I haven’t been to this establishment since it was Furama and been wanting to try for awhile. I walked in here late afternoon to pick up several items, only to find out that they accept cash only, even though there are NO signs anywhere to tell you this. I asked if there was an issue with the machine, but the guy said no they always only accepted cash. No apologies for the inconvenience, nothing. I didn’t have any cash on me so instead of abandoning my items, I walked across the street, paid the $3.50 transaction fee to get cash, and came bank to the bakery to settle my items. The person had already bagged my items and just handed me my goods. No “Thank you”, or anything, he said nothing. Rude. I went on to have dinner up the street, only to find out afterwards that this person had shoved everything in one bag and as a consequence, squished all my buns and rice balls. My 4 pineapple buns were indistinguishable as the crusted tops had all crumbled and fell out their little unsealed plastic sandwich bags. All my puff pastries were bent out of shape. The only thing that was intact was my 2 sticky rice, but because it was in a small box. This was disgusting and made everything so unappetizing. I threw most of it away. I’m extremely disappointed at this level of service and find this entire experience so unacceptable. I will never shop here again. It was my first...
Read moreGood selection, and large buns for the money. We order from them often at work and have been enjoying it for some time. I've decided to pop in during a recent trip to Chinatown and changed my mind completely. First of all, they only take cash, which is not only inconvenient and odd in 2022, but hardly an annoyance compared to what I saw next. The blatant disregard for hygiene is appaling even by fast food standards. I am especially baffled as surrounding businesses are still struggling from the pandemic. The trays are filthy and coated in oil and stains from previous use. Not one, or two or a few...ALL of them stacked about 15 inches tall. I figured maybe I'll skip the nasty stuff and reach for a tong and use a baggie intead. Turns out the tongs are just as disgusting and visually show fingerprints of the last 10 customers. On my way out, I notice an employee grab a tray from a customer that just just cashed out. She threw it on top of another stack and brought it up front for customers to use. Im no stranger to Chinatown and often stumble across some sketchy (or non existent) hygenic practices but this tops it. Very...
Read moreIf you wanted a quickie as in a cake or pastry with a delicious coffee in the heart of Chinatown you would drop by the Furama Bakery. I can tell you this because I had been visiting Furama since the early 90s and was never disappointed with their selection and quality of eats. I don't care what anyone says but as far as I am concerned, Furama made the best damn curry beef buns and puffs!
With the closing of the beloved Furama Bakery after 30 years of excellent baked goods at 248 Spadina Ave, this new bakery does not quite live up to its standards. The one thing that was consistent with Furama was the freshness of their baked goods. It is not so with the Hong Kong Island Dim Sum House. I experienced this disappointment a second time after picking up some pastries including the curry beef buns and they were quite stale. At $2.50 per puff, you expect a freshly-baked pastry.
To be fair, this restaurant offers a wide selection of other items as well but I have not had the opportunity to try them out. As yet. Which remains to be seen, should I want to go back to the Hong Kong Island Dim Sum...
