First of all I will say that yes, I did come here with a Groupon. However, I will say that if youre going to advertise your business on Groupon, it generally means that you need to expand your client base and that you are looking for more business. A Groupon is not an excuse for "poor service" or "you get what you pay for" in this case.
The food is satisfactory. It's not anything extraordinary, but it isn't bad either. I will say two things, however. Somehow only one of us was served the Usuyaki and the rest of us was left out. I guess that only left us with a 9-course meal instead of the promised ten (Salad, Crab Miso, Lobster tail, 3 Prawns, Half a piece of fish, Steak, Fried Rice, Vegetables, Ice cream). The Groupon CLEARLY lists Six rib-eye usuyaki (a $14.40 value) . Second, the fried rice was bland and lacked flavour. I had to season every bite with the sesame sauce that they had provided.
My Groupon was for 2 people and the bill came out to be around 60$. We agreed that we would tip 15% since both the food and service were alright. Nothing stood out, but nothing was terrible either. 15% ($9) seemed fair. When we received the bill, we were slapped with $11.80 automatic gratuity. An automatic 20%? Sorry but I think youre missing the point of what a TIP is. A tip is earned, and never expected. It is not mandatory. I'm paying for my experience at a restaurant not for my server's. When we (very politely) inquired as to where the extra handwritten balance came from, our server told us that because it's a Groupon, it automatically includes gratuity. I checked Groupon's fine print and it read: "Doesn't cover tax or gratuity. " Do NOT blatantly lie to me and tell me it's Groupon's policy and try to shift the blame to them. Upon seeing this, my mother and I were quite irked seeing as we had just been lied to and decided to still give them a $10 tip. The difference was $1.80. We gave the bill to the server and she had the nerve to run after us and tell us that we did not pay the full amount for the tip. I told her that "a tip is not expected, it is earned." and that we did not feel justified in paying $11.80. I told her that originally we had actually intended on paying 25% tip just to see what she would say. She then had the nerve to tell me that "most customers who know how to tip typically pay us even 30% tip." Excuse me? I then asked her "so are you saying I don't know how to tip?" and it was only then that she had the grace to look somewhat ashamed and talked to her manager who told her to leave it alone. Completely and utterly ridiculous. Upon reading all the reviews on Yelp, Trip Advisor, etc, I see that tipping was one of the many things that other people had an issue with. I also find it interesting that some people were forced to tip 15% and others were slapped with 20%. Where is the consistency here? Do the servers slap on whatever gratuity they want? If this is their idea of increasing their client base and creating a name for themselves, then I would expect them their business to start rolling downhill.
Sorry but I think not paying the difference of #1.80 for what we were not even promised is fair considering the fact that we were missing one course in our meal, and was lied to, is fair. DId I mention that for this course would not have been worth it at ALL if it were not for the 60% off Groupon? For the prices they charge and the amount you actually get on your plate, it is not worth it.
I will ever return to this place, and I will ensure that all my friends, as well as any other fellow reviewers/tourists/Vancouverites will see this...
Read moreI went this place for celebrating my friend's birthday meal. Since I made our reservation, it was something wrong. My friend has salmon allegy then I asked them to substitute something what they had. Cos the course which I bought in Groupon was already included salmon. But the server who picked up my call didn't want to do that. Then I needed to ask the manager if or not they could substitute it. I totally understand when they're busy, they can't handle some special requests then we needed to shift our reservation in early evening. We started our 11 course but the shef served each food too fast and kept pushing us to eat quickly. Even he didn't say anything, but you know those kind of food cooked in front of you are the best timing to eat is when they are just served. If not, the food are getting cold and not good at all after a while. I used to work teppanyaki restaurant located inside a hotel in Japan. I was highly expected I could enjoy similar experience. However it wasn't even close at all. They called Japanese quisine but I beg please don't use our brand if you're far from the original level. And I realized we were missing one dish if they said 11 course. From other reviews, some customers also had same experience. That is something wrong. All ingredients were cooked with soy sauce and butter. It's plenty even we got 3 kind of dipping sauce, they just killed original ingredients' taste. Veggies weren't fresh, the fried rice wasn't good. After cooked beef, they should leave beef flavored oil on the teppan for making fried rice. Since incredibly quick service by the shef, we needed to leave there about 30 minutes that was faster than the customers who were already eating when we arrived. Can you believe you need to finish 11 course within 40 minutes (again, we only got 10 eventually). Finally the check was automatically given 15% tip gratuity. I don't think their service met that level. Can't...
Read moreReserve, reserve, you need to reserve. This is a restaurant where reservations are a must. Remember to reserve because walk-ins are almost impossible. This time, I’ll share my dining experience with an 11-course meal for 2 that I got from Groupon. The appetizer, lobster miso soup, was very flavorful. However, extracting the lobster meat from the soup took a bit of effort. The smoked salmon salad was refreshing and appetizing. The entire lobster that followed was fresh and satisfying. The medium-rare beef tenderloin was perfectly juicy. The salmon steak, shrimp, and scallops were standard, not impressive, but still good. The thinly sliced ribeye usuyaki, accompanied by crispy dried garlic and green onions, is highly recommended. Food-wise, Gyu King does a great job. However, in comparison, the service was less impressive. The time between courses was too short, making the dining experience feel rushed, which I wasn’t pleased with. I understand the need for efficiency, but it did diminish the overall experience. The chef didn’t have many flashy moves and didn’t interact much with us. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but if you’re used to lively teppanyaki restaurants with performances, this might not be your cup of tea. The staff wasn’t very enthusiastic either. A side note, those who buy through Groupon will still need to pay GST...
