Food was decent. But the service is HORRIBLE! Had an incident where we felt the chicken bulgogi was not cooked, we asked if we could switch it or cook it more- the kitchen refused and cut it up with scissors to prove it wasn’t raw. They also mentioned because he ate some of it, they can’t bring it back. They kept saying sorry but still weren’t listening to us or coming to a compromise as they placed the food back down. We let them know we’re not eating it. After the rest of the party finished eating their other dishes, we only ate the rice. Approached the cashier, asked if we needed to even pay for the dish because he only ate a bit of it. They called the owner over and the owner kept saying things like “you ate half” (which is NOT TRUE), she was insisting we did and kept looking over at our table. She then said “we can offer you 10% off”. She also said “we serve a lot of chicken bulgogis and never had a complaint”. It was a massive lack of responsibility on their part. It made us feel dismissed and insulted. He had a few bites, he shouldn’t be paying at all especially if he was not comfortable eating the rest. We eventually came to a conclusion and they discounted the dish but even paying $9 for a few bites is insane. Side dishes were tiny, gamjatang was salty. Stomach hurt after eating those few bites. We are so appalled by the customer service we’ve received. I work in customer service and I cannot BELIEVE how some people are getting away with treating their customers this way. I understand it’s a family restaurant and these are tough times but that’s no excuse to cut corners, skimp out and treat customers this way. Please reflect on why you wanted to get into this business if it isn’t to bring a warm friendly environment to provide authentic...
Read moreAfter watching Crash Landing on You on Netflix and feeling very envious about the scenes where they all enjoyed Korean Fried Chicken together, my friends and I knew we wanted to try it out for ourselves. While we could not make it to Seoul for the occasion (travel restrictions being the least of our worries), we got as close to it as we could: Gangnam Style in Kingston. While the dining room was unfortunately closed at the time due to you-know-what, we still had an amazing experience.
First off, the food is delicious. This was our second time eating at Gangnam Style. The first time we had a nice selection of menu items including Vegi Jeong (Korean Pancake), Korean Fried Chicken, Duk Bok Ki (rice cakes), and Beef Bulgogi -- it was all well-seasoned, well-spiced, and delicious! The Korean Fried Chicken especially left us wanting more. So that's what we did -- the Sweet and Spicy Seasoned Chicken and their special Honey Butter Seasoned Chicken were mouth-wateringly good, and best enjoyed with a generous helping of Korean MAX beer with Soju -- as authentic of an experience as you can get in Kingston.
Added bonus to all of this: the service is exceptional. The owners are friendly and generous, and seemed grateful for our business. We will definitely be back for the good food and the good vibes! Fingers crossed that the dining room opens soon.
Eat in or Take Out, you will not regret ordering from Gangnam Style in Kingston....
Read moreI am disappointed with my recent experiences at this restaurant. It appears that the restaurant no longer accommodates solo diners. On one occasion, I visited alone and was told by the server that there were no available tables, despite many being visibly unoccupied.
In addition, the level of service seems to vary depending on the gratuity provided. Guests who leave little or no tip reportedly do not receive side dishes, which creates an unfair and unwelcoming dining experience. Many of the servers are students, but it should not be the customer’s responsibility to subsidize their tuition through pressured tipping practices.
It is also worth noting that a mandatory 15% service charge is applied to groups of 10 or more. Furthermore, if some of the servers are international students, it raises questions about how they met the financial requirements of their study permit, which is intended to ensure that students can support themselves while studying abroad.
Overall, I cannot recommend this restaurant due to its discriminatory treatment of guests and questionable service practices.
(However, I still find the reasoning unclear: if the restaurant was busy, wouldn’t serving a larger group create even more work than serving a solo diner? This makes it difficult to understand why single diners would be turned away. I hope the restaurant can clarify this policy more...
