My husband and I had our Anniversary dinner here on December 28, 2022. I wish we had gone somewhere else. The restaurant shares the space with the Lounge and is VERY noisy. We had reservations for 7:15 and didn't even get a drink until 8PM, 45 minutes is not satisfactory. To say that service was slow is an understatement. I would suggest that staff tell patrons what is NOT available when you hand out the menu. My husband and I both wanted the oysters only to find out that they had none when we ordered them. The reason given for the lack of oysters was that they couldn't be harvested because of the "snow" that we had in Vancouver, what a crock! Other restaurants in Vancouver had no problem obtaining Oysters and in fact we had them the next night at ANOTHER Vancouver restaurant. Back to the drawing board, back to the menu. My husband and I the both ordered the Foie Gras. Our waiter comes back, sorry NO Foie Gras. I guess the snow stopped the harvest of duck liver also. My husband ordered another appy and I settled for the salad as there was nothing else that peeked my interest on the limited menu. The salad was a take on a Caesar salad with mixed greens, anchovies, crispy prosciutto. Well there was NO prosciutto at all. Since we rarely saw our waiter I caught the eye of the manager and waived him over. He said that the prosciutto was the same colour as the radicchio and I might not know that it is there, really??? I think I know the difference between radicchio and crispy prosciutto. Upon reviewing the menu while writing this review I see that the croutons were also missing from the salad. WOW, they can't even get a simple salad right. I spoke with the manager about the absence of his appies. He would give us a free dessert for our problems. I feel the free dessert should have been given since it was our 37th anniversary and the restaurant were well aware of this. There is no ambiance due to the noise, the lack of space between tables and service. Our table was so close to the next that I had to grab our menus when anyone walked by as they were nearly knocked to the ground. There was a VERY loud piano being played in the lounge and my husband had to yell so that I could hear him over the noise. The chairs were VERY uncomfortable, in fact you would need 2 pillows behind you as the chairs are VERY oversized. On the bright side my mushroom rissoto was excellent. I ordered a side (3) scallops which were cooked to perfection. The rissoto is rich but VERY small so if you are a big eater I'd suggest ordering a side. As this was a special occassion I was very disappointed and thought that Bacchus could have stepped up and done better, especially for $385. We went to 5 Sails restaurant on December 29 and all I can say about 5 Sails is they know how to do it right. Not sure why Bacchus gets such high marks. Bacchus also provides the room service for the Wedgwood Hotel and they couldn't get that right either, but that is a story for another review. Do yourselves a favour and eat elsewhere and order UberEats or Skip if you want to eat...
Read moreCame for lunch on a Thursday. We were seated promptly as we had reservations. The lounge wasn't very busy but people kept coming in and out. Service was really good as they were very accommodating to our requests. But it took awhile for them to take our orders which prolonged our lunch.
I had the espresso martini and I didn't really think the coffee was strong enough. I had the foie gras parfait as an appetizer and it was definitely the highlight of the whole meal. My biggest disappointment with this dish is that the slices of toast were too small for the amount of pate provided. I had to take some bread from the bread basket to finish it off and I was already piling it on. The jelly on top helped cut the greasiness of the dish. I didn't really think the canned orange was necessary for the fish.
I had the burger with Cobb salad as my main. The burger was pretty thick and has a lot of onions in it so be warned. The onions and tomatoes were really fresh. The biggest issue I had with this dish was that the patty (very thick) was too dry. It was cooked all the way which I don't mind but it was just dry. The bun was okay but I would have preferred a milk based brioche bun. The Cobb salad was okay. I failed to realize that it was a blue cheese sauce. I personally don't like blue cheese but the blue cheese here wasn't too strong (unless you bite into the pieces of blue cheese). There was also a bit too much sauce for me.
We had three desserts to share - sticky toffee pudding, Japanese chocolate souffle and chocolate banana Dome. All of the dessert were on the sweeter side so be warned. The sticky toffee pudding was really soft and served warm with a vanilla ice cream. I think I tasted bites of dates in there but I could be wrong. The added popcorn have it that crunch and also made it visually appealing. The popcorn tasted a bit stale. Would have liked it if the caramel popcorn was a bit cruncher. The Japanese chocolate souffle wasn't really a chocolate souffle it was more like a chocolate ganache. Very rich and dense. I liked the balance that the sour ice cream gave it. But the yellow sauce on the bottom didn't add anything to the dessert other than a visually component. The banana Dome was the least appealing visually. It was the least sweet of all the desserts. I liked the crunchy praline on the outside. You can taste the chocolate and the banana in this dish. The textures of this dessert was really good and well balanced. Overall, would recommend the parfait along with a drink (maybe a wine) and a salad. They use decent produce and the service is pretty relaxed. Nice place to hangout for the atmosphere...
Read moreMy friend and I visited last week for the special German feature brunch to ring in our 21st birthdays. We tend to go to fine dining establishments quite often, and as someone who works in the service industry, I was extremely disappointed. Not once did our server introduce himself or ask about anything other than a drink order.
I had asked for a mimosa with cranberry juice, however it came with orange juice. Our food came out lukewarm at best after an over 30 minute wait in which at no point in time did our server come to check on us. I had specifically asked for our fruit plate to come out first before the rest of the food so we would have something to munch on as we awaited the rest of the meal. However, it came out along with everything else. My poached egg was overcooked and our server did not check in until almost 10 minutes into our meal. Even then he only came around to ask if we wanted salt and pepper on our nearly half eaten meals. After our meal, we sat at our table with all our empty plates in front of us for over 20 minutes, before our server came and we were able to order our dessert drinks.
When it came time for our bill, my food item was on my friends bill somehow. We did not say anything as it was only a small add on amount which would have taken him longer to fix than amongst ourselves. The most our server talked to us was when we were paying and making a joke about an incorrect tip amount.
We have had extremely better hospitality going to big chain restaurants where we have felt more welcomed and taken care of. The restaurant was not busy and there was enough service staff on to pay a close attention to detail. We conversed more with one of the other servers when he would come around to check on his tables. We visited another restaurant for our birthday a few days later as this was a poor celebration, and the attention to detail there could not have been topped off.
The ambiance was just what we were looking for. However, it was the other guests in the restaurant that made it so serene, not the staff. We were wished a happy birthday by two tables near us, and not once by anyone of the service team, even though our server interrupted us while we were opening our presents. We were looking forward to this meal for a long time, and quite frankly it felt like a waste of money for the cold food and...
