I'm not normally inspired to leave reviews, but every now and then I'm compelled following an extremely positive (or negative) experience.
My partner and I were looking for a nice restaurant on Commercial Drive, and after browsing a few places we decided to try out Gojo Café based on the 4.7/5 review rating.
The exterior of the building was not very impressive and we were both skeptical as we approached. The restaurant was very hot inside, cooled down only by a single, stationary fan.
Once seated however, we were greeted by the lovely Genet, who was not only our server, but also the chef (and I believe the owner). I was touched by her sincerity and sweetness, and immediately knew she genuinely cared about the customers who found their way into her establishment.
The food as absolutely phenomenal. I couldn't stop commenting on how delicious it was all the way through our meal. The spices were perfectly balanced, the meat was tender and delicious, and it was all made lovingly by hand (even the Ethiopian bread).
If you are looking for a flavorful, authentic Ethiopian experience, I highly recommend checking this place out. It is inexpensive, the service is sincere, and the food is phenomenal.
I'll definitely be going back for more, and am looking forward to sharing this hidden gem with my...
Read moreWhen I was served up a steaming, aromatic lamb dish I was a little surprised to see that no cutlery was present. However the side dish of a spongy bread, accompanied by its sibling sponge soaking up the most serene sauces on the main plate, led me to believe that this culinary experience was traditionally and best enjoyed through the use of my own hands
A most colourful and enriching sweetness of flavour rose up from the plate like smoke off a fresh volcano, and I was so excited to dig in (lamb is a personal favourite as it is, not to mention my excitement at a different nourishment experience than I am used to). I tore off, with gentle vigor, a square of the spongy bread and pinched off a sopping mass of the lamb awaze. Vegetables, sauce, and meat, all squeezed in between the dense walls of the sponge bread, and my oh my! To supplement the richness of life with the unstoppable waves of flavour is a delight that is not well understood in our simple Earth! I was overwhelmed by the combination of tenderness, chewiness, and zest. A distinct passion for food is communicated through what obvious love is artistically delivered in each plate.
The owner, to top it all off, has a generously positive attitude which assures that the restaurant's atmosphere doesn't feel far from home.

Read moreFirst time eating ethiopian, this was my experience:
I enter to this small (and quite pretty) place and confess my ignorance on all things ethiopian. I ask what should I have as a first contact with this cuisine. I am asked if I eat meat (I do) and my choice of meat (beef). The man taking my order points to a single name: tibs. I take it.
I get my tibs, which happens to be a MASSIVE platter of perfectly cooked meat and onions. There is also the faint echo of some pepper, but they are clearly not the star of the show. The meat is dumped from the cooking pan to my plate in front of my eyes. Lots of steam and a delicious aroma: this is clearly made on the spot.
I get 4 rolls of njera bread, which is a kind of slightly sour pancake-bread which serves as a sort of napkin with which to pick up the food from the plate. Lots of fun.
I dont know if this is standard procedure here in Canada, since im from Spain, but i also get a huge jar of water for free. That alone deserves my praise as an european.
The tibs is amazing, very tasty, completely delicious, and the njera makes it a very fun and filling meal.
Barely 20 dollars for some of the tastiest meat I've eaten this whole year
