This was my 3rd time choosing Earls.
Really happy with their Customer Service and Top Notch Dinning Experience. I highly recommend this place for an unforgettable time with family and friends.
Our waiter Roman was extremely friendly, he took the time to first introduce himself and explain to us the special menu of the test kitchen. Our friends from Calgary were amazed by his passion and enthusiatic descriptions.
We decided to follow Roman's recommendations and we enjoyed an amazing appetizer, a delicious Lobster and Steak, and a few wonderful exotic drinks. The Coconut Matcha Sour was from another world!
The entire dinning night was memorable, our friends were speechless, and they will definitely remember their holidays in Vancouver as one the best visits of their lives.
I will certainly recommend to my colleagues and friends to bring their family and friends to try Earls Test Kitchen and Bar, it will be an experience that they will never forget.
Not really happy with their service. It was my second time dinning here, because my first time was beyond amazing! We received by total fluke; a Chefs Table Presentation.. it was exactly that, a presentation- our waiter was down on one knee introducing us to the themelves and the experience of the ultimate Test kitchen. It was as If we were being presented and apart of the front stage of circus de Soleil. But yesterday it was really mediocre, and actually very confusingly different to what we had thought was the 'regular' visit at the test kitchen of Earl's.
My best friends were visiting me from Calgary, I explained to them highly about the test kitchen experience, and they were super excited about it. I made our reservation and everything looked good, but as soon as our waitress arrived to our table, the entire dining experience was poor, lack of elegance, enthusiasm or delight in their jobs and really -simple- like any other Vancouver restaurant experience. My wife was appalled, embarrassed and beyond unimpressed with the woman serving our table and visiting ever 5 minutes asking when we were going to order. (In a restaurant that was not busy, desperately looking for tables to be filled- my wife, she was the one that had spoken so highly of this experience: originally from Van and well knowing that this experience would "knock their socks off" of our friends.
The waitress did not know anything about the menu, when we asked her about the test kitchen and best recommendations, she replied "I don't know, I have not tried many plates from the menu", (wow - how come?) She 'invited us' to read the menu, no body took the time to explain us the menu, we were left alone for 15 min. And simply ordered what we may have always ordered from Earl's.
All the 'fancy and elegant' dining experience from our first visit was conpletely disregarded. I felt like I was in a Hamburger-Fast-Food-Restaurant.
The restaurant was at its 50% capacity, almost empty, therefore it was not an excuse for having a poor customer service.
At the end, we ordered regular food- where it was lack luster and my burger barely came hot, the sushi had hard pieces of rice that almost broke one of my teeth and we only ordered one drink just to hope the time here would go by quick.
In other words, really disappointing and sad, because I choose this place based on my 1st memorable experience.
I literally left half of my food, as it was...

Once our server, Laura, came up to us we all got the vibe that she was in a bad mood to begin with... but despite her energy we stayed super polite! Laura ID’d my friends, but I only had my school photo ID and mini–BIRTH CERTIFICATE. She didn’t accept it, so I didn’t get my espresso martini, which is fair. Tbh, I respect her for following the liquor laws so strictly, and I expected it because it’s a major Earls location.
After taking our food and drink orders, a male server comes up to us and says, “Laura’s shift is ending soon so I’m going to be your server,” which was weird because she had already taken our orders and was still getting seated. Anyways, our new male server asked if we wanted to order anything else, and this was definitely a low move on my end, but I took a shot at asking for an Espresso Martini and apologized if my IDs weren’t sufficient (they worked there before). He said no worries at all and rung it in for me!
Laura must’ve picked up on the fact that I had tried a 2nd time and was successful, so she stormed to the male server and ofc said something to him about it. Fiona ended up coming to us and explained that they couldn’t give it to me because of liquor laws etc., I totally get it, but it was worth a shot and kinda funny that the male server said yes to it.
Our food came, and it was great, but not a single person checked in on us that entire night. My friends even wanted more drinks, but our server was never near us (I’m convinced it wasn’t even his section). It was pretty obvious that Laura was purposely not making eye-contact with our table when she walked by, and only checked in on the ones directly beside us… My friends and I just kept laughing at the whole thing, our night wasn’t ruined but it seemed like Lauras was.
It felt like the male server took over our table because Laura just couldn’t handle us even though we didn’t say anything? we genuinely could not figure out for the life of us what we did to upset Laura so bad to the point where her, the male manager, and Fiona refused to check in on us. If it was the Espresso Martini thing, yikes.
It is the absolute worst to deal with mean, nitpicky guests but my friends and were nothing but patient. I do admit it was a low move on my end to ask for that Espresso martini, but I know Laura will survive. It sucks choosing this place out of all of Vancouver, just for us to be purposely neglected the ENTIRE time like the 2 servers and manager had some kind of planned vendetta against us LOL.
Once we settled (and still tipped when we shouldn’t have), I respectfully explained the whole thing to Fiona and apologized if we upset Laura and for the Espresso Martini thing. Fiona was super nice when she sat us, but I could tell she was pissed that I even brought this up. She said “oh, we’re short staff” and “I’m so sorry YOU feel that way,” whilst disregarding pretty much everything I was saying. It felt like talking to a brick wall.
In a city with endless dining options, it’s too bad our experience at Earls Test Kitchen was memorable for all the wrong...
