Review for Wok & Roast is based on in-person purchase directly at the restaurant.

It looks like this place has mixed reviews so I can only share my opinion based on in-person purchasing for take out. If you like the Chinese bbq boxed meals, then Wok & Roast is a great option. Located at the heart of the Broadview Gerrard Chinatown, Wok & Roast has been around forever (it sure seems that way). Featured in the images are their boxed bbq meals (2 item with bbq pork and roast pork; bbq pork only) and come with garlic broccoli included. You will also be asked if you want sauce on your rice (we always say yes).

The BBQ pork is always flavourful, not too salty with a touch of sweetness. The roasted pork consistently has crispy skin and again, flavourful without being too salty and has an essence of 5 spice powder. Now, depending on which section of pork you get, you may get fattier or leaner cuts. Be sure to identify what you want to the staff so they can get you what you want. You can ask for leaner or fattier. We opt for the leaner cuts. Just keep in mind, lean doesn't mean completely free of fat. Boxed bbq meals come in small or large. I find both very generous.

Another thing we like to pick up at Wok & Roast is their fried chicken wings. Get a large box for around $10 and it's generous. Flavour isn't too salty with a hint of 5 spice. Some might find bland but for me, it does the trick and doesn't seem too oily which I like.

If you're not into boxed bbq meals, they also have rice and noodle dishes along with other Chinese dishes that come straight from the kitchen. You can eat in, take out, or do delivery. Can't comment too much on these but like I said, if you want a generous bbq boxed meal, you can certainly give these a try. They are our go-to place for bbq when we're...

I do not recommend this restaurant! And if you buy roast pig here - make sure you open the containers before you leave the restaurant and check to see if you got what you chose because these people here are cheaters. Apparently people in the neighborhood knows about this and avoid this place. I now know and will never come back again. I rather go next door to the other BBQ house who are much more honest people. This is the 3rd time I buy roast pork at this restaurant and they cheated me by secretly trading the meat I chose from the pig for extra pieces of “fat” that they had saved on the side. They have a piece of white plywood covering the cutting board so I (being 5’2”) couldn’t see what they secretly put under the takeout containers while they chop the roast pork. For example, today I chose a piece on the roast pig that had ribs and no fat but when I took the two takeout containers home, more than half of both containers had more than half with just pieces of fat (the pieces looked they they were taken near the shoulder/butt) and very few rib bones. Today, I paid more than $50 for the meat and they did that! Very disappointing as I grew up in the neighborhood and used to come here all the time. I was thinking of taking the containers back to show them but decided not to as they will mostly denied...

Prices were reasonable at Wok & Roast Chinese BBQ restaurant. A 3-meat plate with rice + tip was $20.

I got the soy chicken, the duck and the crispy pork. The crispy pork was definitely a highlight, as was the ginger scallion dip. The soy chicken and duck were both tasty and moist although the duck was littered with bone - it was a bit messy. I will say the food was quite delicious. While the temperature of the crispy pork was warm, the duck and chicken were actually quite cold - I don't mean room temp, I mean cold like it was pulled from the refrigerator and the outside was warmed up quickly but not the inside.

About my waiter; what can I say. He didn't say hi, he didn't say thanks, when I said thanks twice he didn't acknowledge me. And then was watching his phone the entire meal. I just had to go to the counter and pay and when he saw me he came over and kept watching his phone. I don't really expect more, but I'm still tipping so at least give me something.

I'd come back for a 1.lb plate of pork that's for certain....

Update: just 2.5hrs later and it's rough - I have not been feeling good at all and I have an iron stomach, but something here is not...

Came here in two different occasions and tried the bbq and congee/fried dough. Both times disappointed by the taste of the food. It's way way way too salty. In comparison with other congee places (e.g.House of Gourmet and Goldstone) this restaurant really has a lot to improve on. The congee watered within minutes of arriving at the table. Good congee will hold its soft, homogenous congealed state if well made. There is not have if worse than. Eating a bite and feeling like I'm drinking hot salty water with bits in it. And did I mention it was completely overseasoned? And weirdly..Had a bit of soapy taste..Like when dishes didn't rinse properly. Their dough stick was extra greasy..Looks like its been around a few days and overfried again before service. The bbq is overseasoned you can hardly taste the sauce over the salt. You can get good Chinese BBQ next store at a mom/pop shop for cheaper and better. Price is comparable for congee at $5. Service e is very friendly. Not sure if I'll come here again..Although I think it's the only place that serves congee on the east end...
