Came here after a recommendation. I've always walked by it, but was never interested in it. Years ago, it used to be a seafood restaurant that my family and I frequented. Following a shooting, it shut down and was taken over by an OK ayce sushi place, and business always appeared slow. Since then, I haven't seen such a busy restaurant on a weekday as last night. We were seated close to the staircase that leads to the bathroom, but later moved closer to the window/entrance because there was a a slight stench of bathroom, kinda reminiscent of a restaurant that cooks stinky tofu.
Between the three of us, we ordered: ramen with beef, stir fried cut noodle with lamb, lamb skewers (2), squid skewer (1), sliced beef in pancake, and a lotus root salad. Service was quick. The ramen soup broth was delicious, beef was tender and flaked off in your mouth. However, I wished there was more veggies, like Bok choy or something. I'm not a fan of lamb, but the lamb was very good! My only complaint about the skewers is that sometimes when you bit into it, it was like eating a layer of spice. The skewers were smothered in spices, and it wasn't consistently smothered. The sliced beef in pancake was my favourite! The lotus rood salad was also good, but garlicy.
Overall, it was a very good experience and very affordable. However, you may end up with garlic breath for the rest of your night. Enough to legit ward off dozens of vampires.
Bonus - You know how in the news, clowns have been terrorizing cities across the world. After we paid, the tip was left on the tray on the table. We continued talking until we felt someone breathing on our shoulder and said "excuse me". We screamed, and there was a female peddler with makeup applied improperly all over the face. The restaurant stated that it was the first time it had happened. I guess we were...
Read moreLike other reviewers have said, the handmade noodles are solid and it's fun watching them whip, twirl and pull the noodles in plain sight. You also get a very good portion size for the price that you pay. Overall taste, however, was pretty average.
Beef noodle - the better of the two that we ordered. Good portion of beef and tasty soup. But it was advertised with one chilli and was not spicy at all so that was pretty disappointing.
Hand pulled noodle with pork - was disappointed as soon as it arrived. First of all, for a noodle with pork, there was very little pork. Whatever pork there was was chopped up into tiny cubes and most of it was fat. There was way more cubed vegetables like carrots and potatoes than pork. Second, this noodle was advertised with two chillis and was not spicy at all! The soup was average - tasted like a meat and vegetable stew (more vegetable than meat).
Beef tendon in chilli oil - Again, not very spicy despite sitting in a bowl of chilli oil. Tendon was nice though so I ate plenty of this.
Lamb/chicken gizzard skewers - Seemed like it was precooked and heated up; meat was warm but dry when it came. There was cumin powder on top but because the meat wasn't moist at all, the cumin just sat on top of the meat and you could feel the dry powder in your mouth. I have had this same dish in China and this was terrible in comparison. Not 'authentic' at all.
The "novelty" of the hand-pulled noodle quickly wore off and overall, the meal was pretty disappointingly average. Having lived in Asia for the past 5 years, this place doesn't cut it. Won't be adding this to...
Read moreGosh, I love these noodles..handmade at the restaurant, the noodles are al dente with a great chew and mouth feel. Featured in the pics is their standard regular but since my first trip, I've become obsessed with their extra wide noodles. Different options for noodle width at no cost.
Located at the heart of Spadina Chinatown, near the intersection of Spadina and Dundas, this noodle place on the main floor is a gem. You can order off your phone using the QR code on the table or with the staff.
Note: we tried the beef noodle soup dishes which are delicious. It's hot, savory, and the pickled daikon takes it to the next level in flavor. I personally find it less salty than some of the other places I've been to. We ordered the non spicy version and you can omit any the toppings you're not into like the cilantro or onions or spice in my case.
The onion pancake is crispy and crunchy. We really liked it, savory, oniony, but some might find it a bit different than the usual version that is pan fried and flaky.
The staff are polite and professional and helped us to figure out how to order so feel free to ask for assistance if you need it.
A quick note - they do other dishes as well like rice and noodle dishes and bbq skewers but can't comment since I have yet to try them.
Lastly, if it helps, the bathroom is located downstairs and is clean. No issues using it.
So, if you're in the area, even on a hot day, go grab yourself a hot bowl of noodles! That's what...
