Pro: Service is definitely faster, and food looks great.
Cons: We tried the Bacon & Cheese and Broccoli Ricotta quiches, and both were a letdown. They were pretty bland, heavy on the cream, and the puff pastry was dry—such a disappointment compared to our last visit. The slices also seemed much smaller this time, and for $12, it is definitely overpriced.
The $6 Chocolate Marbré, while gorgeous and with a nice texture, really lacked in chocolate flavor. ——
First time at Chez Nous with my bf, and here’s our verdict—spoiler: not all dishes made it out alive!
Courgettes/Goat Cheese Quiche Bf 2/5 – found it bland. Me 5/5 – loved it, especially the ever-crispy puff pastry. Did I finally found a real quiche in Vancouver? BOMB. But $12/slice, seriously?! Biggest bummer eve :(
Pain au Chocolat Bf 5/5 - never questions anything with chocolate :) Me 3/5 – looked beautiful, but disappointing. Very chewy, lacked flakiness, especially compared to the crispiness of the quiche & chocolate too sweet. $6. Again, jaw-dropping…
Fruit Tartelette Bf & Me 1/5 – looked great, but 24 hours later, it still sits in the fridge and will probably stay there for a while. It’s not that it’s bad, but it’s very… North American? Really pretty, but 0 refinement in the taste & flavors. It’s thick, heavy, and bland. The cream on top is super heavy, whereas we were expecting the lightness of whipped cream clouds. The crust is extra thick and the very little blackberry (?) filling tasteless. Nothing French about it, and the biggest regret of our order at +-$10, At that price point, we want to love it, not argue over who’ll eat it just so we don’t have to throw it away :(
Other cons: While waiting for our order, we noticed one of the staff members with glasses touching heavily her nose before grabbing food. She then used tongs, but still, it was a bit off-putting. She also gave the worst-looking pain suisse to a customer, while there were still about a dozen perfectly fine ones available. And she knew, because she paused looking at it. Not cool.
Also, there were lots of staff behind the small counter – a bit of chaos for what felt like rather slow service for the number...
Read moreA new hyped up bakery in Yaletown, place was pretty busy when we arrived around 9am during the weekend but we were able to get seating immediately.
Love the interior decoration from the different paintings (available for sale), cute little china and flower pots, and the warm ambiance. Pastries are a bit of hit and miss from my experience, but they have pretty unique options that would make it worthwhile to go back.
We decided to get a few items to share: Pistachio Babka ($7): There’s a nice pistachio spread in the middle but I’d hoped it’s more evenly distributed since the spread inside the swirl was pretty bland. It was okay but I was expecting more since this seems to be one of their signature item versus other bakery. Coconut Au Pain Chocolate ($8): Really nice double baked crunchy texture with generous butter flavour and plenty of chocolate inside. With that said, somehow I could not taste the coconut but almond instead. Makes me wonder how the almond croissant will taste though, it looked really nice on the display. Marble Cake ($6): Texture was pretty moist without being too sweet. I would have preferred stronger chocolate taste and felt like it could do with more butter. Quiche Bacon and Cheese ($10) served with a salad: I am not a quiche person in general so this was so-so for me. It is nice that they have a few savoury options, but the reheat seems to be uneven as the middle part is still room temperature.
I also got Raspberry Matcha Latte ($8.5) since it looked super aesthetic, but I have to say it’s pretty disappointing as somebody who regularly drink ceremonial grade matcha. The drink tasted like it used poor quality powder and even the raspberry felt artificial (was so sweet it felt like they used a commercial jam). Save your money to buy matcha from places like Paragon Tea...
Read moreI came across this newly opened café on Instagram by chance and decided to visit over the weekend. When I arrived, the place was already packed. Through the transparent glass on the left, I could see the staff busily preparing pastries, while the bread displayed at the counter looked fresh and delicious. We ordered a Croque Monsieur ham & cheese with salad, a Pain au lait, and two coffees—one Cortado and one Latte to go. The staff member who took our order then got busy making coffee. While waiting, I took the opportunity to explore the café’s interior. Each corner had a unique setup, creating a charming artistic ambiance. However, when it was finally our turn, the staff forgot to include the Pain au lait. I had to remind her, and only then did she realize the mistake. Later, when we got back to the car and opened our order, we discovered that she had given us the wrong bread. We had no choice but to go back again. The sandwich was decent, though the accompanying salad was just a small portion of fresh greens. The coffee was fine—not exceptional, but acceptable. By the time we returned to correct our order, the café had an even longer line stretching out the door, causing us to waste more time. The same staff member, now overwhelmed, couldn’t even recall the name of the bread we had ordered. Her repeated mistakes made the experience quite frustrating. Overall, if you’re in the city and looking for a place with a beautiful ambiance and fresh pastries , this café is a nice option. However, the pastries and coffee are on the pricier side, and the service could use some...
