Salam Bombay is an elegant dining experience with a really nice, warm, comfy ambience with a pretty nice view down Burrard and Alberni sreets. My wife and I have eaten dinner hear quite a few times over the last few years, and we've had some really good experiences and a few a bit less so. We ate there last night for dinner and 2 weeks prior to that, and I must say we had the two best Indian meals we've ever had there. We've eaten great Indian food all over the world, and know what good Indian food is, and we've eaten at pretty much ALL of Vancouver's top restaurants. I see several people commenting on the high prices and small servings of protein, but I can tell you that what you get there is well worth the price, amd I just don't get those reviews. Remember, you are in Downtown Vancouver where real estate is the highest in Canada, so If Salam Bombay was located on Main st or Surrey or Delta then perhaps you could expect to pay slightly less for your food, but trust me, you won't find this kind of "high end" Indian food experience anywhere in Surrey. Vij's is very good, but its not traditional Indian cuisine, and is more like Indian fusion to our pallets, and talk about small portions and high prices! Our Chicken Tikka Masala (not on the menu so ask for it) was delicious and had lots of big chunks of tender chicken served in a mouth watering curry. The Saag Paneer was also amazing with the spinach pureed and spiced to perfection with no shortage of house made Indian cheese chunks. The Paolo rice and naan bread filled out our meal, and we were stuffed, and I have a pretty big appetite. Ignore the comments from others here and go try it for yourself and you will see the portions, presentation, and food quality is well worth the prices you'll be paying. We will be back again in a couple of weeks for sure. We don't mind at all paying a bit more for this kind of quality and ambience. Even the bathrooms are quite well kept and that tells me that management cares. The staff is so incredibly polite and professional that it makes us want to keep coming back. They have a pretty impressive wine celler too I might add, and you certainly won't see that at other Indian food restaurants. We've eaten at the very popular Tasty Bistro in Yaletown twice, and it wasn't impressive either time so we likely won't return. Highly...
Read more$17.95 for butter chicken, only to find out you get a dog bowl of sauce and that rice/naan is not included (deliberately not mentioned in the menu). Well, I'm already $17.95 deep in sauce so i might as well order rice/naan... $4/$3 extra for a beggar's serving of that as well. At least it should taste good right? No. If you want to eat a microwave meal with nice cutlery served to you by waitors in suits then this is the place for you. There's no way those 5 star reviews are real.
Edit: March 13/17 - This restaurant came up in conversation so I showed my friends my review from months ago, to find that the owner has been discrediting low ratings as a competitor's ploy to steal customers. This has got to be the most childish allegation and response to a review ever. Unimpressed, as I was the night I ate at your, and I use this term loosely, restaurant. If anything, you have fake 5 star reviews.
But hey, at least you have crisp white tablecloths, as mentioned by one of your 5 star reviews. Because that's everything I look for in a restaurant and it really shows he's been there... not. The alternative, that a paid reviewer had nothing better to write about, is an even scarier thought.
P.S. Please provide the name of your "competitor" so I can have some real...
Read moreCockroach surprise!!!! My parents took me here for a nice surprise dinner while the food tasted good, I got a crunch in a bite of curry. It had a weird texture so I spat it out and it was a small cockroach. My father actually didn't believe it until he took a look at his dish and there was a cockroach in it as well. We called the owner/manager over and he said that it must have fallen off us into our food. (As my parents carry around a supply of roaches in their Mercedes for such occasions or I keep them as pets in the Melville.) Then the manager said they had been spraying the office the floor above and it fell in off of the ceiling, but was dead (as if it was ok then). My dad then noticed a live cockroach crawling off the plate of flat bread. At this point I would have been quite satisfied with making the manager eat the rest of his food by force and then walking out without paying a cent. However when I got up to walk to the bathroom to wash out my mouth he actually said "where are you going!" My father not wanting to commit a crime paid for the full price of the meal and we left. When I called the Vancouver health dept. they said that was not even the first call of the week at that Salam Bombay. Moral don't eat here ever unless your...
