Revised review I visited Vancouver after moving away for a few months. A friend joined me on my current visit and I really wanted to have her try Trinidadian food. I decided to stop by Baby Dhal since we were in the area, and other Trinidadian restaurants in the GVA require a bit more of a commute. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. The doubles had more chutney this time around, and the thickness of the curry sauce and spice balance was perfect. I was not impressed during my previous visits, but it seems like they've got things right in the kitchen now. Keep up the great work Baby Dhal team!
Old review (2022) I've given Baby Dhal a couple of tries because I reallly wanted to love them. I give them props for preparing their food fresh, having a good selection of local Trinidadian drinks to complement the food and a really good doubles bara. However, the food is not representatitive of what you would get in Trinidad.
I found the curry goat, veggies in the veggie platter and doubles channa to have a surprisingly weak flavour profile. While the buss up shut had a nice browning, it was not silky like what you would get in Trinidad. The doubles are served with pepper sauce and tamarind sauce only, which both lacked depth. Coupled with the under spiced channa left much to be desired. I don't know if the rising cost of food (spices), makes it hard for them to produce the authentic flavours that would transport me back home. But I hope they can do a little bit of homework to...
Read moreDoubles, bhaji, shrimps and aloo curry. @babydhalroti it's the first time, since living in Vancouver, that I've enjoyed food that tastes more like the childhood foods I know and love. Those easy Sundays when we would visit friends on the coast, East or West, and spend a whole carefree day. Simple, beautiful, stress-free.
So many folks think Jamaican food is representative of ALL of the Caribbean...but Baby Dhal is proudly Trini, thank goodness, and damn it's delicious!
The doubles were pillowy soft and stuffed with a fragrant but mild channa curry.
The shrimps curry was so mouthwatering good...it tasted like it was just caught and cooked over the fire side like they do in the countryside.
Oh my gawd...the bhaji was heavenly! Just the way I remember, exactly what a quick fry bhaji should taste like.
No nonsense Caribbean attitude, pristine place, awesome vibes, home cooked food, and generous portions.
I love it! Thanks for being here Baby Dhal! I hope Wendelishh visits you soon, I'll be there for that party!
I hope to see some authentic Guyanese dishes coming to Vancouver soon, like cook up rice, and pepperpot, and so much that is both Caribbean and South American.
Did you know we are considered to be Caribbean and South American? Firmly entrenched in both culture and place, and so proud to be...
Read moreTerrible service today. I ordered ahead of time because i know it always takes about an hour for the food to be prepared (always wondered why it takes so long, but never complained). When I arrived to pick up food, I was told they only accept cash or e-transfer. I got my phone ready to pay and then my phone died. So I waited and waited and waited while the lady was in the back kitchen and finally just pulled the usb cord out of their IPad to charge my phone while waiting for someone to just tell me how much I had to pay. The lady then finally comes out of the kitchen (she looks busy, maybe cooking some food as well?) and she gives me this massive eye roll because I had used their usb to charge my phone SO THAT I COULD PAY THEM. It’s just astonishing to me that after all the inconvenience on my end to be met with such a rude eye roll as if I was inconveniencing her? Anyways, been coming here since they opened and always told friends to go try it, but that’ll be my last visit. Good...
