STAY AWAY. This was always a must-stop for our summer trips to PEI, so we eagerly made the trip out to Kensington after not having been here for a few years. We got a variety of baked goods and with the exception of the gingerbread square cookies the rest ranged from mediocre (scones and cinnamon rolls) to literally throwing it in the trash because it was terrible (strawberry rhubarb pie). Turns out that the Mary’s of old that comprised the overwhelming majority of the 5* reviews on here no longer exists—the place has been under new ownership for the last year and a half and the reviews absolutely reflect the nosedive in quality. For example, the strawberry rhubarb pie was small, flat (maybe about a half inch tall), the crust was heavy and difficult to cut, then somehow simultaneously chewy and hard when eating it. We all ate our pieces by hand because you could not eat it with a fork because it wouldn’t cut. The filling neither tasted like strawberries, nor rhubarb, but more like date-square filling that took a wrong turn somewhere. Just awful. The cinnamon rolls used to be delicious—big, fluffy, and the perfect cinnamon-sugar balance. Now? Small, heavy, barely any cinnamon flavour, and it’s clearly missing some fat like a butter that is needed for good balance. The scones were dry and flavourless.
So, do yourself a favour if you are wanting your nostalgic Mary’s fix and just don’t. Don’t waste your hard-earned money or time on coming here looking to buy what obviously no longer exists despite claims that the same recipes are being used or training happened. It is absolutely not the same and the majority of the reviews in the past year are backing this up. I wish I had thought to look at reviews before we went, but we never considered that this local institution would change hands. We absolutely will not be back, particularly when Willow’s up the road was an amazing new find and we enjoyed everything we got from there to the point of making a...
Read moreOn our annual visit to PEI our friends and us have always looked forward to a 1st and last night supper meal of Mary's Bakery Chicken, garlic cheese bread and cinnamon buns. We expected price increases of course but WOW they beyond skyrocketed. That would have been a shock but ok for a 2 time treat. However, the quality and quantity we expected was definitely not there. Chicken was no where near as tasty and coating wasn't same at all. Bread was almost 1/2 the regular size and no where near as as cheesy/tasty. And cinnamon buns were very dry without nearly as much cinnamon sugar mixture. Warming in microwave didn't even help. We were told by friends after the business is under new ownership. Either the new owners didn't bother to buy the recipes or choose not to follow them to try and cut corners. And did they ever cut corners. So very disappointed. You can't just buy a business name and location and expect people to keep coming if the food quality isn't there ... that's what drew people and made such loyal customers. All 4 of us felt the same about the meal we had all looked so forward to enjoying. Beyond disappointed and sending a warning to others ... don't spend what we did ... it's throwing away money yes but also what had been a great...
Read moreMary's Bake Shop in Kensington, PEI is perhaps not the fanciest or the most creative & artistic bakery but for a simple bakery they have the best Cinnamon Rolls, breads, fried chicken and potato wedges you can find anywhere.
On our stay on the island we stopped at Mary's for some cinnamon rolls and we got hooked. The cinnamon rolls are awesome although they don't have any icing or frosting on them.
The next day we ordered more cinnamon rolls ($2 each), 4 pieces of fried chicken ($8.75), small container of beef barley soup ($6) and small size potato wedges ($4.25) or as they call it, taters!
The fried chicken was one of the best we've ever had. The beef barley soup had plenty of veggies and potato and was delicious. The potato wedge were fried on the spot, they were crisp and well seasoned and the portion was plenty for two people and leftover for later.
Obviously this place is a favorite of locals as we were waiting for our order we saw people come and pick up loaves of bread and packaged of cookies and other baked goods.
Service is friendly and attentive. We'll...
