I’m writing a similar negative review that I’ve seen before from other people.
I’ve been a loyal customer going to Foxley regularly since it move from College to Ossington. 15+ yrs ago. I have introduced it to friends and recommended it to many others.
Last night was my last meal there.
Ever since Tom’s wife started working there the level of good and friendly service has all but disappeared. She is sour and really isn’t cut out to be a server.
We ordered dishes that we’ve ordered many times in the past and one in particular was really off. The beef cheeks in curry should be super tender, and this time it was chewy and full distasteful connective tissue. We disliked it and left most of the dish.
When table was being cleared, we informed the server/owner that it wasn’t good. She said that someone else ate it, implying that it must be good (not necessarily) and then the other owner Tom Tasted it and said it’s the same as always which (sadly) was exactly what I knew he would say. It certainly wasn’t. Over the many years I’ve. Visited Foxley, I have never once had enough of an issue with a dish to request it being taken off the bill.
They should have removed it from the bill without giving it any thought to it, but they didn’t. Normally I would let it slide and just not go back; however, I couldn’t let it pass, because of my long history with this restaurant, so asked that they remove it. Simple request that I thought would be handled better than it was.
I pointed out that Is been a very long-time customer and asked if this the way you think you should be handling this situation. Lose a customer who has brought a lot of business to the restaurant over a dish that wasn’t good and may have a food cost of around $5.00.
They finally removed it very very reluctantly,
I decided that it would be that last time I’ll ever go to Foxley.
It’s a cool little neighbourhood spot, but there’s so many more options available today in TO with better food better, customer service, and better vibe.
On top of that, the food really isn’t as good as it once was. They are just ‘dialling it in’...
Read moreHad a really underwhelming dinner here, especially considering that I had only heard great things. Overall this restaurant just seemed tired and dated: the food, service, and decor.
the fusion concept didn't really work and I didn't enjoy trying to eat salad off a plate with mismatched chopsticks. (I love eating with chopsticks and use them every day, but even I have limits.) Some portions were very generous, like the blue crab salad special, while some were really stingy (only two ribs in a $20 portion of pork side ribs - those cost like $5/lb!!!). Also if you only have two desserts on your menu, you probably should try to make sure you don't run out of one of them partway through the night.
The decor looked really dated - especially going downstairs to the washrooms. And there was no material to absorb the sound bouncing off the hard surfaces - so it was really unpleasantly loud when a large group came and sat down not too far away from us.
And the service left a lot to be desired. No nice welcome when we entered, no explanation of the menu, and no one even came to check in on us once they cleared our plates.
Two service things bothered me especially: when one server brought over our crab salad, they said "sorry it kinda fell over on the way over." like why didn't you go back in the kitchen and fix it so we would still get a nice presentation??!! And when we finally got the bill, the server who brought over the machine tried telling my mom to tap her card when the total was above the tap limit (which my husband and I both knew well from past experiences). How does someone working in a restaurant with prices this high not know what the common limit is for tap??!! That interjection of course derailed my mom's attempt to pay and it took us extra time to get her through it.
Maybe this place was great twenty years ago, but it...
Read moreI recently visited Foxley and had a terrible experience. The waiter of the restaurant seems to have no appreciation for their customers. My group of 6 was forced to pay a $50 minimum per cover along with an 18% gratuity, which I found to be unreasonable and excessive considering the already exorbitant prices. The waiter then informed us they were extremely reluctant to seat groups, even though the website explicitly stated no reservations (to our dismay). This flawed logic leaves me baffled. This was coupled with a two hour seating limit, which the waiter cited was to allow seats for others despite a nearly empty restaurant. Although this limit is palpable, it left an extremely bad taste in my mouth. It is shocking how paying customers are treated like this at a restaurant that appears this upscale. I would not recommend Foxley to anyone and will not be returning in the future.
EDIT: The waiter recently responded to this review with a significant amount of misleading responses. I would like to note that the waiter required our groups to abide by the (unwritten) $50 minimum order per person even after we clearly stated that we did not want to be treated as one group. Considering the prices of the dish in comparison to the portion size, I struggle to believe they would take a loss if a customer ordered less than the stated minimum unless they are importing products from across the world. I find it even more baffling that the waiter completely ruined our experience in the name of "staying in business", thereby losing 6 customers who would've likely spent around $50 per person regardless. It is extremely unfortunate that the front of house treats their customers so badly, as I heard good things about the...
