I visited Paris Texas for the second time, on November 15th, and had a very disappointing experience. My first visit back in June was great—I was with a diverse group of people, including those visibly older than me and with people of different races (white included), and the service was excellent. However, this recent visit felt entirely different. I was with a friend, and we are both people of colour. When we arrived, we waited at the bar for about five minutes before we could get the bartender’s attention. When I asked for the barcode to view the drink menu, he told us they were no longer serving cocktails, even though it was only 11:30 PM. I found this odd, as I could see others walking around with cocktails. Not wanting to doubt him or cause a scene, I accepted it and ordered two vodka cranberries instead. What followed was even more disappointing. The bartender handed us our bill immediately after serving the drinks, without asking if we wanted to start a tab. He seemed to be rushing us out, and it was hard to ignore how differently he was treating us compared to other groups, particularly those consisting of white people. The vodka cranberry was nothing more than vodka with cranberry juice from the tap—hardly something that justified tipping for the lack of effort and service we experienced. However, when we decided not to tip, the bartender confronted us, saying, “Nuh uh, you can’t do that,” and shook his head repeatedly. Feeling uncomfortable and not wanting to cause a scene, we gave a tip, even though we didn’t feel it was earned. I left feeling extremely disappointed and upset.
