My husband, myself, our adult daughter and our 9 month grandson went for dinner February 5/ 22. On arrival we were greeted rather coolly by the Host. He appeared less than impressed to see an infant there. We were seated in a front room separate from the rest of the dining room. I asked if they had a high chair. He responded ‘ we have one, I will try to dig it out’. I actually found his comment offensive, but left it alone. From there we ordered an appetizer, and while looking over the menu we realized that pita bread was not included with any meal, but rather had to be ordered separately. This is the first time I have EVER seen pita bread not offered as a complimentary side. We ended up ordering pita and tzatziki as another appetizer. My husband ordered chicken souvlaki with “Greek” fries and a Caesar salad. The salad was the best part of his meal. My daughter ordered dry ribs and a Greek salad. I ordered shrimp & scallop souvlaki with a Greek salad. Salad came prior to the meal. We have NEVER seen a sadder “Greek” salad. They consisted of iceberg lettuce topped with a tomato, a few pieces of red onion, a light sprinkling of feta and a token Kalamata olive and whatever dressing was on it was watered down by the amount of moisture on the iceberg lettuce. A true Greek salad, in our experience is green pepper, tomato, red onion chunks of feta in a creamy dressing and token olive, at the very least, and NO lettuce of any sort. When our meals arrived, my daughter found her ribs to be extremely salty. She commented that she likes salty food, but that was even too much for her, it was overpowering. She sent it back to the kitchen with our server, who was very apologetic, and did his best to accommodate. She ended up ordering a beef souvlaki, as it would take less time to make than ribs. My meal was fine, nothing to rave about though. Service was okay, food was a real disappointment. A ‘discount’ was applied for the terrible ribs, but we still had to pay for a portion of that meal, through no fault of ours. We had purposely chosen Greko’s Restaurant & Steak House over a ‘chain type’ Greek restaurant as we had hoped for better quality. We might as well have gone to ‘Opas’. As for isolating the 9 month old infant, he was extremely well behaved! We will...
Read moreGirlfriend was wanting some Greek food so we went to Grekos on the recommendation of a very good friend who is a greek cook himself.
As soon as we entered the host was there immediately to show us to our table. We were given water and menus and had our drink orders taken. We ended up waiting a solid 15 minutes for our drinks (2 cokes) at which point we also both ordered a souvlaki platter for one.
We waited only a short while for our salads which unfortunately were very soggy and seemed to have been sitting in their dressing for a while. The salad tasted good however so we ate it with out complaints.
We then waited about 20-25 minutes for our souvlaki, throughout this time I was able to see a cook come out and look at the dining room multiple times. I also noticed that the microwave on the shelf in the kitchen was used quiet a bit. At about the 15 minute mark of waiting for our food we had a lady who wasn’t our server bring us a container of water to top off our glasses. We noticed at this point as well that every table except for our was given bread, something that wasn’t important however we were confused as to why others got it and not us, we just put it towards ordering the wrong items.
Once our food came, we both found it very delicious however there were some points that made me question the quality. First of all, the veggies that came with the meal were inconsistent in that the zucchini was cooked right but the carrots were undercooked. The lemon potato’s had absolutely no issues with them, however the Greek fries were inconsistent with seasoning and some were very greasy. Lastly the souvlaki, the beef skewers were very good and seasoned correctly, however the other skewers weren’t as good. The chicken skewer was very bland and I found myself going for lemon and tzatziki immediately just to give it a nicer taste. The pork skewers unfortunately had quiet a bit of fat on the pieces. Lastly the shrimp and scallop skewer was again very much under flavoured as the taste of the scallops was all I could taste.
Overall, I feel like the cost of the meal didn’t make up for the mistakes with the food, probably won’t return again unless we go with...
Read moreWe have been dining at Grekos for over twenty years and never had a bad experience, that is, until recently. I frequently order salmon souvlaki as it it has been consistently excellent with large chunks of pinkish colored and mouth watering salmon. This time there was no pink coloring, just grey and it tasted bloody awful. My partner tasted and confirmed that it was bad. In addition, the usually tasty greek fries were over cooked and not very appealing. The entire meal was a write off. The waiter offered to bring something else. The next dish was fine but it did require an additional wait. So, my partner ate while I watched and then she watched while I ate 15 minutes later. The dining experience was less than ideal. I would not be writing this critical review at all except for the fact we were recently informed by friends that they had a family gathering at Grekos and their $400 dining experience was not good either. No need to get into details but it was very disappointing for these long time customers to get under cooked and bad tasting dishes. It would seem that my poor dining experience was not an isolated occurrence. Something is amiss at this once excellent dining establishment. It would be a shame to see one of Regina's premiere dining establishments squander decades worth of reputation by allowing sloppiness to take root in the kitchen. Management needs to take heed of problems and be careful not to be dismissive of customer concerns with insincere platitudes. After so many years of providing quality meals and service, Grekos deserves another opportunity to get it right. and I will re-visit sometime in the future. Hopefully, the next review will be...
