I wish there was a zero option for rating as this place deserves less than one star we went there for our family Day weekend and we’re extremely disappointed with the service we received. We were last there in the summertime and absolutely loved this place and was treated with the upmost respect and patience. However, this time it was completely the opposite our server was so rude she would not serve my partner a pitcher and when we asked why, she assumed that he was drinking it to himself and asked me if I would be drinking any and then I said I was not sure, so she declined his request and offered him a pint instead, we then ask for crayons and paper for the children as we had brought our two toddlers, she declined that as well however, in the summertime we came we were brought a big tray of colours and paper for the kids to colour while they waited their food. Also, when We arrived we were sitting at the table for over 10 minutes and no one offered us even a cup of water or attended to us until I flagged down one of the waitresses. The waitress, then proceeded to speak to her fellow coworker, and badmouth us behind our backs and stare at us as we placed our order we felt totally disrespected and this was a very shameful time because we went there under the impression that we would be welcomed Instead we felt like we were the odd ones out. we were the only coloured couple in the restaurant and we felt a lot racism and prejudice from the looks of discussed, we got from other patrons as well as all of your stuff at your establishment. We have proof of this unacceptable behavior, and we will definitely never be returning there again, or supporting this community business for nothing more than a heartache. This servers name was Alyssa and she was extremely rude . The food we would rate dissatisfied. 2/10 , for the reason being the cod was a mess , it was under cooked and the batter just fell off the fish. With that being said , the attitude of the server Alyssa just ruined the whole experience.

The food prices lean touristy, but the wine list? Surprisingly down-to-earth. We ordered a bottle of Sumac Ridge Gewürztraminer and were pleasantly shocked by how community-friendly the pricing was. The menu is an interesting mix—burgers and fish and chips on one side, and authentic Thai dishes on the other. Turns out, the original owner was a Thai woman, and the new owner (who came on board right before COVID) decided to keep the Thai section instead of going fully western. Smart move, especially in a neighbourhood already filled with seafood and Japanese spots. Our server was super friendly and patient, even with our indecisive ordering. Here’s what we had: • Chowder soup (cup) Somewhere between New England and Manhattan, this chowder was creamy and tomatoey but not quite enough of either to stand out. Confused but edible. • Thai spicy clams Solid dish. Flavourful, nicely balanced, and the broth made us want to grab a spoon. • Prawn pad Thai Definitely on the sweet and acidic side, no real wok aroma or char. Meh… it lacked the depth that makes a great pad Thai memorable. • Fisherman’s pot Tasted like a proper $40 seafood pot without the fancy markup. Lots of variety, rich broth, approachable and well portioned. • Sumac Ridge Gewürztraminer (bottle) Refreshing, light, buttery and did not break the bank. A great pairing for seafood. ⸻ Overall, Shady Island offers a curious blend of east meets west in a laid-back waterfront setting. Great service, reasonable wine, and food that mostly hits the mark.

There is health and hygienic concerns with how they run this restaurant. Richmond health board was notified & investigated. My overall experience on Sunday July 27, 2014.

1/ Firstly, hair on my small plate. Very unappetizing but took my napkin and wiped it off and thought it was no big deal.

2/ Food choices were very limited and fast food quality, very pricey, and very greasy. I guess u pay for the view here & not the food. My boyfriend bought the seafood chowder advertised according themselves as "the best in town" didn't notice any seafood in it. Waiter will ask if u want $3 bread with your soup because the soup is barely enough to fill you up. Small portion that leaves u hungry still: "large size" $10 bowl is just a bowl. It still looks very small because small is a one cup size for $7. These portions are measly and not enough to fill you unless u order french fries with your meal. More grease. Gross. Yay!!!

3/ I ordered a $20 Caesar salad on the menu that included some seafood. Upon arrival I took 2 bites and there was another brown arm hair? in the salad!!! I was really turned off by the experience. Just lost my appetite altogether and returned the dish immediately. Informed the manager as well. This was suppose to be a treat and ruined our nice day bike riding.

4/ Expect substandard service. despite the bad food & service it's packed on a sunny day all the time because people want the view. The waiter forgot about us. Food took 30 minutes to come out for pre made microwaved soup. 45 minutes for salad because all they want is for u to order drinks when I don't drink. I will not return for the poor service alone.

5/ Most importantly, I just don't trust that this restaurant is being run safely & properly. Too much competition at these fish & chips places everywhere quality control and management is not there. They only care about volume of customers who are mostly tourist. The carpets upstairs @ this restaurant is utterly dirty, filthy with grease stains and smelled like wet mouldy carpet. Please go upstairs behind bar & take a look and you will know what I mean by the smell of wet, mouldy carpet. I was turned off going to the bathroom and didn't even use it. According to the cleaning chart on door July 18 was the last time anyone cleaned it was July 27th. Almost 10 days of no staff attention to washroom of any sort. I find this disgusting and unacceptable for an establishment and u wonder what practice is happening in the kitchen?

Definitely will never return again. Spend you money where you will treated with some respect. Where u get value for your hard earned money. This is not the place. The joke I made at the end was the ice water was pretty good there at least. Definitely is "shady" at many levels & something is seriously fundamentally...

I suppose any restaurant can be good or bad on any given day. It's also true that you're more likely to see a review when someone thinks a place is bad than when it is good, so let me buck the trend and tell you what a wonderful dinner we had at Shady Island. It was our first time to the area and I had, through online searching, decided to go to the Blue Canoe next door, but after looking at their menu we opted to try Shady Island. Their menu is not terribly large and they specialize in fish (of all kinds) and chips, which neither of us wanted, but there were several items that did catch out attention. The host inquired of some availability of halibut for us and the manager came over and let us know exactly what they were able to do for us non-fried-foods types, after which we decided to stay. We were seated in a great window seat overlooking Fisherman's Wharf and served by a waitress from Thailand who was one of the most friendly and helpful that I've experienced anywhere in a long time. She recommended the garlic prawns appetizer over the crab cakes and the choice proved to be fabulous. My wife had a warm seafood salad that opened her eyes in tasty disbelief, and I had the roasted salmon in a honey teriyaki sauce, cooked to absolute perfection. Admittedly, as the crowds filled the place up service slowed some. Our poor waitress seemed to be trying to handle the whole place, but she really did an admirable job. On our way out we stopped to get a couple business cards and though we ended up taking the last one they had available at the time, the waitress actually came out of the restaurant to catch us with a blank receipt with the name and address of the place on it, above and beyond what she needed to do. The price of the meal was not out of the normal range for a restaurant of its type. Bear in mind that some of these other reviewers may well have had bad experiences here, but ours was superb. We would go back again...
