We were visiting some friends in Surrey, and I recommended we visit Lahori Restaurant as I like the food from that city/region. The reviewes seemed fine…
We arrived around 7:45 pm, and were not warmly greeted. Instead, we were immediately asked by this impolite waitress if we made reservations. We said “no”, but when we looked around the restaurant it was half full. My friend immediately said they must be closing soon. The same waitress took us to a table which was tucked away in the corner and difficult to access from the bench side. I literally had to squeeze in between this buffet table and our table. Once we sat down, we were asked again by another waitress if we made reservations. We said no. Then we were handed two menus for multiple people. I noted one menu had samosa and channa all over the inside page. A faux pas in the restaurant business. I didn’t want my guests to see this, so I decided to keep it to myself. The first waitress came by again and rudely asked us if we made reservations. At that point I was ready to leave; but being the polite person I am, I said no. And then she proceeded to ask if we are ready to order. We literally had two minutes to look at the menu!
On to the food; the samosa/channa dish was good. The fish pakoras and naan were fine. The biryani was not the best, seemed reheated, and was simply too over spiced (I’ve eaten biryani my entire life, I’m especially fond of the Hyderabadi style, but have also had Pakistani variations. Biryani should never be over spiced). I also didn’t see any saffron in the rice. It was one orangish color and seemed like the rice had been mixed with the meat base and then topped with onions and cilantro).
The meal was overpriced for the quality of the food, but the portions were decent size. My main issues were the poor customer service and the general cleanliness. Aside from the menu, the bathroom was not clean whatsoever; there was water all over the floor and cleaning supplies on the bathroom sink and floor. More importantly, if your restaurant is closing, then let the customers know so they can make a decision whether to eat at your establishment or not. We weren’t even asked if we wanted chai or dessert after spending over $100 and still leaving a tip! Rather we were rushed to finish our meal, and then asked if we could box up the food. As I was paying the bill and providing a tip, the lights were shut off despite all of us being inside. That’s unacceptable and no way to treat your restaurant guests.
Very disappointed and will not...
Read moreI would give this place a 0 star if I could. Terrible customer service. The food was good. But everything else was terrible. When our food first arrived, we had to ask for plates to eat in. We also had to keep asking for utensils. Not sure whether customers usually just dig in from the serving plates and eat with their hands? The waiters were surprised we asked for these basic things. At 9:30 pm on Saturday, we were told to leave. The waitress said, "we are closing". We asked her "are you asking us to leave" while we were eating dessert that had just arrived at our table. We were aware that their closing time was 10 pm, and were happy to be out of there by then, but didn't expect to literally be kicked out half an hour before that. She responded with "well I don't want to say it but ya" and began laughing and walked away. We tried to stuff ourselves with the dessert that had just arrived to try and hurry up so we could leave. She brought the machine for us to pay right away and shoved her hand right in front of my face to pass it to the person sitting next to me. And then breathed in my face (disgusting). We quickly paid and left, feeling disgusted and disappointed with our experience here. As we got up and began putting our coats on, they brought their broom and cleaning supplies to begin cleaning our table. The broom brushed against my friend's leg (gross). We understand that they dislike their place of work, but please have some human decency to give people some personal space, and treat people with kindness. Sadly we will not be returning, despite enjoying the taste of the food.
I would also like to add that there was no itemized receipt presented to us before paying. So we could not even check that they charged us correctly. The waitress just punched in a number on the machine and handed it to us to pay. We were too stunned to say anything and just accepted and paid. (Is...
