Went to Sotto Sotto Oakville on Feb 9th this year for our twins BDay dinner as a party of 4. We were literally the only customers in the restaurant that night due to the NFL game. You would think that our food would be great top notch for a restaurant at this price point.
Well ... my supposedly hot soup was on the coolish side while my husband's was warm.
Our server heard me state the same to my son to whom I gave my soup to so he can finish it off as I could only take a few spoonfuls as it really did not taste good being so cold in temp.
Well ... you would think that our server would catch on and ensure our entrees would be prepared and served hot and taste good as expected.
But you would be wrong !!
My husband's food was slightly cool which we thought might have stood on the counter longer than needed waiting for our other entrees to be done. The twins meals was good.
BUT ... my meal once again was pathetically not good. I ordered the veal scallopini in lemon wine sauce with roasted potatoes and some pitly veggies. Not only was I shocked to see 3 VERY thin and small pieces of veal, which once again was warm and not hot. But the potatoes were LITERALLY cold and the veggies coolish.
My son asked to touch my food to check as he could not believe me that once again my food was cold and he too was very disappointed. I left the potatoes and veggies and just ate the 3 very thin and small veal pieces ... expensive meal for so little food and not palatable.
I once again mentioned this to our server as she came by to fill up our glasses with water, but she made no apologies and just walked away.
You would think us being the only customers there they would pay attention to detail especially with the issue with the soup. It appears obviously their kitchen was prepared to serve us that night since they knew they had no formal reservations that night.
My family knows me too well that if ever a meal is not prepared properly I would politely ask for it to get cooked as needed, usually with medium-rare being rare for meat type of thing.
But since this was a special day for our twins I decided to not make a stink even after our server knew the previous course was cold and I had a right to get upset.
This was our 3rd time to this restaurant and location in 8 months. First time was good, second was okay, but the third time this months was a flop.
Sadly to say we will not be coming back to this restaurant Sotto Sotto. We were to have another get together early March in Oakville where the suggestion was Sotto Sotto but we definitely made a point to not go here ... and we will be going to Buca Di Bacco ... going there 2 times in March.
Buca Di Bacco might not have as an elegant atmosphere but the food all 4 times we have been there in 2024 has been great !!!
Sotto Sotto ... this is not acceptable for such poor food preparation for a meal that cost us close to $400 that night with only 1 alcoholic drink ... and there was no tax on this bill.
We came all the way from Etobicoke just to come back to your restaurant where we could have just as well gone to Allegro close to where we live, where their food has ALWAYS been consistently great over the past 12 yrs and we could have saved the trip, but our twins wanted a different Italian restaurant as we visit Allegro often.
If you did not have the desire to serve us that night due to you having a VERY slow night, you should have advised us to come another night as we might have had a better experience ... giving you that grace as to why it was not a good experience for us.
Disappointed ... is an...
Read moreMy 3 friends and I chose Sotto Sotto as a place to celebrate one of our milestone birthdays this evening and to say we were disappointed with the whole experience is an understatement. The food was expensive and nothing special and the service was abhorrent.
Food: we ordered a pizza to share, the carbonara, the fettuccini truffle special, the calamari and the chicken scallopini. The pizza was decent, everything else was just okay but the carbonara was terrible. I enjoy my pasta al dente and this was borderline uncooked spaghetti with a little crunch in the centre. The overall taste of this dish was off putting too as we had tried this at the Toronto location and it was far superior than its Oakville counterpart. We were also shocked that the fettucini truffle special turned out to be $60+ considering the pasta was nothing special. $60 for a small plate of pasta that wasn't even mind-blowing? Absolutely absurd. We were shocked at the price but we should have asked for the price before ordering, lesson learned for next time. Overall, the food was not even close to being as good as it should be for the price. Highly overpriced and undeveloped flavours.
