We were in the area from NY, my husband saw it has over 4.5 stars thought it has good food. Clearly 5star reviews posted by non Afghans or family/friends of the owner because the food was nothing like afghani. We ordered mantu, bolani, chicken kebab plate , shish kebab plate and French fries. The only thing was little close to authentic French fries. Mantu was uncooked, so was bolani ( very small for the price ).Chicken, beef and rice didn’t have salt, seasonings at all. Chicken was hard and dry so was beef( they cooked it on the pan instead of grill as it should be).At then end she brought the bread, after we were done and disappointed with horrible food. I hoped maybe bread would be little better but it was even worse . Usually bread dough has yeast, when you keep dough for too long ( I’m talking about over a week) bread tastes bitter ( in Farsi we say talgh). All the employees were Spanish so I’m not surprised they were serving food that doesn’t taste 1% like Afghani. I asked the employee to speak to the manager, she said he is gone and won’t answer his phone. When people pay with real money, at least serve them real food. Save your money, time and mood go somewhere else. I posted picture of our food, you can tell uncooked mantu and bread, nothing like “perfect pictures “ we saw on reviews We were hungry had to eat at least salad. Empty place, not surprised why nobody dines in . Horrible food, worse...
Read moreMazadar is the new Afghani grill in the Leslieville/Beaches area. It’s still in soft-opening mode, so the atmosphere was a bit quiet, but the food and service were amazing. They welcomed us with complimentary bread made in-house, which was oh so good… a great way to start. We ordered the fish bites, as a shared appetizer, and they were perfectly crispy outside and tender inside—lovely. I had the lamb chop plate, which came with spice-infused rice, and garden salad—the chops themselves were grilled beautifully, with a crispy crust outside and soft and juicy interior. Our server was attentive and came by often to check up on us and make sure we didn’t need any more bread or anything else.
As we were finishing, the owner, Farid, came by to say hello and to chat for a bit. He told us about his background, that he’d grown up in the neighbourhood, and about his passion for food—you could tell this right away. He brought a plate of Afghani-style eggplant grilled, then sautéed, and finished with tomato sauce and yogurt—it tasted incredibly.
Farid came by later and offered us some tea and baklava. It was a really nice way to end our first visit to Mazadar. It won’t...
