. The tiny chocolate dessert was also delicious and the sorbert as well. The little pumpkin/squash pie had too strong a seasoning and was almost a bit spicy which I did not prefer.
Now I want to discuss service. I’ll be honest and say the organization of the restaurant seemed a bit hectic. It seemed like all the staff were all over the place. It was so loud in the restaurant I struggled to hear our server. When the chef’s or servers would present and explain each dish it was also difficult to hear what they were saying. The tables were quite dark so whenever the server would come around to wipe the table they would miss spots. They changed cutlery between each course and had a long chopstick like stand to lean the cutlery on which I very much liked. I dislike when my cutlery touches the table so I want to say this was a great detail they added to the dining experience. Our server however was very nice and she refilled our water glasses multiple times.
Atmosphere. I’m the type of person that prefers a quieter atomosphere but there is nothing wrong with a louder one as well if that if your prefference. I personally didn’t like how it was so loud I needed to move closer to my mother to have a conversation and how I couldn’t properly hear the course explainations. One other thing I want to mention is the bathroom. Soap was dripping from the top of it and leaking out onto the counter, at a michelin star restaurant I personally expect it to be very cleanly. One last thing I want to mention that I disliked was when I was leaving the restaurant I wanted to ask a question to one of the staff members but they didn’t address me right away. Another staff member then walked infront of me and turned his back to me to speak with the other individual for a good 10 seconds before addressing me. I found that to be very rude and unprofessional. Having worked in the hospitality business all staff members should address customers the moment they make it clear they require assistance.
I spent over $500 for this experience and this restaurant was awarded a michelin star in both 2024 and 2025. My opinions are based off of my personal experience at this restaurant and in comparison to other michelin star restaurants I have eaten at...
Read moreWe visited Hexagon earlier this evening (July 12, 2025), for a celebratory birthday. We arrived significantly earlier than expected, however, the host was extremely courteous & understanding, seating us at our reserved table. Thankfully, our reservation time was for the early evening, so, no other patrons were occupying said table. Great lively atmosphere with an open kitchen/bar layout - potential visitors take note: this is not a quiet subdued establishment if you are seeking a place of respite, say for an intimate, romantic dinner for two. All of our wait staff were genuinely kind, attentive and gracious, albeit, our primary waitress was rather "green" and we sensed she was rushing us to order absolutely everything; i.e. appetizers, mid-course items & entrees, when in fact, we had only decided on the first and second course items. With that said, all of the dishes came out literally one right after the other (very little room on the small tables and ours was a party of 5). There was thankfully, a nice break before the entrees arrived, during which, the wait staff cleared all the dishes, refilled libations and cleaned off the table. The drinks were hum-drum and nothing to write home about - zero fizz in the carbonated beverages, semi-flat & warm sparkling water for the table, only 2 choices for caffeine lovers: espresso and Americano, and, I expected a more elaborate/artful garnish for my mocktail - not the proverbial mint sprig ..... yet .... again. We did not have any wine, so on that front, I cannot comment. The food is definitely the star of this culinary haunt. It was absolute perfection. Between the 5 of us, we ordered 7 different appetizers/mid-courses, 3 different entrees and 3 different desserts - each and every dish was nicely presented at the perfect temperature with a great mingling of flavours and textures that were incredibly satisfying. What this restaurant lacks in the minute details of the overall dining experience, it more than makes up for in the calibre of the dishes. Oh, and if anyone from this restaurant is reading my review would you kindly do the following: 1. Please sharpen your steak knives, or better yet, get new ones, preferably better quality. 2. Your one lone restroom on the main floor is in the most precarious spot and dimly lit - not great for folks with disabilities given it is an "accessible-style" bathroom. 3. The menu covers are looking worse for wear and need an overhaul. 4. The choice of music/soundtrack is hard on the ears - I think Starbucks even has more appropriate jams. 5. Given that you have one Michelin star, wouldn't it be nicer to present "take-away/leftover food" in a more polished tote? Brown paper bags are so last year. 6. Some bite-sized chocolate truffles presented with the cheque would be a lovely and welcome touch. 7. Last, but not least, continue creating your gastronomic magic, because at the end of the day, it is really all about the food. ...
Read moreIt really is unfortunate that I have to leave this review as we really wanted to enjoy this restaurant. But instead, it turned out to be one of the worst dining experiences we’ve had in a long time. The hostesses out front were great but that was the end of our positive experience.
Our original reservation, which we booked over a week in advance, was for outdoor patio seating. Upon arrival, despite many available open tables, we were placed inside at a table in the back, beside the kitchen. This we were able to overlook. Our server, without introducing himself, came to our table and pretty rudely asked what we wanted to drink in a flat tone. (We later found out his name as John Torrens.) Along with our alcoholic drinks, a requested bottle of water was brought which John plopped onto the table without pouring the water into our empty glasses (typical service at ‘high end’ restaurants?). Small detail, so we also overlooked. However, what came next was unacceptable; we sat at our table for 30 mins without anyone approaching us to take our order. John walked back and forth, talked and laughed with other tables around us, and even stood idly by with the chefs. We tried to get his attention, made eye contact several times, and still nothing. It wasn’t until a chef(!!) noticed us waiting did he get John to finally attend to us. When we mentioned our displeasure, John’s response was “Well sorry, what do you want to order now?”. His seemingly initial indifference about our experience made us decide to leave right then. A far cry from the high end restaurant they aspire to be.
This restaurant touts themselves as a “Canadian rising Michelin” restaurant. From our experience, this statement cannot be farther from the truth. They compare themselves to Alo restaurant, which is laughable. Alo’s attention to service detail is comparable to top world restaurants. Hexagon, not even close.
We felt completely unwelcome here and our business unwanted. In the 30 mins we were sitting there, four different waiters attended a similar two-person table near us (including John). We considered that COVID precautions may have played a factor, but after seeing their interactions with other patrons, that just couldn’t be it. Maybe it was because we didn’t look important. Or maybe because we are minorities/non-white. But based on other friends’ similar experiences here, the same pattern of certain patrons being treated like second class customers is too much of a coincidence to not be true.
We are reasonable people and understand there are circumstances where service may be delayed. Based on the series of events that happened, we felt mistreated as guests and made our position to leave. We hope Hexagon wakes up (since other negative reviews also stem from their poor service), and Hexagon realize that all patrons should be treated with the same attention at ‘fine dining’...