Service: Now the food was meh, but the service was absolutely terrible. Our waitress seemed off from the get-go, seeming a little displeased with us asking for extra chili oil for the bread but we chalked it up to maybe it being a busy night and it was no big deal initially. However, once I politely mentioned that the carbonara was uncooked, she immediately got defensive, took the plate with the leftover spaghetti in a huff and told us she had to speak with the manager. She comes back and says to us "the chef and the manager have both tested the spaghetti and it was cooked perfectly al dente". She then argued with us whether or not we were incorrect for suggesting that it was uncooked. The condescending tone she had took us all back and we were shocked. I have never ever had any waitress talk to me the way she talked to us. It was extremely rude and basically telling us that we were in the wrong because the pasta was "perfect". She also INSISTED that she asked us how the food was and that we said it was good, which was inaccurate. She asked us how the pizza was as it was our appetizer but never came back to ask about our pastas/mains. Regardless of this, it all seemed so bizarre that she would even argue with us over all of this and this interaction made us feel incredibly awkward. I asked to speak with a manager and after a length amount of time, the manager came to our table and initially started defending her. Only after my friend said it was her birthday and that we were having a stressful time did he start to apologize and want to "make it up" to us, which he did by providing dessert and coffee. Although appreciated, we did not really feel heard regarding the whole situation. I do have to mention that the waiter who served us the dessert and coffees was great but it wasn't enough to make up for this terrible experience.
I've honestly never had such an experience at a "nice" restaurant like this. I don't think we were being unreasonable letting them know about uncooked pasta politely but were met with attitude that was unwarranted. We will definitely not be coming back to this location. I really hope they are able to take these situations into account and work to make it a better experience for...
Read moreMy super sweet friends took me out for my birthday and ultimately let me decide on the restaurant. They would have never picked Sotto Sotto on their own, which I why I feel horrible that I picked this place to celebrate my birthday. I have dined at Sotto Sotto Yorkille plenty of times and have excellent dishes complimented by even better service - as it should be when you spend your hard earned money, make the effort to leave your home to enjoy a night out, and choose that specific establishment to spend your time.
My experience here at Sotto Sotto Oakville was completely unsettling. Our server, who's name I failed to get, was pleasant at first, but as the night went on she seemed more and more irritated by us asking for items that we should not have to continuously ask for like salt and oil. Her response was "I can only bring it if you ask, I am not allowed to bring it otherwise". How strange - I have never heard this. She also mentioned the special, which now after reading these reviews, seems to be the special everyday (fettuccine/white truffle), which was a $60 pasta dish, which was subpar in flavour.
We ordered a spaghetti carbonara, which was just not good plain and simple. I have eaten many carbonara dishes, even in Italy and this was just insultingly not good. It was also undercooked, not al dente. There is nothing fun about eating pasta when you can crunch into the hard parts. So as any normal paying customer would do, we brought it to the attention of the server who was so rude and took our concern very personally, took the plate of pasta and came back and said "the chef and the manager checked it and it is a perfect al dente". At this point, I felt so dismissed as a customer and asked for the manager to come out so I could explain to him how unacceptable this whole experience was. At first, he was also super defensive, but when I told him it was my birthday he did try to rectify the situation by complimenting us some dessert and coffee, which was very much appreciated. However, I will never dine with Sotto Sotto again. I am completely turned off of the brand and cleary the experiences I had in the past were just a thing of the past.
When it comes to dining out I am very big on where I spend my money or where I am taking my friends to have a good time. I think restaurant owners tend to forget that coming out and dining out is a big deal for people especially during times like this. I am also big on customer service - if you cannot staff people with good communication skills you shouldn't be in business. Not only did that server and partially the experience with the manager ruin my evening, I felt and still feel terrible my friends paid the bill. I honestly would have been more satisfied and happy having a Big Mac from McDonald's - at least I know what I am getting.
Absolutely disappointing and on top of that I still don't feel like they really understood what the issue was. Seems like a lazy attempt to charge $30+ for plates of pasta that we all know should be no more than $10. Not into businesses robbing people for shitty dishes.
Thanks,...
