It is very unfortunate to have to change my review regarding this restaurant. Upon going multiple times recently, we were met with very unpleasant service by the owners. You have to self-serve yourself essentially (walking up and grabbing your own utensils, takeout boxes, etc.) because there was only one person working. Due to this, we were met with slow wait times and poor service. The owner later showed up and even then, two individuals running the front of the house is not enough for a full packed restaurant.
We ordered two dishes and it was an hour wait time before receiving it. Rather than being apologetic, the owner told us not to add anything to our original order (when we wanted to order more) because they were backed up. Although the food was good, the wait time and rude service is not worth it as there other other restaurants who are much kinder. They no longer value customers and treat them with the respect they deserve. It is very sad to see the server hired apologize for the long wait time and not the lady boss.
Another time, when we called hoping to reserve a table, the owners response was “we are very busy. Don’t come”. The owner then hung up on us and we were baffled at the response we had received. If they were busy, the owner could have provided us with a simple “sorry, we are currently very busy and do not have a table available for reservation. If you would like to still come, there may be a long wait time and hope you understand”. That would suffice, but instead she decided to provide us with such a response. I will no longer be a customer of such rude establishment and advise anyone who is still willing to be a patron to be weary of the long wait times and...
Read moreMy family and I used to come here all the time to eat as the food and service was excellent, but overtime, things have definitely gone downhill. The owner of the restaurant is rude and does not accept responsibility whatsoever.
There was a time when I asked for a specific dish, and when it came out, it was something completely different. When I told her, she insisted that I ordered it, and I was forced to eat a blandness tofu dish. How would I not know what I ordered when I come here often?
Also, when you try to customize items to your dish, she will tell you that it is not possible and that we should not complain and be picky about the food (she said this in person, so you can imagine my surprise when you want customers to enjoy the food and be a regular)
Beware that if you do not tip, she will call you out and insert a tip herself into the debit machine so make sure you check carefully. She provided poor service to my friend and my friend decided to tip 10% than 15% and immediately after checking the machine, she came back over and lectured us stating the exact words “You know in Canada, we have to tip at least 15% for service.” My friend was completely baffled that she expected a decent tip when we asked for a cup of ice and only received a cup with 1 ice cubes in it.
The food is no longer as good as it used to be as well. When they get busy, they rush the orders and you get a nasty, flavourless meal for $20. You can go to other restaurants where they provide excellent service and food.
Trust me, take your business elsewhere. They do not want your business with this service and...
Read moreOff the bat: best chop suey out there.
I LOVE chop suey. And no, I'm not talking authenticity here just for clarification. I'm talking about good quality meat, big pieces of celery/add-in veggies and the tasty sauce. Bean sprouts are pretty much always good, that's a given.
The taste was perfect. The sauce was actually noticeable, which I find so rare in chop suey these days. Will be going here just to order family-sized chop suey in the near future, I'm sure.
Alright, that aside. We went in for take out on a slow Monday night around 9 p.m. Since many Chinese restaurants are closed Monday, this was a big win already. I got chicken balls, chop suey, rice and egg roll in the combo for one deal.
The service was fast (seven minutes) and we went home with our order in a well-packed bag and calendar included (so cute...and has the menu printed on it which makes me laugh a lot and also more likely to order Chinese). What stands out to me about this place was the meat. I typically never eat the meat that comes in dishes because I've had my fair share of cartilage and other nastiness. Not here!! So good!
I know I have a very arbitrary way of ranking things but between good meat and chop suey and good service, I'm sold on this place. Will be returning soon!! Hopefully the awkward location (good parking!! Just kind of in a "lull" area on University) will not keep...
